It doesn't really matter what team you end up choosing, as neither one has a certain advantage over the other. However, it's always smart to pick the team that owns a gym or two near your home, so you can defend it and earn some PokeCoins.

Whenever you can evolve a Pokemon, always try to do it. Unless, of course, you know you can find it's evolution pretty easy.

Leveling up, on the other hand, should be tried to keep from doing until after evolving your Pokemon into it's final stage. No need to waste their Pokemon Candies on leveling up if you haven't even evolved them yet.

You can gain experience by catching new Pokemon, evolving Pokemon, hatching eggs, and by visiting PokeSpots. All of this experience can help your Trainer Level-Up, which can be seen by viewing your profile in the bottom left corner while playing.

You can't really find a specific Pokemon in Pokemon GO. You can, however, find nearby Pokemon using tge feature in the bottom right corner of your main screen. You can even track one of said Pokemon by clicking on them in your nearby Pokemon list.

Pokemon Candies are used to both level up and evolve your Pokemon. You receive three each for a new given Pokemon you catch.

Combat Points are essentially your Pokemon's Level in Pokemon GO; the higher it is, the stronger your Pokemon is. You can increase this for your Pokemon by leveling them up.
