9.9.09. Harmonix dropped The Beatles: Rock Band, coinciding with the release of The Beatles full Studio Remasters release. The game, containing 45 of the Beatles's hits, was previewed at E3 by both former Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Dhani Harrison, son of Beatles guitarist George Harrison, helped discussion between Harmonix and Apple Corps, which is The Beatle created record label.
The track highway looks neater than the previous Rock Bands. But that's just minor in this section. The Beatles are realistically portrayed in the game. The big thing in the graphics section though, is the dreamscapes. The first couple of sets are played live in arenas that the Beatles played in the the early to mid-sixties. Then, if you know your Beatles, you would know that the Fab Four stopped touring in 1966. So of course, just watching the Liverpool Lads playing in Abbey Road would be all too exciting, so Harmonix made a compromise. Instead of watching a bleak studio, you'll take a journey to a psychedelic dreamscape. Each song from the Sgt. Pepper album to the Abbey Road have their own custom dreamscape background. The tracks form the Let it Be album, are played on the top of the Apple Corps Office, which was the last live appearance made by The Beatles as a group.
All the songs on the game, unlike the Guitar Hero band-specific games, are by The Beatles. While the soundtrack may be short, if you're a fan of The Beatles's music, you'll be pleased. Some of my favorite tracks were not included, such as "Hey Jude", "Let it Be", "Help!", and "A Day in The Life." Fortunately, there will be downloadable content. Another plus, is that all the music used in the game was from the 2009 Remasters.
It's Rock Band. There, I said it. While the menus are different, the core gameplay is the same thing we have been playing for years. A new feature, are the harmonies. By having on Xbox controller hooked to the console, you can connect up to three microphones (excluding the Xbox 360 headset, which can only be used for talking online) to the console. Each microphone will be responsible for singing one part of the song. They're will be a Leader, who will sing the main parts, and one to two singers that will sing the harmonies in the song. There is an achievement checker that is becoming more popular in games. There are two gamemodes, Story and Quickplay. Both can be played over LIVE. Story is similar to the career in the first Rock Band, and Quickplay is nearly identical to that of Rock Band 2. There are two Versus moodes as well, Score Duel and Tug of War. Both being identical to those of the previous Rock Band games.
The main deal is, if you're a Beatles fan, this game can last you quite awhile. If you're not, well then, you'll probably not get too much from it. There are only 45 songs, so you can play them all in around four hours since many of them are around the two-three minute mark. Fortunately, there will be downloadable content. The single "All You Need Is Love" was released on launch. The remainder of the Abbey Road album will be released (or already has, depening on when you read this) on October 20, 2009. The remainder of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band will be released sometime in November, 2009, and the remainder of Rubber Soul will be relased in December, 2009.
Overall, from a Beatles fan, this is a fantastic representation of the impressive musical career of The Beatles, and a fantastic music game. The Dreamscapes add an overwhelming effect to the game. A balanced soundtrack from the Beatles discography. While it probably won't be the Game of The Year, it still is a must for any Beatles or Rock Band fan.
