Introduction

Call of Duty: World at War (also know as COD5 or WAW) is the newest game from the Call of Duty series. This is the second Call of Duty released for the Nintendo DS. Its campaign is related to WWII. As in all Call of Duty games, it is a First Person Shooter (FPS) where you control a soldier fighting for their country. The three Allied countries in this game are America, Great Britain, and Russia. There are quite a few new features from the last Call of Duty. Players can drive tanks, send telegraphs, and disarm land mines, to name a few. This game also features online play: a feature not present in COD4. There are also other side missions in various circumstances. Through all these options, the FPS action never stops.

Graphics

There is not a lot of difference in terms of graphics between COD4 and COD5 for the DS. The soldiers and enemies are still quite pixelated; much more than they should be. Many sceneries look very realistic however. The different areas that you play in look slightly more realistic than in COD4. They are also easier to see. However, with it's mediocre graphics, COD5 earns an 8 out of 10 in graphics.

Sound

In contrast, the sounds of COD5 are very nice. Sound effects like gunfire and explosions are very realistic. You can also sometimes hear battles from afar, helping to immerse the player into a combat reality. Of coure, music is also very key to any game, including Call of Duty. Much of the BGM's are intense and give a feel to the emotions of battle. Because of this and other effects, COD5 earns a 9 out of 10 in sound.

Gameplay

COD5's controls are the same as they were in COD4 for the DS. The stylus controls the crosshairs as well as changes weapons, while the D-Pad (or A,B,X, and Y for left-handed players) controls movement. Therefore, movement as a foot soldier is quite simplistic. There are occasions in the campaign, however, when you are in some sort of vehicle. For example, when you control a tank, the stylus controls aiming the machine gun while D-Pad controls the cannon. Either way, playing the game should not be difficult to anyone, thus, COD 5 receives a 9 out of 10 in gameplay.

Lastability

COD5's campaign is relatively short, but not as short as COD4 was. Playing the game only through single-player does not take long and most people would get bored. However, unlike COD4, COD5 features Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, so you can play online versus other players around the world. Adding an online feature greatly increases a game's lastability and COD5 is no exception. With the addition of online play, this game receives a 9 out of 10 in lastability.

Overall

Call of Duty: World at War is a fun FPS that most gamers should enjoy. Only those who are obsessed with graphics should find any flaws in this game. Online addicts will be especially glad to play this with the fact that online play is now available for the DS version. With all of it's characteristics combined, Call of Duty: World at War is a great game and deserves a score of 9 out of 10 overall.

Final Score: 88%
