The Legend of the Dragoon is a game that was released on the playstation 1. It is a turn based, single player rpg with 4 discs and was released on December 2nd 1999, June 11 2000 in North America, and January 19 2001 in Europe. This game delivers numerous hours of play based on a world that is stricken with chaos. It follows the main protagonist, Dart, and his friends he meets along the way.
The graphics in this game are obviously not top notch. Although when you look back you have to realize that this game is more than 10 years old. Based on this, the graphics arent all too bad. Ranging from decent yet fairly grainy body figures with circular hands. While the gameplay's graphics aren't all high and mighty,it is still reasonable and doesn't take too much away from the overall game. On the other hand the cut-scenes included in this game look fantastic and very detailed.
The music included in the game is pretty catchy and enjoyable. While a few cities use similar songs, there is very many differences. The battle music is very catchy and I find myself with it stuck in my head fairly frequently. The songs change for boss battles and also change inside specific buildings. The extra noises(such as battle sounds, doors opening, etc) are pretty good for the most part. The slahes of swords sound nice overall. Although some of the voice acting gets a bit weird and awkward in cut-scenes, the overall sound presentation isn't too shabby.
The gameplay is one of the 3 ingredients that propel this game to be tied for my favorite game I've ever played. Ever . The typical roaming around the cities is the same in this game as is with most rpgs at this point. But what sets this game apart is it's battle style. The makers of this game took the basic turn based final fantasy battle style and added in great changes such as: dragoons, guarding, and most importantly, additions. Additions are the forms of attacking in this game. Whichever move you choose for each of the 4 characters you have, you can choose which of their additions that you want to use. Higher damage additions require your character to be a higher level to use them. The additions require you to tap X at the correct times in order to complete the move(you can level up each move by completing them a specific number of times). Stronger additions are often tougher to complete. Forcing a bit of hand-eye coordination out of the player, tapping X at the correct times and sometimes quickly. Dragoons, the dragoon is a spirit of a dragon that any human or human-like character can wield. The dragoon spirit when used changes your character into a dragoon which is a more armored and flying unit, overall simply makes your character look tougher. This spirit requires SP to be used. SP is gained by each stroke of an addition. Once you have unlocked your dragoon spirit to be used in battle you can select it and either choose to perform a magic attack or a standard dragoon attack which is often weaker. Magic attacks trigger an animation that depends on what move you selected. Each character has their own unique magics in their dragoons. Once a dragoon is used, depending on it's level, it will use all the SP and will require more to be used again.
While some of the levels are quite trivial at times, and you might just need a walkthrough to save you a few hours of time, the levels and enviornments are overall very fun to play through and keeps me coming back for more and more play throughs. This being said, The Legend of the Dragoon has plenty of replayability, also because you can choose a different set of 4 characters to use on your journey. But you must use Dart, the main character, at all times. Seeing how it is his journey.
This is a simply fantastic game that I can never put down. The characters are so lovable and unique and the plot line is absolutely stunning, ask anyone who has beaten the game. This game is fantastic with it's unique ideas of dragoons as well as additions will always easily be the best rpg in my head. If you've never picked up the game before, i'd recommend finding someone who owns it themselves and play their copy. Buying it yourself is also an option, although it will cost you 30+ you.S. Dollars for a used copy and 50+ you.S. Dollars for a brand new one. Final verdict is, you need to give this game a try.
