Getting ready for The Underworld (Hell)

If you followed our suggestion earlier in building a straight vertical shaft from surface to the deepest level (commonly known in the terraria community as a Hellevator), you would have one of the most tedious things done. If not, you should go make it now while you are on your way there.

Aside from the Hellevator, you should try to obtain items that will help you withstand burning rocks like Meteor ore, Hellstone ore and their respective Hellstone bricks which buildings in this level are made of.

Most notably, an Obsidian Skull which is crafted from 20 Obsidian at the Furnace. The Obsidian Skull grants immunity to fire damage when standing on or beside hot rocks like Meteor and Hellstone.

You can forcefully create Obsidian by letting water and lava meet. One may do this by simply building a few buckets out of Iron/Lead bars. Then take your buckets to a water source and use it on a water tile to "take" it (Note that they will actually take a water tile so if you have a nice pond near your base, taking the water from it will drain it of water).Then, with the bucket filled with water, take it to a place with lava and pour it on the lava.

Another way to do this is if by any chance while making your Hellevator, you come near a water deposit, seal it off with dirt blocks and once the Hellevator is complete, release some of the water and re-seal it once you think you have gotten enough water. At the bottom of the Hellevator, if the water doesn't land on lava, just guide it towards lava.

IMPORTANT! In the Underworld, there is an enemy named "Voodoo Demon" there are instances that the variation of this enemy will be carrying a "Guide Voodoo Doll" under it. DO NOT kill this enemy above lava. Doing so may accidentally summon the Wall of Flesh since summoning it comprises of tossing a Guide Voodoo Doll into the lava, also killing the Guide NPC in the process.
