Gems in temple run 2 are quite controversial, as they allow you to keep playing, even if you hit an obstacle or are caught by your pursuer. You want to look out for the Green Gems - these appear very occasionally on your run, and are really worth going out of your way for - even at the expense of a run, sometimes. Obviously you want to save your Gems for when you have the best run possible on the go and are a long way through the level.
Purchasing Gems:
Many players will want to unlock their Gems using the method above - through general gameplay. However, this is a time-consuming process and there is a quicker way to rack up the shiny stones: simply buy them. This is using real money and directly through the game. It can give you an important influx of Gems if you have used all yours up on a certain run, for example, or are just starting out at temple Run 2. You can see the cost of the various Gem Packs in Temple Run 2, below:
5 Gems - $2.99
50 Gems - $4.99
150 Gems - $9.99
500 Gems - $19.99
