Town Controls
The square button (Menu) is available for characters that have at least LV3 affection towards you. From this option, you can invite them for a walk around town, form a party, give presents, and split up. You can give presents if your affection is at least LV4.
The Hold Hands button is available anytime but will affect the mood of the character you used it one. Even if your affinity towards the character is high enough, she will refuse holding hands with you if her mood is just set to normal. To improve her mood, you have to talk to talk to her to various dating spots around town and talk to her. (More to that in the Affection System)
The Triangle (Open Affection) button is available to anyone whose affection can be increased. In the same screen, you can see the character's traits, stats, and preferred sword skill, etc. For other characters that have low or no affection towards you, their character analysis may be empty. However as you increase their affinity towards you (completing quests and errands for them), their personalities will be developed slowly and more traits will appear, making them even more effective in Combat on par with your unique friends.
Battle Controls
Combat controls is very essential in the game and once you're familiar with the game's controls, you'll be able to fight effectively and manage your party efficiently. First, we'll discuss the Command Palette.
The Command Palette has two sections: the Sword Skills section (assigned to the triangle button) and the Battle Skills section (assigned to the circle button). Each section has four different combinations to trigger a skill. That said, you can only set up to four different sword skills and four battle skills at a time.
Aside from the button mappings above, we'll discuss in detail the two important portions of the battle controls: the Sub Palette and the Main Palette.
The Main Palette opens up a very familiar MMORPG feature where you can freely assign Skills and consumables. Since the game's battle system is very active and will require you to focus on controlling your character, it's better to set consumables and battle skills in this palette since you don't have to pay attention to them all the time. However, if you're able to launch skills comfortably with the palette option is open, then by all means use it since you'll have access to most of your sword skills that way.
The Sub Palette contains the commands you can give to your party. This can be accessed by pressing L1. If you have a shield equipped, you'll also raise your shield at the same time, giving you extra protection when you're issuing commands. The Blue Sub Palette options can be selected by pressing the corresponding Dpad buttons and contains the following commands:
Red Sub Palettes contain the following commands by default and can be triggered by pressing the corresponding button while holding the L1 button:
All commands have cooldowns so make sure to plan ahead and execute your commands efficiently. A missed Switch opportunity for example may also deny your team a good Chain attack opportunity. You have to be careful of enemies as well that can silence you. This will prevent you from issuing orders but you'll still be able to use your sword Skills and battle skills.
You can edit your command palette and sub palettes from the menu. Take note that every weapon has its own palette setting so you'll have to edit them if you're switching weapons.
