Introduction

After months of waiting due to delays, Superman Returns the video game has arrived. There were lots of promises about this game and it looked like it would be a huge Christmas hit and one of the best superhero games made. It is similar to Spiderman 2 in several ways, which is good because Spiderman 2 was brilliant. However it feels like a lot of the things that made Spiderman 2 a great game have been taken away or the game was simply rushed.

Graphics

The graphics are acceptable but they are nothing special. Metropolis is huge and it takes a couple of minutes to fly across the whole city at 800mph. However the fact that it is huge means that the quality of it is not that great. From a distance it looks really good but as you get closer and closer to the city it looks less impressive. Firstly the buildings are quite plain but this does not matter because they are realistic and you don't notice them that much. The people and cars are also nicely done. The main problem is the seperation of the city. Metroplis is divided into lots of different parts. Some of it by water but a lot of it by wasteland. It looks like brown rocks but there is no detail on it at all. This is a huge shame especially when you fly over it. Superman himself though is done very well and looks amazing when you fly around with the cape in the wind. Another problem is that fact that sometimes your head disappears in a wall or object. When you flly into a building you leave a tiny dent and bounce off it which is strange when you are flying at 800mph.

Sound

The sound is very good and helps liven the game up. The sound effects are also well done. When you break the speed barrier when flying it is amazing and great fun. All of the main characters have the voices of the actors from the film which makes it more realistic. When you are fighting enemies the sound also plays an important part in keeping it entertaining.

Gameplay

This is extremely difficult to rate. When you fly around as Superman at the speed of a bullet it is extremely fun. You can dodge between buildings and fly right down to the ground or across the water but not into the water. You can fly miles above the city, until he turns around automatically, and then speed down to help out civilians. You can also run extremely fast. You get to use all of his power as well. Superbreath to blow away enemies, freeze breath to put out fires and kill certain enemies and heat vision to kill most enemies. These are great fun to play around with and you can throw cars around, freeze people throw the daily planet ball and lots of other cool things. However that is it. There is nothing else to do apart from play as bizarro and destroy stuff. There is no where to go and you can't go inside buildings. The controls are simple and you can fly with pretty much one button and the lock on system is very good for air combat. However on the ground superman goes out of focus occasionally and the radar is useless. I never actuallly use it, you just follow the directions on the screen. Superman does not have a health bar but instead the city does. You can use all of his powers the moment you play the game. Sometimes you have to wait a couple of seconds for your powers to charge up again but this is only if you are continually hit. This does not happen that often and it takes about one second to go back to normal. The little missions that you must complete to continue are the same each time. There are about four different types of enemies and you do the same thing over and over again. They are all minions/aliens and the difference is some are strong, some fast etc. These little mission happen every ten seconds or so which makes it really annoying because you have to protect the city. However you can just use the infinite metro health cheat so you can fly around and ignore stuff. Occasionally you get to put out fires but this is very rare. The story line itself has nothing to do with the film. The first mission is when you are kidnapped by some alien on the way home from earth which was definately not in the film. However you fight lots of cool enemies such as Metallo and bizarro.

Lastability

This game, although you do the same thing over and over again, continues to stay fun because you are Superman. You have all of his powers in a huge free roaming city which is great fun. Although there is little to do, flying round at great speeds is a great way to kill some time. There are also different costumes, such as the golden age superman costume to use. There are videos to watch and some small missions to complete such as finding 100 kittens. Seriously.

Overall

This is a great game. If you put Superman in the Spiderman 2 world this game would be amazing. Superman himself is great fun to play as because you have all of his powers and the flying is great fun. The graphics are repetitive gameplay really let the game down. As does the fact that there is nothing to do in the city. Hopefully a new Superman game will be released which will sort out these problems because if it is this game will be fantastic.
