Hello. My name's Joshua and this is my review of Super Mario 64. This game was released in 1996 and it was Miyamoto's very first masterpiece on the Nintendo 64. Many people find this game good, but I do have a nitpick with it. That nitpick is the triple jump. It's hard to preform because the buttons aren't top-notch. But other than that, this game deserves a good reputation.
Okay, Introduction aside, how is the graphics? For a 64 bit game, this has tremendously real graphics. When I look at it, it sometimes reminds me of a field, or a snowy day outside, or even a swimming pool. The only problem I have in the graphics department is the sometimes uncooperative camera. I sometimes find myself pressing the C buttons more than I need to. And that can lead to a sore thumb.
Sound! This is the main reason I kind of like the game. All the tunes are extremely catchy and I constantly find myself bopping my head to some of the tunes. But, while some tunes sound cool, others sound kind of butt-f ugly. The worst tune in the game is probably the one you hear in Tick Tock Clock. Not because it sounds bad, but because that nutty tune keeps coming into other courses such as Rainbow Ride, the princess's secret slide, and that other one with the bonus course you find in the courtyard.
Righty then, the gameplay focuses you on getting power stars and defeating Bowser at the end. If you get all 120, you get game access to Yoshi. Doing that, however, is extremely difficult. Stars are hidden everywhere in the game's 15 courses. Back then, some were even impossible to get without a walkthrough. Such as Blast away the wall in Whomp's Fortress or the one in Hazy Maze Cave that's past the rolling boulders near the door to the next room. If you use wall jumps to reach it though, it's no problem. The Bowser battles are pretty difficult for beginner, novice, and advanced players, but intermediate players will conquer them easily.
Lastability. The lastability of ths game is okay, but the game is way too short, only 15 different levels, plus the occasional bonus level. Intermediate players will beat the game these days in under 2 weeks, but that's only if their going for all 120 power stars for getting game access to Yoshi. If their just doing a game run and not a 100% run, they'll finish the game in a half a week, which to them is probably short...really short. Me? I'm between an advanced and intermediate player, so I'd probably finish the game in about a week.
Overall, this game is truly 3-D, and I love the musical tracks in this game. Gameplay can be a bit hard to control at first, but you'll get used to it. The graphics are truly real-looking, and I'm always reminded of some good time in my life. The gameplay is always very epic, and the lastability isn't that bad, although it could be better. Overall, Mario 64 really succeeded in making itself FEEL like a Mario game, but at the sametime it introduces two new things: The 3-D and the new outlooks of the characters. My name is Joshua, and this was my review of Mario 64 for the N64. I give it a 9/10.
