The main reason I am writing this review is because i'm SICK of Electronic Gaming Monthly's reviews. I am tired of seeing really good games getting bad scores. Star Wars Episode 3 for the DS is a great side-scrolling action game that is one of the best games to come to the DS. For proof that EGM has lost it's edge, notice they say the game has cool lightsaber batttles and nifty flying levels, and then give the game horrible scores. The good stuff is what the game is about, not all the smaller, so called, "major setbacks". Now that the public service anouncement is out of the way, lets continue.
Cartoony may seem a bit weird for a Star Wars game, but if you look at those other Star Wars handheld games with the "3-D" graphics, this game is a blessing. Besides, the cartoon look makes the motions look great. Lightsabers cut through droids as they break into pieces, and the moving objects in the backrounds(speeders, animals, waterfalls, etc.), which are usually hard to decipher what they are, look great! For the 3-D pilot levels, they show off the DS's capabilities very nicely.
All the classic Star Wars sounds are here, and sound terrific! The music from all Star Wars movies, old and new, are here and sound as if they're coming from your TV. All the lighsaber swooshes and clashes, along with gears, flames, and blaster fire are all in this game, along with many I didn't mention, including a couple voice excerpts.
Alot of variety is here. There's the basic saber moves, along with a variety of distinct force powers for both Obi-Wan and Anakin. Obi-Wan has skills along the lines of speed, heal, and mind-trick, that makes you feel like a good-good Jedi, while Anakin makes you feel like a bad-*** with rage, choke, and drain. Each character also has unique lightsaber moves that are either fast or strong styles, depending on your character. The flying levels are kinda uninteresting on single-player, but the multi-player is great, even if you just go up against bots. The only flaws in the gameplay is the fact that the side scrolling parts get a little repetitive, but some of the greatest games do eventually. Halo, Prince of Persia, and Fire Emblem just to name a few.
I'm definetly still finding myself playing this game over and over, even if the game is repetitive it never gets old, especially if you replay on Jedi Master( Hard mode) While Obi-Wan's path is quite easy on hard, Anakin's is a real challenging because of the fact that he can't heal himself like Obi-Wan. Gamers will have fun
( though sometimes get frusturated when they have to do half a level over again. Checkpoints are few in this game) trying to beat Anakins hard mode. I know I am.
The fact that you sometimes have to do half a level over again when you die is frusturating, and the game does get a little repetitive, but those are the only flaws. This is a really fun, well put together game that is one of my favorites on any hand held. Unless you just plain hate Star Wars, buy this.
