Use your Surroundings to Deal Damage
Although you will spend most of your match in the ring contesting grapples, there are ways in which you can use your surroundings to your advantage. Search outside the ring for objects such as chairs which have been conveniently left ringside to use as weapons against your opponent. You can also throw your opponents into the bars to deal damage during steel cage matches by pressing the Run button when you have your opponent in a headlock. It is important to remember not to press a directional button on your controller while attempting this, otherwise an Irish Whip will be performed.
Use Pins Strategically
Although pinning your opponent to the mat will end a wrestling match, you need to pick the time you attempt them strategically. The reason why you should not overuse pins in RetroMania Wrestling is because your opponent will often kick out of the pin and get back to their feet, which results in you handing some momentum back to them. Also try to avoid pinning your opponent in a tag match when they are near their corner as their partner will be nearby on the outside and will quickly come in and try and break up the pinfall. Look to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat when you are close to your corner.
Utilize Reversals
It is essential that you know how to utilize reversals, so you can get your wrestler out of tricky situations. To perform a reversal during a match in RetroMania Wrestling, you need to correctly guess what move your opponent will perform on you. This basically means for example if your opponent has your wrestler in a headlock, and they perform a Weak Move which you guess correctly and press the Weak Move button, you will counter it with a reversal. The key to figuring out what your opponents likely move is going to be is by keeping an eye on their Momentum bar.
How to get the Count-Out Victory
If you are struggling to defeat a wrestler in the ring for whatever reason, you can always attempt the Count-Out victory as a last resort. In order to get a Count-Out victory you must prevent your opponent from getting back into the ring, if your opponent remains outside the ring when the referee reaches a 20-count you will win the match.
Take Advantage of your Tag Team Partner
You will be involved in several tag team matches during RetroMania's Story mode, make sure when these take place you use your tag team partner to your advantage. This means making tags frequently so that you regain health damage, you do not need to worry about missing out on the action when you tag your partner because you will always control the character who is in the ring. Remember also that double team moves can deal a considerable amount of damage to an opponent, so try to perform them whenever possible.
Pay Attention to the Momentum Bar
It is essential that you pay attention to the Momentum bar which can be found directly beneath a wrestlers Health bar at all times as gameplay in RetroMania Wrestling is built around it. The Momentum bar is split into three specific categories and moves can only be performed once a bar for a category is full. When the first bar is full you will be allowed to execute weak grapples, when two bars are full you will be able to attempt medium grapple moves, and finally strong grapple moves when the third bar is full. If you attempt a grapple move before having built up the appropriate momentum you will be hit with a 'Low Momentum' message which will result in an automatic reversal. When the Momentum meter blinks it indicates you can use your special move.
Understand How to Win at Grappling
One of the key mechanics in RetroMania Wrestling is the grappling and understanding the formula of how it works will increase your chances of winning every lock up. When wrestlers lock up they will simultaneously stomp one foot onto the ground, it is very important that you pay attention to this animation as it is not just for aesthetics but also a clue as to when you should initiate a move. Basically, the player who is able to press a move button closest to when their wrestlers' feet touches the ground will win the grapple.
