Full Review for R-Type Final by John Woodman

Introduction

I remember the first R-Type, it was the 1987. It was the time when the only way to play videogames was the arcade, and the fun of the game was the primary objective, because graphic and sound were quite lacking. After all we are talking about machines equipped with chipset slower than an old Amiga 500!
After a long time, finally a new R-Type arrives on high-powered consoles. Its a good or bad thing? Keep reading to know.

Graphics

For the first time R-Type show a 3D graphics. Your vessel, your enemies even the background, everything is 3D! The game is played in the old fashioned 2D way of the R-Type serie, of course.
The enemies are detailed, the background is very pleasing to watch, and the bosses are big and impressive.
You will find of course some spots of slow play, because of the impressive amount of 3D material that the PS2 must move, but it's rare, and not very disturbing, after all.
Nothing less than a true professional work... Experience pays, always.

Sound

Well, there isnt very much to say about the sound. The music is good, well done perfectly composed for the particular level or situation. Sound effects are fine, too. Its a pity you wont hear not a single human or alien word in the entire game.
They surely did a good work, but in these days, players are used to hear more voice in games than in this one, its the only disappointing thing I can say about the whole game.

Gameplay

Controls do well their job, responding in a precise and fast way, you will always be sure of what you will do. The 3D graphic can be a little problem, because sometimes you wont be sure about touching an obstacle or not. Thanks to God R-Type Final programmers decided that touching a non-enemy obstacle wont destroy your ship, but causes only a flow of sparks from your ruined coat!

Lastability

The game is quite hard, even at easier difficult setting, and will provide you a quite challenging experience. Remember also that the games give you the way to acquire new ships, up to 99 different, and sometimes quite bizarre, models, plus two secret vessels. Completing your hangar will require you a long, very long time.
There is also a sort of duel mode using your vessels against the ones controlled by the A.I. This game mode is quite strange, because you cant pilot your ship but only manage your pilot strategies. It can be quite interesting for you, but I didnt found it fun to play, at least for myself.

Overall

This is the best reediting of one of the best arcade classics, literally a milestone of the arcade games. You will have an extremely long time unlocking new ships, new images, secret levels and game finals.
Its a game you will surely play time after time, and after some months you will play it again to unlock another ship or try to beat the score record in your favorite level. Its a game you will never regret to buy, believe me.

Final Score: 86%
