I think I know what you mean.
Go on buy mode and go to the 'Skills' section. As you browse through the items check the left hand description to see what skills it increases (check right at the bottom of the decription) and when you find a mechanical one buy it and after exiting buy mode go try the new object out!

You can earn a mechanical point easily by using the cheat that can be seen in the cheat section here in Super Cheats. Then you can easily earn a mechanical point.
