You don't make a pet, but you may hire cats to cook for you and fight for you, and you can change your pig's costume after you have obtained it in town.
For the pet pig, go out to the village and interact with the pig that's walking around the Peddler Granny. There will be a song. You have to press 'x' at just the right time(when the '!' sign appears) for the pig to get happy. Then the Granny will comment on how the pig likes you and asks for you to take care of it. You can then have it wear costumes.
