Ok first you need to go to Gotz the wood cutter (his house is right behind the poultry farm) and talk to him when he is working. Before you upgrade your house though you need to upgrade your chicken coop first. And you need lumber for Gotz so he can upgrade your house, barn, etc.

Death_Knight answered:

Well bro there are different types of upgrading your house but same builder it is gotz who will upgrade your house just come by to his house on 11pm(Except for sundays because of his break) and he will ask a certain amount of gold and lumbers so he could upgrade your house. Not only he upgrades house but also on your chicken coop, barns etc.. And by the way he is located at the bottom of your barn and there are also lumbers you could cut so you could get more lumbers.the other uses of lumbers also is for fences for your barn and they might broke due to oldness or storms so you must remove them if so by hammering it and replacing new onces hope it helps :D
