You have to go behind the fountain and use herbivicous on some of the plants.
YOu need to go back to the exterior after you have learned a new spell in the Herbology mission..
there you learn the herbivorous charm which opens up the "bulbs" in the pond into big leaves that you can stand on.. that's how you cross the pond to the shield.
