Use the sword and shield formation. Faced against the wicket grunt and press X Sq O to stun it. ( once you get the hand on it. You can predict the stun action before the monster strike you down with both hand crawl.

You cannot stab it when the monster is down on ground. Keeps stunned it and damage it with heavy attack.
