HD Pro Evo arrives on the Xbox 360 arrives, but will it make a bang or more of a subtle crackle? In my opinion, more the latter. The actual football is better than ever, but there are some bad, and in places downright unforgivable elements to the game.
Here we touch on the one area of the game that is poor (by the 360's standards). Konami haven't really used the next gen hardware to it's full potential, so while some High Definition gloss has been added, the new visuals are only barely beyond what could have been accomplished on the PS2 or original Xbox. Player likenesses are, however, in some cases incredible, with only one notable exception, with Wayne Rooney looking even more like a troll than he does in real life (cracking player, mind). God, you can't even review the latest instalment of Pro Evo any more without him making an appearance, can you? Definite room for improvement, Konami.
The quality has been improved somewhat thanks to the 360's Dolby Digital capabilities, but the content is almost exactly the same as Pro Evo 5, although personally I think it has very little effect on your enjoyment of any football game, including this one.
Absolutely spot on. Fans of the series will know there were a few issues last time around. One of the most irritating ones was the whistle happy referees, who seemed to dislike your actually tackling the opposition, be it fairly or unfairly. This has been completely fixed and I haven't seen the referees or linesmen make a wrong call yet (shame their real life counterparts aren't quite so eagle eyed, cough, Graham Poll, cough). The overall speed of the play has been slowed a little, so you can't run through the opposition's defence with alarming ease like last time. Overall the AI has been massively improved, meaning there are 11 intelligent players on your team, not just the one you're controlling. I have seen the keepers make a couple of gaffes, but 99% of the time they are very efficient, coming out to close the angle on onrushing forwards, collecting any loose balls and making the stops you can expect them to make. All in all the gameplay is an extremely realistic and enjoyable experience.
The modes that are actually present are as good as ever, with the innovative Master League taking centre stage as usual, with the more accessible League and Cup modes as back up. Playing your mates on this will never get boring, and I'm sure it will keep you all playing until Pro Evo 7 (which has a lot to do, particularly graphics wise and with the amount of content). This is good old Evo.
A great game which is stopped from being legendary by a slightly rushed amount of content and graphics engine. The Xbox Live mode is functional but, again, nothing that couldn't have been accomplished on a PS2. The lack of licenced teams, stadiums and leagues is as bad as ever, but this game is salvaged by it's fantastic gameplay. When you actually get on the pitch and start playing, it's the revolution we all expected, and is still good old Pro Evo.
