Pokemon Yellow was released near the end of the twentieth century to a captivated audience. After the booming success of the Pokemon Anime, Game Freak saw an opportunity - an opportunity for yet more success. Yellow offered all three Starter Pokemon as opposed to one as it's predecessors had given, and allowed access to many more rarities. Due to this, it was a must-have for anyone who really wanted to catch 'em all.
Just like the rest of Generation I, the graphics have aged surprisingly well - but at the time, the most noticeable thing about Yellow? The colour. Never before had a main line series entry featured full colour, and everyone loved it. The updated sprites stayed true to the anime, Pikachu's face when you interacted with it was incredible, and it was truly the first time the naming theme of Kanto came to light.
Much like the graphics, the music has also aged very well, meanwhile newer entries into the series like HeartGold and SoulSilver have soundtracks that make you want to tear your ears out. It's refreshing to hear the original Pokemon cries (copy pasted as they may be) and the battle theme will fill anyone who loved Pokemon in it's prime with nostalgia.
The gameplay is what you'd expect for a Pokemon game. Get Pokemon, battle, catch more, battle more, to seemingly no end. Of course, as Yellow had a mere 151 Pokemon and only one event legendary, it was much easier to catch everything then than it is now - the controls are just as good as ORAS, battles are quick and satisfiying, but the AI is surprisingly bad. I've found myself able to win a lot of battles purely thanks to the stupid move choices of trainers, and the lack of Running Shoes makes it hard for anyone with little patience to fully enjoy Yellow.
Yellow has a lot of lastability, and much more than any of the later entries into the series. And we owe this to none other than MissingNo. And friends, as most of the fun of Pokemon came from the glitches and how easy to perform they were - a charm that newer games simply lack. Granted, it is worth playing the game normally, but it's still very satisfiying when you perform a complex glitch correctly and encounter just the Level 1 Mew you were promised.
Yellow was flawed, yes, but it was still an amazing member of the Pokemon family, and provided more fun than almost any other core series game can ever hope to. Of course, those newer to the series will have trouble getting into Yellow, and if you're used to just getting a Mega Lucario handed to you mid-story then you should probably avoid Yellow - but if you're willing to adapt to the limited technology of the time, anyone can have a blast with Yellow.
