Strategy Hints and Tips

Latest update by CMBF on Nov 27th 2012

Veteran trainers from the previous games are used to a world in which the process of training your Pokemon often equates to the Gym Battle that you are getting ready to fight, but in this new and updated world of Unova, that appears to no longer hold sway. The game is just as fun, and just as challenging as previous titles, but something subtle has been applied that makes it slightly less ruthless, and slightly more attainable than previous games in the series. Being aware of those alterations to the fabric of this world, and how it effects the average Pokemon trainer can make all the difference in the world to you as you play, so drink in these tips and strategy notes, as they will help you succeed!

(1) Pokemon Capture Strategies -- While the capture rates for certain Legendary Pokemon have remained very very challenging (some might even say heartbreaking) -- the overall capture rates for regular Pokemon, including pretty much all of the Pokemon you will encounter in tall grass, shaking grass, on the water, in water holes, surfing, and etc. have changed significantly.

In fact they have changed to the point where you really do not need to weaken them to capture them -- and trying to weaken them can often cost you the encounter -- so the first tip is DON'T!

When you encounter a wild Pokemon and it does not have the Poke Ball symbol next to its name to indicate that you already possess one of that type, do not bother weakening it, simply just start tossing balls. And if that Pokemon is under Level 40 the balls you should start tossing are the bog-standard regular (cheapest) ones, because they have a very good chance of capture!

(2) Observe the Restrictions on Level Control Seriously -- Even the newest Pokemon trainer will quickly come to understand that until they get their first Gym Badge they want to keep their team around Level 8-9, and after that first badge, they can then safely take their team close to 20 before they start to have control issues, and each of the badges that they obtain after that raise the cap by ten levels.

The best strategy though -- at least for the first five or six badges -- is to make the effort to level your team to 2 levels below your current control limits BEFORE you challenge a new Gym Leader. That way you arrive at the Gym with a team that is noticeably stronger and of higher level than the Pokemon you will face in that Gym. Once you attain the fifth and sixth badges your team will have far surpassed the levels of the Pokemon for the next two Gyms, and are actually at a point where you could make a serious attempt at beating the Elite Four (if you could access it, which you cannot yet do).

From the point you earn your sixth badge onwards if you are following this strategy, every single battle your team fights from that point on is increasing your power and making the process of beating Team Plasma AND the Elite Four and Regional Champion that much easier.

(3) Conserve Elixirs -- In previous games it seems that Elixirs of all types -- special potions that allow you to restore the PP of your team members at will -- were a lot easier to find and collect, but in Black 2 / White 2 this is no longer the case. The Elixir has become a rare commodity in the game, so you are going to want to hold on to every one you obtain for the struggle to beat the Elite Four and the Regional Champion.
