I'm kinda new with the ps3 I just baught it, so I'm guessing I need internet connections to update my ps3? Can someone help me with this?

Yeah you do.
Go to Settings-> Network Settings->Internet Connection Settings.
Press Scan and it should get your settings for you, you just need your networks password.

Yes, you need a internet connection to be able to update or you wont be able to play some PS3 games requiring patches.
