Dead Giant Trees

What do the dead giant trees that are scattered around The Forest of Fallen Giants do? Examining some says 'Alas, nothing happened' and the one by the soldier's rest bonfire simply says 'A giant rests in peace'.

Later in the game you will be able to visit the memories of those deceased giants, one of them holds the key to reaching Vendrick's throne and thus clearing the game.
