01 - About this FAQ [0100]

Valkyrie Profile Silmeria (VP:S) is the sequel to the classic Playstation game
Valkyrie Profile, recently re-released for the PSP as Valkyrie Profile Lenneth.
Like all other tri-Ace RPGs, VP:S has innovative gameplay with several features
that you won't find in any other game, or that work in a very original, often
complex, way. This FAQ is about one of these features: skills.

This FAQ is finished and is only intended for the Japanese version. I'll make
a full FAQ/Walkthrough for the American version, so use that guide if you're
playing in English version.

If you see weird symbols or squares instead of Japanese letters in this FAQ
then your browser doesn't support Japanese characters. Use one that does, or
download the program NJStar Communicator at http://www.njstar.com/ . Just have
the program running while viewing this FAQ and the Japanese characters should
be displayed properly.

02 - Version History [0200]

Final - All CP costs and descriptions added (finally). Rewrote/corrected a
25/07/06 lot of descriptions and fixed the max CP list. This is the final
version, look for my future FAQ/Walkthrough for the American
           version.

    v0.8 - Lots of stuff!
17/07/06 Found out that any character can learn any skill, but some skills
are useless for certain classes. Oops.
List of max CP per level.
Corrected Feint description thanks to warakia. What I used to
consider an OK skill before is one of the best now.
Same for Double Edge! The effect is completely different from what I
           put there first.
Also corrected the katakana for Defense Skill thanks to Sergio
Martins and added many more CP costs.
And last but not least, added a new Section with the location of
           several runes!

v0.7 - FAQ added to Neoseeker and Super Cheats!
05/07/06 Mentioned the Creation Rune, but no ASCII for it yet.
Fixed the combinations for Guard Motion and Scramble Attack.
           Added Scramble Attack's effect.
Added CP cost to some skills and corrected Giant Killer and Scale
           Slasher names thanks to Yuki.
Also explained some skills better and gave my opinion on more of
           them.

v0.6 - Corrected the translation of 3 skills and added names of 4 others,
01/07/06 thanks to Xerain and Kouli! Also fixed the runes for Spirit
           Control, thanks to Yami_Inju.

v0.5 - First version sent to Gamefaqs. Hope it's accepted! Skill list
30/06/06 incomplete for now, with missing CP costs and descriptions for some
           skills. Everything else is done.

===============================================================================
03 - Skill System [0300]

Skills are special effects you can add to characters, ranging from extra damage
against a certain enemy type to the ability to counter attack or dodge spells.
Knowing and using them is very important, as it allows you to overcome the
strongest enemies without the need to spend time fighting weaker foes to level
up. Really, if you know how to use skills you'll never need to level up on
purpose. A good skill is worthy more than 10, 20 levels even.

But learning skills is not always so easy. You need equipment to do it... lots
of different equipment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03.1 - Learning [0301]

You must have noticed that the equipment icons come in four different colors:
gray, red, blue and green. Gray means the item doesn't have a rune and can't be
used to learn skills. The other 3 colors all mean the item has a rune.

Check the Equipment Menu. Whenever you equip one of those colored items, a
symbol shows up on the diagram to the right. This symbol is the equipment's
rune, and when you you equip another item of the *same* color on an adjacent
slot, the two slots will be linked. Equipping another item of the same color on
another adjacent space will include it in the link as well, and so on.

Once you get a certain link of a certain color, you will get a message over the
diagram telling you that you are ready to learn a skill. Different skills
require different combinations and colors.

To check which skills you are currently learning or know the combination for,
press triangle while in the Equip Menu. The skill list will show up, with
partial combinations telling you some of the symbols you need, but not all.
The skill names are in 3 different colors:

Gray means it's a skill you don't know the combination for yet. White means
it's a skill you already know the combination for. In this case you can check
out the whole combination instead of just part of it. Finally if it's in yellow
it means it's a skill you currently have the right combination for equipped,
thus you are learning it.

Notice how on this screen there is a progress bar near the combination. This is
how close you are to learning the skill. This increases by winning battles, so
once you have a combination equipped, go out and fight! The higher the enemy's
average level is according to the average level of your party, the faster you
learn it, but you can still learn it slowly with weak enemies. So you can put
one or two underleveled characters in your party to speed up the process for
everyone.

Keep in mind that, while any character can learn any skill, some skills are
dedicated to mages/fighters and will have no effect on the other class. So, you
can learn and even setup Counter-Attack for mages... but don't expect to ever
be able to use it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03.2 - Skill Types [0302]

The skill effects are really diverse, so much that the game divides them in
five types. You can check those types in the Equip or Skill menus by pressing
left or right on the skill list. The 5 types are:

Status Skills (Xe[^XXL): Change stats automatically or under special
                                  conditions.

Attack Skills (A^bNXL): Adds special properties to your attacks, such
as higher damage or receiving more Heat.

Defense Skills (fBtFXXL): Protection and healing from attacks and
                                     status effects.

Critical Skills (NeBJXL): Added damage against certain enemy types.

Reaction Skills (ANVXL): Manual blocking and Counter Attacking.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03.3 - Equipping [0303]

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as learning the skill and then automatically
having their great effects added to you... you must equip them first. This is
done through the Skills Menu.

Each character has 6 slots, which means they can equip up to 6 skills. Skills
also have a CP cost. The stronger the skill, the higher this cost.

All characters have 4 CP at Level 1 and gain 2 additional points every 10
levels, up to 12 CP at level 40. So:

Levels 01-09: 4 CP
Levels 10-19: 6 CP
Levels 20-29: 8 CP
Levels 30-39: 10 CP
Levels 40-99: 12 CP

Some weapons and accessories give you skill effects temporarily while you have
them equipped. Skills provided directly by equipment DO NOT stack with learned
skills equipped with CP. Having Dragon Slayer equipped and getting a weapon
that gives it to you as well won't raise your damage any further than simply
having one version of the skill. This is very useful, specially in the
beginning with limited CP or runes.

04 - Rune List *INCOMPLETE* [0400]

I'll call runes by their names in the Skill List bellow, but for that to do you
any good, you must know what name represents which symbol. This can be hard,
specially if you don't know Japanese. This section has ASCII drawings of the
runes to make it easier for both you and me. Please forgive the amateurish
drawings, but they are the best I could do.

The names ARE NOT accurate translations, just terms that help identify the
symbols.

05 - Skill List [0500]

Here it is, the main part of the FAQ. Following is a long list of skills
divided in the five types to make it easier to find them. They are displayed
in the same order as in the Skill menu.

Remember to check the previous Section for the Rune list if you have any
trouble figuring out which is which.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05.1 - Status Skills (Xe[^XXL) [0501]

-Iron Fist (ACAtBXg)
Runes: Blue [Body + Fire]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases ATK by 20%.
You can't see the effect in the status screen, but it's active all the
time in battle. Useless to mages.

-Mind Boost (}Cho[Xg)
Runes: Blue [Body + Water]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases MAG by 20%.
You can't see the effect in the status screen, but it's active all the
        time in battle.

-Hard Body (n[h{fB)
Runes: Blue [Body + Earth]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases RDM by 20%.
You can't see the effect in the status screen, but it's active all the
        time in battle.

-Resist Magic (WXg}WbN)
Runes: Blue [Body + Thunder]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases RST by 20%.
You can't see the effect in the status screen, but it's active all the
        time in battle.

-Adversity (Ah@[VeB)
Runes: Red [Body + Fire + Water + Earth + Thunder]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases ATK, MAG, AVD, RDM and RST while there are more enemies than
        allies in battle.
Good, but this doesn't happen often. Save your CP for better stuff that
        is always active.

-Heroism (qCY)
Runes: Red [Body + Fire + Strength]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Increases damage by 20% whenever you kill an enemy.
Not very useful as you can just kill the leader to end the battle
immediately and bosses are usually alone.

-Feint (tFCg)
Runes: Red [Head + Arm + Cross + Water]
CP Cost: 3
Effect: Adds your MAG to your ATK for all physical attacks, including Soul
Crushes. Useless for mages. One of the best skills, and cheap too!

-Toughness (^tlX)
Runes: Green [Body + Leg + Fire]
CP Cost: 5
Effect: Double HP during battle. Probably the most useful skill.

-Training (g[jO)
Runes: Red [Leg + Strength + Weakness]
CP Cost: 3
Effect: Reduces ATK, MAG, HIT, AVD, RDM and RST by 20%, but raises EXP gained
        by 50%.
Bosses give nice EXP, but don't try using this against them or you'll
        get yourself killed easily.

-Observation (IuTxCV)
Runes: Green [Body + Fire + Strength]
CP Cost: 5
Effect: Increases ATK, MAG, HIT, AVD, RDM and RST as times passes in battle.
Really good for bosses since they usually take forever to die.

-Solitary Struggle (\^BXgO)
Runes: Green [Body + Fire + Reverse]
CP Cost: 4
Effect: Increases ATK, MAG, HIT, AVD, RDM and RST when allies are dead. The
more dead allies, the bigger the boost.
Only good if you have a setup to let you kill the enemy in one turn.
        Way too risk otherwise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05.2 - Attack Skills (A^bNXL) [0502]

-Might Blow (}CguE)
Runes: Blue [Sword + Thunder + Strength]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Higher chance of breaking enemy guard and stunning them.

-Break-Up (uCNAbv)
Runes: Blue [Arm + Sword + Cross + Strength]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Higher chance of entering Break Mode when breaking body parts.

-Spirit Control (XsbgRg[)
Runes: Red [Arm + Sword + Thunder]
CP Cost: 3
Effect: Receive more purple stones while attacking downed enemies.
Purple stones restore your AP bar, allowing for more attacks.

-Heat-Up (q[gAbv)
Runes: Red [Body + Sword + Strength]
CP Cost: 4
Effect: Increases Heat gained by attacks by 20%.
Heat is the blue gauge you raise to use Soul Crushes.

-Double Edge (_uGbW)
Runes: Red [Sword + Arrow + Arm + Training]
CP Cost: 5
Effect: Adds a second hit to all your attacks.
If you use a 3-hit attack each attack will hit twice, resulting in 6
hits. These added hits seem to deal 12% damage of the original hit.
Also, they won't give any additional Heat.
Remember that long combos boost your Soul Crush damage.

-Overload (I[o[[h)
Runes: Red [Head + Water + Dark + Cross]
CP Cost: 4
Effect: Increases magic damage by 50% when using attack spells, but they can
        now hurt allies as well.
The mage won't be affected by it's own spell and this applies only to
ATTACK MAGIC. Support spells such as Reduce Guard won't hit your allies
and attack ITEMS will deal the same damage.
Can be used for free healing every turn if you can absorb the spell's
element, but other than that you'll probably just kill yourself.

-Triple Edge (gvGbW)
Runes: Green [Arrow + Water + Training]
CP Cost: 6
Effect: Adds two hits to all your attacks.
Stacks with Double Edge. Really good skill.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05.3 - Defense Skills (fBtFXXL) [0503]

-Guts (Kbc)
Runes: Blue [Body + Healing + Training]
CP Cost: 3
Effect: Chance of staying alive with 1 HP after receiving fatal damage. Can
only be activated while character has more than 10% HP.
Not the gamebreaking skill it was in VP1, but still very useful. Cheap
and easy to learn as well.

-Reflex Movement (tbNX[ug)
Runes: Blue [Body + Leg + Thunder]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Possible to avoid or block attacks even during combo attacks.
        Don't bother.

        an accessory to gain immunity.

-HP Reserve (100) (HPU[u(100))

CP Cost: 3
Effect: First 100 points of damage in battle will not reduce character's HP.

-Guard Motion (K[h[V)
Runes: Red [Arm + Strength + Reverse]
CP Cost: 4
Effect: Reduces damage by 20%, but cannot block or dodge attacks anymore. Also

Use this when the enemy can't deal status and you've got yourself a
        tank.

Runes: Green [Body + Earth + Healing]

Runes: Blue [Body + Healing + Reverse + Creation]
CP Cost: 6
Effect: First 5000 points of damage in battle will not reduce character's HP.
Specially useful in the Seraphic Gate.

-Magic Control (}WbNRg[)
Runes: Red [Body + Head + Water + Cross]
CP Cost: 6
Effect: Halves magic damage. Another important skill.

-Missile Protection (~TCveNV)

Effect: Allows you to block attacks by pressing the character button at the
exact moment the attack hits you. Timing is often difficult to get.

-Scramble Attack (XNuA^bN)
Runes: Red [Head + Leg + Sword + Reverse]
CP Cost: 2
Effect: Allows you to set a fourth attack. If you press a direction while
attacking in battle, the character will use that attack instead of the
        regular one.
You can use this to use the same attack two or three times in a row or
to avoid using a ground attack that won't hit flying enemies, for
        example.
        Has no effect on mages.

attack. Press the character's button when this happens to counter
attack with the fourth attack you've set up.
        Has no effect on mages.

06 - Rune Locations [0600]

This isn't supposed to be a complete list, as that would be way too much work
for me in the Japanese version. The goal here is to have at least one easy
location for each rune.

Also, the Body, Head, Leg and Arm runes come only in their respective armor.
You can buy all of them eventually, so I didn't bother listing their locations
here.

If you consider enemy names and locations spoilers, watch out as this list will
mention both.
