Tekken 5 introduces customization to the world of Tekken. The purpose
of this FAQ is to show some of the different special customizations that
can be created within the game. Listed are customizations that were
created by me, and members of the Tekken Zaibatsu forums and GameFAQs
forums.
Feel free to contribute or suggest corrections that I should make to
the current customizations within this FAQ. You will receive credit for
any contribution or correction/suggestion that I use whenever I create
the next version of this FAQ. Thank you in advance.
This FAQ only covers the customizations that are available in the PS2
Tekken 5 (U.S. Version). These customizations should work in the Arcade
and other PS2 Versions of Tekken 5, but I only tested these on the U.S.
Version.
IMPORTANT: When sending an e-mail, please put something about "Tekken"
or "FAQ" somewhere in the e-mail topic, or the e-mail will be deleted.
Thanks to Kirin, now you can see at a glance how much of your hard
earned 'G' it would take to buy the required items for each of the
customized outfits.

All of the customizations will be written in the format below:

In order to use a customization, you will have to purchase all of
the listed items/colors for each listed part of the body.
The Punch outfit is selected by pressing a punch button (square or triangle).
The Kick outfit is selected by pressing a kick button (X or circle).
Certain items can be gained from a second playthrough of the "Devil Within"
mini-game.
NOTE: k = 1000, so for example, 8k = 8000

Here is a list of the buyable customization items and colors available
within Tekken 5.
An item that is available for a fighter's Punch and Kick costumes only
need to be purchased once, then it will be available to equip for both
costumes.
NOTE: The customization items do not affect the fighter's abilities.

There are different ways to earn money in Tekken 5. This section
explains the amount of money that can be earned in the different
modes.

Story Battle
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The first time (and only the first time) that you beat the "Story Battle"
mode for a fighter, you will earn 100,000G. Do this for all 32 fighters
and you would have earned a total of 3,200,000G. This is the best way
to begin. After you have passed the game with every fighter in "Story
Battle", then go on to "Arcade Battle".

Arcade Battle
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You earn 800G for fighting a fighter of a lower rank than your fighter.
For defeating fighters at your level, you earn 1000G. For defeating
fighters at a higher level, you earn 1000G + 100 X (number of levels
opponent is higher than you). Whenever you fight against a Warlord or
higher, add 1000G to the total earned.
For example: A 9th Kyu defeating a 5th Kyu will earn
1000 + (100 X 4) = 1400G
After passing "Story Battle", you will most likely be spending most of
your time in this mode trying to earn money.
Within "Arcade Battle", you also have a chance to get something known as
"Tekken Roulette". After a win, you might get a chance to multiply your
winnings for that match by 2, 3, 5, or 10. You will know that you're
going to get a roulette if you see a red flashing light above your life
bar. "Tekken Roulette" appears randomly and may appear consecutively.
To help speed up the process, set matches to be only 1 round.

Time Attack
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You earn 25G per win for every match, except against Jinpachi. When
you defeat Jinpachi, you earn 50G. The amount of money earned is
the same as in the Arcade version of Tekken 5. This method is the
worst way to earn money.

Survival Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------
For your first five matches, the amount of money that you earn
increases by 100G for each match.
For example: for 1 win you receive 100G and for 5 wins you receive 500G.
After that, your earnings will only increase by 100G for every 5 wins.
For example: 5-9 wins = 500G, 10-14 wins = 600G.
This method is okay to earn money. On average, you don't earn as much
per match as "Arcade Battle", but you can earn "Survival Mode" records
in the process. So far, the most that I've earned for a match is 1200G,
which is earned after obtaining 40-44 wins.

Tekken: Devil Within
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The first time that you beat "Devil Within", you will earn
1,000,000G to use for customization.
On the second play through, you can find blue orbs to collect that
count as money. You find these after every enemy that you defeat.
Also, you may find some in objects throughout the level that can be
destroyed. However, the money is only added to your total after
completing the level.
If you enjoy replaying "Devil Within", then this is another good
method to earn money. But, keep in mind that you only earn your
money after passing a level, which may take a while.

Selecting Extra Outfits

There are some fighters that have a PS2 exclusive costume that
can be purchased for 500,000G in the Customize mode. Once
purchased, the costume can be selected by pressing the triangle
button. Ling and Asuka have a fourth costume that can be selected
by pressing the circle button. Christie has Eddy Gordo as a palette
swap that can be selected by pressing triangle or circle.
Play as Schoolgirl Ling

Ling has a fifth costume that can be selected by pressing the "R1"
button (or "Start" on the Arcade Machine). It is available from the
start (doesn't need to be purchased).
Play as Panda

Highlight Kuma and then press the X or circle button.

Highlight Mokujin and then press the X or circle button.
Play as Jinpachi Mishima

Jinpachi cannot be unlocked. The only way to play as him is to use a cheat

Gaining Ranks Quickly
---------------------
In order to gain ranks quickly you must fight against opponents that are
near your current rank. After each match in Arcade Mode, you can choose
which ranking to fight against. You should always try to choose a ranking
that is within two rankings higher or lower than you. For example, a 3rd
Dan will want to fight against one of the following:
1st Dan, 2nd Dan, 3rd Dan, 4th Dan, or 5th Dan. If there are no available
fighters within this interval, choose "Exit" and re-renter Arcade Mode.

Fashion Show

In Customize Mode, you can zoom in by pressing "R1" and zoom out by
pressing "L1". Pressing both "R2" and "L2" resets the position of the
fighter back to the default position. Moving the right analog stick
rotates the fighter. And pressing the select button removes all of
the menus so that you can get a better view of your fighter.

Introduction
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may or may not know, Tekken 5 introduces fighter customization
to the Tekken series, which is similar to the feature within Virtua
Fighter 4. In this article, I will discuss the customization feature
of the arcade version of Tekken 5. Hopefully this will clear up any
questions that some people may have about the customization feature,
or how the card system works.

What is the IC Card for?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The IC card allows you to keep track of stats and other info for
only one fighter. These stats include total number of wins and
losses against human opponents, percentage of wins, and money
earned from all matches played (SEE "How to earn money" for more
info). The money earned will be used to purchase items and color
options that will be used to customize your fighter's 1P and 2P
outfits to your liking. An advantage of the IC card is that
whenever you get a new "Time Attack" or "Survival" record with
while using your IC card, the record will automatically be under
your custom name, so you will not have to enter any initials.
However, the IC card can only be used for up to 500 credits.
Each time you play against a human opponent, it counts as one
credit. The entire Arcade mode counts as one credit, but each
continue counts as another credit.

Purchasing an IC Card
-------------------------------------------------------------------
On my second visit to the Tilt arcade, I decided to purchase an IC
data card for the Tekken 5 arcade machine. In the U.S. version of
the Tekken 5 cabinet, the location where you insert your money for
the card is underneath the joystick podium, to the left of the coin
slots. Most places will charge $5 for an IC card. Next to this
location, there is a little slot where the machine will spit out
your data card. You will randomly be given one of five data card
designs (pictures can be found on the Tekkenomics website).

Transferring IC Card Data
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As stated above, after 500 plays, you must transfer the data from
your IC card to a new IC card if you want to keep using that
character and ranking. To transfer the data to a new card, you must
first purchase a new IC card from any Tekken5 Machine that sells them.
An explanation from n8nmonster how the process works is:
"The next time you play, stick both your old card and a new card at
the same time together into the same IC card slot. It'll ask if you
want to transfer your data over. Choose yes, let it transfer, take
both cards out, stick new card back in, and you're good to go."

How to Earn Money
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As I mentioned before, the money that you earn can be used to
customize your fighter. You can win 1000G for winning and 250G
for losing a match against a human opponent. If you defeat an
opponent of a higher ranking, you might be awarded 1100G. If you
play the Arcade mode, you will only earn 25G per win and 50G for a
win against Jinpachi (the final boss). You can use the money earned
from fighting to purchase items to customize your fighter's lower
body, upper body, and head. Another way to earn money is from your
"ghost fighter" (See "Ghost Fighter" for more info).

Ghost Fighter
-------------------------------------------------------------------
When you use an IC data card on a Tekken 5 machine for the first
time, a "ghost" image of your fighter is created. This ghost is
supposed to be a representation of your fighting style. Other
players have the ability to fight against your ghost character in
the Arcade mode. Every time your ghost fighter wins a match, the
money it earned is added to your IC card the next time that you
insert it into the machine.

Customizing Your Fighter
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Every time that you insert your card into the machine, you are given
30 seconds to perform any changes to your fighter. During this time,
you can edit your custom name, purchase items, customize your fighter's
appearance, and view your stats. However, if you play Arcade mode or
against a human opponent, you are not able to remove your card until
you lose. You also cannot perform any customization changes until
you re-insert your card.

Fighter Rankings
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Every so often, you will be given a "promotional chance" match to
improve your fighter's ranking. If and only if you win this match,
your fighter will advance to the next ranking. You will start off
as a "Beginner" and can be given a promotional chance for any match
that you fight, until you reach the "1st Dan" ranking. Then you will
not be given a chance to promote unless you fight against a person who
has a ranking of "1st Dan" or higher on their IC card.
The rankings follow the order:
Beginner
9th Kyu - 1st Kyu
1st Dan - 5th Dan
Shihan
Expert
Master
Virtuoso
Champion
Legend
Sage
Warlord
Conqueror
Deity
Tekken Lord
There is also a chance for a demotion. This may occur if you lose
constantly, after obtaining the 1st Dan or higher rank.

Tekken Roulette

After you reach a certain number of matches played, you will randomly
get an opportunity to try your luck with "Tekken Roulette". This
feature will randomly pick a multiplier (2, 3, 5, or 10) that will be
multiplied by the winnings from the match that you have just completed.
The winner and the loser of the match can both take advantage of this,
if both have an IC card.

so in this section, you can read my response to those questions.

Question 1 - Customize Jinpachi?

Q: "Can you customize Jinpachi Mishima?"
A: Jinpachi can not be customized. The only way to play as him is to use
a cheat device, such as an Action Replay, Gameshark, or Code Breaker.

Question 2 - Customize Mokujin?
----------
Q: "Can you customize Mokujin?"
A: Namco didn't give Mokujin any custom items or colors, so Mokujin
can't be customized.

Question 3 - Customize Eddy?
----------
Q: "Can you customize Eddy Gordo?"
A: Eddy is considered to be an extra costume for Christie, so he cannot
be customized.

Question 4 - Modes using customizations
----------
Q: "Can the customizations be used in every mode?"
A: Player 1 can use the customizations in EVERY mode, but
Player 2 is only able to use them in Versus mode.

Question 5 - Player 2 Customization
----------
Q: "How do I use customizations for Player 2?"
A: In order for both Player 1 and Player 2 to use customizations, they
both must both have their own memory card. It is only possible for
both players to use customizations in "Versus" mode.

Question 6 - Unequipping items
----------
Q: "How can I unequip an item?"
A: When selecting an item in the customization menu, select "UNEQUIP"
to unequip the item from that part of the body. "UNEQUIP" has its
own box like a normal item would have, but the color of its box is
dark blue.
The different box colors are:
Red = item has not yet been purchased
Light Blue = item is currently equipped
Green = item has been purchased, but is not currently equipped
Dark Blue = color of the "UNEQUIP" Box

Question 7 - Items on different memory cards
----------
Q: "For both characters to use the same item for a character, do both
of them need to buy it or do you only need to buy it once?"
A: The data on the two memory cards are separate. This means that
Player 1 can only use the costumes on their memory card, and the same
goes for Player 2. Therefore, both players will have to purchase all
of their own items. A way around this is to copy the Tekken5 data over
to another memory card. This way, both players will have all of the
same items purchased. However, doing this will replace the Tekken5
data on the memory card receiving the copy.

Question 8 - Player 2 Customization

Q: "How does player 2 customize their characters? Do you have to unload
the memory card 1 and load memory card 2?"
A: For Player 2 to customize their characters, you have to load Player 2's
memory card under memory card slot 1. Make sure that you save all the
data for Player 1 before loading Player 2's data.

Question 9 - Customize extra costumes?
----------
Q: "Can you customize the extra costumes, or is it all set?"
A: The extra costumes cannot be customized.

Question 10 - Weapons / Custom items in matches?

Q: "Can you use the customization items in the match? For example,
can Nina use her sword and Lei use his gun?"
A: No, the custom items are just used to change the appearance of
your fighter. They have no affect on gameplay.

Question 11 - Creating more profiles

Q: "How do you create a second player for use in arcade or vs mode?"
A: You are only allowed one profile per memory card.
So, another player would need another memory card.

Question 12 - Selecting extra costumes

Q: "After I buy an extra costume, how do I go about selecting that
outfit for the fighter to wear?"
A: When purchased, the extra costume can be selected by pressing the
triangle button. Ling and Asuka have a fourth costume that can be
selected by pressing the circle button. Christie has Eddy Gordo as
a palette swap that can be selected by pressing triangle or circle.
You cannot customize any of the extra costumes, so they cannot be
chosen in the "Customize Mode".

The main purpose of "Tekkenomics" is to provide you with Tekken FAQs/Guides
and to keep you updated on Tekken news and information.
"Tekkenomics" was originally the name of the website created by me
(Wild Man X), with help from Paulinstein and Drake the Demon, which first
came online on November 6, 2004. However, due to someone engaging in
piracy on our hosting server the website went down in April 2007. With
the release of Tekken 6 approaching for consoles, I decided to bring back
Tekkenomics, but in the form of a blog back in June 2009.
"Tekkenomics" contains various Tekken related material, some of which is
difficult to find on any other Tekken based website. The blog will
contain exclusive articles, original FAQ files, move lists, combos/juggles,
combo videos, in-game matches, Tekken commercials, PC desktop wallpaper,
PSP wallpaper, CG art, fan-based material, and other things.

If you were wondering how we came up with the name "Tekkenomics", back in
my high school days in the year 2000, Paulinstein, me, and some other high
school friends would get together to play Tekken 3 on the PlayStation 1.
At the time, we were also enrolled in Economics. Whenever we would get
together to play, we would say that we were going to study some
"Tekkenomics". So, basically: "Tekken" + "Economics" = "Tekkenomics".
There are a few references on the web to the name "Tekkenomics" that
aren't related to us or our blog. There are some members on the Tekken
Zaibatsu forums that go by the names "Tekkenomics", "Tekkenomics_101",
and "TekkenNomics Jr." that aren't related to us. On Tekken Zaibatsu,
we go by the names "Wild Man X", "Paulinstein", and "Drake the Demon".

I have been a fan of the Tekken series since 2000. A few of my friends
got me into the series with Tekken 3.
My first FAQ was "Hidden Moves" for Tekken 4. Writing this FAQ, I've
learned some new things about Tekken along the way that I probably
wouldn't have learned otherwise. My FAQs are a way for me to share
what I have learned.
Lei Wulong is my main fighter, and has been since Tekken 3. When I bought
Tekken Tag Tournament for the PS2, I decided to learn how to play with all
of the fighters, and this has carried over to Tekken 4, Tekken 5, and
Tekken: Dark Resurrection. So, you can rest assured that I do atleast
know a little bit about what I'm talking about :)
I am currently residing in Southern California (in the United States),
but have not been to any of the arcades in the area in a long time. I
used to play at the University of California, Riverside.
