Currently the only site allowed to host this FAQ/Walkthrough is http://www.gamefaqs.com/ Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction. This 'simulation' game allows you to build a Robot (or buy a pre-built one using in-game credit) and enter it in competitions against other robots for prize money. You use this prize money to build new robots and buy parts, and enter more challenging and rewarding competitions. The competitions range from simple knock-out competitions to weapon specific competitions, where you must have a certain weapon attached to your robot if you are to enter. Aside from the battling, Robot Wars also includes an element of strategy as you need to manage your money and choose efficient robot parts. From the game manual: --------------------------------------------------------------- |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| |---------------------------------------------------------------| | W A R N I N G! | | | | Robot Wars features deadly weaponry and is not for the faint- | | hearted. This screen asks you to select a save file, or create a new one. If there are no save files recorded on your memory card, then you are taken straight to the 'create new user' menu. The default entry is 'DEFAULT' but you can enter anything you please as long as it fits in the on-screen box. Use the directional pad to select a letter, and input it with the X button. To remove a letter, either highlight the backspace icon and press X, or press Square. Once you are satisfied, select 'END' to proceed to the main menu. There is a cheat code you can enter at the create new user screen, so if you want to know what it is and what it does, head over to the Cheats and Codes section of this guide (it's near the bottom). / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0090] GAME BASICS AND ROBOT WARS || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / If you live in Japan or the United States of America, there is a chance you don't know what Robot Wars is. Robot Wars is a successful TV series that was first shown on network television in 1998. It was a 'gameshow' where people built and entered their robots. The robots fought each other and usually the winner was the one left standing. After many rounds (or heats), the winners entered a knockout competition to find a series final. Robots had to follow strict rules such as no projectile weapons like flamethrowers. The only projectile weapon was a flame torch shaped like a gun on the top of Seargent Bash. Seargent Bash was one of the 'House Robots' which sit in the corners of the arena (corner patrol zones or CPZ's) and attack any robots that enter these spaces. All four house robots appear in this game, so you'd better keep out of their way! As for playing the game, when you enter your robot in a competition, you fight a series of bouts against opponents. If, at the end of the round, both robots are still active, the winner is the one that has the least damage, the most style, the best control, and the highest amount of aggression. The arena itself features more than one deadly trap. I've drawn a diagram below with a key for all the places you should watch out for. ------------------------------------------------- | / V V \ | |CPZ/ --- \CPZ| | / | | \ | | / |FG | \ | |/ ------ | | \| | | AF | --- | | | | | | ------ | | | | ------ | | | P | | |\ | | /| | \ ------ / | | \ / | |CPZ\ /CPZ| | \ V V / | ------------------------------------------------- CPZ - Corner Patrol Zone - Where the House Robots wait to cut you (or squish you) to pieces. V - Arena Wall Spike - A wall mounted spike that causes minor damage should you hit it. FG - The Flame Grill - Where fire comes out of the arena floor. Stay off this if you have a flammable robot. AF - The Arena Flipper - Don't stay on this for too long because you will be lauched to the other end of the arena, probably with a lot a damage done to you. P - The Pit - The pit, the hole in the arena floor. If you drive in or are pushed in, it's game over for you and you lose the competition you were playing. / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0003] THE MAIN GAME || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / You can't enter a competition without a robot to fight with (you can use the example one you are given for free if you want but it's armour is made from wood so you can imagine how well it would do in combat. I suggest selling the parts to give you some extra money). So if you've not done so already, head over to the building a robot section of the game then come back. If you've got a winning robot sitting in your hands, it's time to get out there and win yourself some cash! After you select Professional mode from the main menu, you will have to select a studio to battle in. The studios are the following: London, England North Sea New York Germany Sao Paulo Japan Siberia Mount Kilimanjaro After you select your studio, you have to pick a tournement to enter in. Start snall, then work your way up. After each bout, your robot will no doubt have had at least some damage done to it. So the developers implemented a 'Pit' screen where you have twenty minutes to repair parts of your robot. The areas of damage are catagorised and beside these are bars showing how much damage has been caused to this section. If the bar is full then no damage has been caused and you don't have to repair anything. Each section takes an amount of time to repair, so if you have damage that will take longer to heal than the twenty minutes worth you are given, you have to decide which areas are mor important to the next bout. Generally, I fix the chassais first, then the drive, power, weapons, armour, and finally extras. The reason I leave extrras till last is because they don't contribute anything to the robot apart from a tiny amount of weight. Therefore, If I don't have enough time to fix it, it doesn't affect my battling in any way. Once you've finished making your repairs, then press the Square button to proceed with the tournement. Before each and every round, you are shown a screen with who you are facing. Press X to continue, but if you want, you can look at the vital statistics of each robot in the round. For example, you can see that opponent A has a larger pushing power than you, so you need to remember not to try and push it about. Whereas opponent B is less strong than you so you have the advantage over it. ------------------------------------------------- |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| | T H E T O U R N E M E N T S | |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| ------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- Robot Wars Championship ----------------------- Location - London Studio, England Type of Competition - Knockout competition Number of battles you fight in - Five Number of Robots - Twenty four Cost to Enter - 0 credits Prize for winning - 2000 credits Amount you can spend on robot - Unlimited Robot weight - Lightweight to Heavyweight Weaponry - Any weaponry allowed apart from projectile weapons (the torch cutter and the flamethrower) Difficulty - 1/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Flipper, Circular Saw ------- Assualt ------- Location - London Studio, England Type of Competition - Knockout competition Number of battles you fight in - Two Number of Robots - Eighteen Cost to Enter - 0 credits Prize for winning - 1000 credits Amount you can spend on robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Lightweight to Heavyweight Weaponry - Any weaponry allowed apart from projectile weapons (the torch cutter and the flamethrower) Difficulty - 1/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Flipper, Circular Saw, Self Righting Mechanism ------------------ World Championship ------------------ Location - London Studio, England Type of Competition - Knockout competition Number of battles you fight in - Five Number of Robots - Twenty-four Cost to Enter - 250000 credits Prize for winning - 100000 credits Amount you can spend on robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Any weight is allowed Weaponry - Any weaponry allowed apart from projectile weapons (the torch cutter and the flamethrower) Difficulty - 2/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Circular Saw, Self Righting Mechanism ------------------------ Alpha Viking Open Trophy ------------------------ Location - North Sea Type of Competition - Knockout competition Number of battles you fight in - Four Number of Robots - Twelve Cost to Enter - 500 credits Prize for Winning - 3000 credits Amount you can spend on robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Any weight is allowed Weaponry - Any weaponry allowed apart from projectile weapons (the torch cutter and the flamethrower) Difficulty - 1/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Strong flipper, Electric Axe ------------------ North Sea Sabotage ------------------ Location - North Sea Type of Competition - Collateral Damage Number of battles you fight in - Two Number of Robots - Twenty-five Cost to Enter - 500 credits Prize for Winning - 2800 credits Amount you can spend on robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Lightweight to Heavyweight Weaponry - Advanced Difficulty - 3/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Strong flipper, Self Righting Mechanism ---------------- Midnight Madness ---------------- Location - North Sea Type of Competition - Mad Bomber Number of battles you fight in - Two Number of Robots - Twenty-five Cost to Enter - 500 credits Prize for winning - 3000 credits Amount you can spend on Robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Mediumweight to Heavyweight Weaponry - No weapons that cut or move in any way. Basically a computer controlled robot starts out with a bomb attached to it and when that robot hits anyone, the bomb is transfered to them. It is possible to win this without any weapons but it's best to have one or two spikes for safety. ----------------------- Liberty Lightweight Cup ----------------------- Location - New York Type of Competition - Annihilator Number of battles you fight in - Two Number of Robots - Ten Cost to Enter - 2500 credits Prize for winning - 16000 credits Amount you can spend on Robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Only Lightweight robots allowed Weaponry - Advanced weaponry Difficulty - 1.5/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - Some sort of flipper that's strong enough to withstand a thrashing. --------------- Nerves of Steel --------------- Location - New York Type of Competition - Knockout competition Number of battles you fight in - Three Number of Robots - Twenty-four Cost to Enter - 3000 credits Prize for winning - 20000 credits Amount you can spend on Robot - Unlimited Robot Weight - Any weight is allowed Weaponry - Advanced Difficulty - 4.5/5 Best Weapon(s) to have - As the robots always attack you, it's best to have some sort of spiked edge to keep them at bay. All of the other modes are single player except Multiplayer battle, where two players must participate. ------------------------------------------------- |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| | F R E E P L A Y M O D E | |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| ------------------------------------------------- In freeplay mode, you get to set out the rules. First of all, you need to select an arena to fight in. To be able to choose an arena, you must have unlocked it in professional mode first. Because of this, when you start the game only the Robot Wars Studio in London is available to you. Next you have to choose the type of game you want. After you've chosen, decide how many players are going to take part in the bout. Then pick how many computer controlled robots there will be. Finally, you can choose whether you want the house robots in the arena or not. Having them in adds an extra element of strategy to the game, as you have to push opponents into the Corner Patrol Zones. After you've set up the location of your fight and what all the rules are, it's time to decide on the robots you are going to play against. If you are playing against someone else, they get to pick their robot too. The only difference between Freeplay mode and professional mode is that there is no money for winning here. You can play purely for the joy of bashing other robots about the arena. ------------------------------------------------- |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| | M U L T I P L A Y E R M O D E | |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| ------------------------------------------------- The official name for this mode in-game is 'Vengeance Battle' so I'll call it that. This type of play is a one-on-one battle either against another player, or a computer controlled robot. Simply select the option you are going to use, what robot your opponent will be using, and which of your robots you are going to use yourself. The rules are simple, just beat up the opposing robot to win. You don't gain any prize money for winning, as with freeplay mode. ------------------------------------------------- |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| | T R A I N I N G M O D E | |/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /| ------------------------------------------------- In this mode, you can take part in numerous tasks to improve your driving, skill and tactics. -==-== Slalom -==-== In slalom, you are shown a top down view of your robot and all you have to do is guide it through the obstables without hitting them. The trick is to stay on the yellow line and do not leave it. Stop before turning corners and make sure you can travel in a straight line before moving off again. This challenge is more about practise than luck, so if you keep trying, you'll eventually do well. -==-==-==-== Robot Battle -==-==-==-== In this mode of play, you choose which robot you wish to battle, then you have an ordinary round in the London arena. All the rules are the same as a Robot Wars match, so you should know what to do and when to do it. -==-==-==-==-==-== Ultimate Challenge -==-==-==-==-==-== This really is the ultimate challenge. You get to battle one of the big house robots. Each of the house robots have really strong weapons so you should use your smaller and lighter robot to your advantage. Before taking on a house robot, fit your robot with engines and drive motors that will give you extra speed and agility, which your opponent won't have lots of. Once again, I recommend you circle the pit and wait for the house robot to tip off balance and go tumbling to it's doom. / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0005] CONTROLS || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / Diagram of the Dualshock 2 controller: (Thanks to Crazyreyn and Gfk!) _________ ___ L2 | | R2 ________ | | ____ L1 | | | | R1 _=====_ _=====_ / _____ \ / _____ \ .-'_____`-.--------------------------.-'_____`-. / | | `. In tank steering mode, the left analogue controls the left side of the robot, and the right analogue stick controls the right hand side of the robot. Pushing them both forward makes your robot go forward but just pushing the right analogue stick forward makes your robot turn left. The left analogue stick mode is where the left analogue stick does all the moving, and this mode may feel more comfortable if you are used to many driving games. / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0007] MENU CONTROLS || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / Each menu in Robot Wars uses the same control system. Use the directional pad to highlight all selections and press the X button to confirm that. The triangle button is always the back button, and the rest of the buttons don't do anything. Some menus have extra options, like the choose a part menu when you are building your robot. On this menu, if you press the square button while a part is selected it gives you information on that part. If you press it again, that information disappears. / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0008] THE HOUSE ROBOTS || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / Remember how I mentioned earlier of the corner patrol zones? Well within these zones lie the house robots. Big, mean, and with a lot of pushing power, you'll hardly ever win in combat with one. Anyway, I've made a list of the house robots you'll find in the arena, even though on the television series, there are many more. / \ / \ <|#------------------------------------------#|> \| | | | | |/ | Weight | Speed | Height | Length | Width | / \ | | | | | | <|#---------------|--------|-------|--------|--------|-------| \| Sergeant Bash | 120kg | 8mph | 90cm | 140cm | 90cm | |---------------|--------|-------|--------|--------|-------| | Dead Metal | 112kg | 12mph | 70cm | 160cm | 100cm | |---------------|--------|-------|--------|--------|-------| | Matilda | 116kg | 8mph | 66cm | 140cm | 66cm | |---------------|--------|-------|--------|--------|-------| | Shunt | 105kg | 10mph | 70cm | 130cm | 110cm | |---------------|--------|-------|--------|--------|-------| /| Sir Killalot | 280kg | 5mph | 130cm | 120cm | 120cm |\ <|#----------------------------------------------------------#|> \ / \ / V V / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0009] GAME HINTS AND TIPS || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / In this section I'll give some general tips for winning all of your battles. 1. If you are fighting more than one robot, a good strategy to use is not to get too involved. Stand back and let the two or more robots beat each other up without your help. This way, you won't have to repair any damage done to you after each round. 2. Don't over-arm yourself. If you cover your robot in too much weaponry and if it all breaks, then you will be spending most of your pit time fixing it, without having time to fix any more of your robot. 3. Push other robots into the corner patrol zones. The house robots will take care of them for you. This saves you a lot of bother. 4. Circle the pit. If you are confident enough in your driving skills, circle the pit as close as possible to the edge. Other robots will hopefully charge at you and miss, falling to their doom. This is a dangerous strategy to use, because it can backfire, losing you the bout yourself. / \ / \ |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| || [0010] CHEATS AND CODES || |#--------------------------------------------------------------#| \ / \ / These Cheats can also be found at: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/code/563059.html ----------------- Unlock Everything ----------------- Go to the create new user screen and enter 'JPEARCE'.
