INTRODUCTION ******************************************************************************* 'Pacific Warriors 2: Dogfight' is an action game in which you become a pilot for the Americans or the Japanese during World War II. As a pilot, you take part in various missions against the enemy. This game is actually quite fun to play and has a level of challenge, but it's definately not impossible to beat. To complete the game 100% you'll need to play both of the campaigns and it doesn't really matter which one you do first. When I first saw this game on GameFAQs, I was surprised that there were no reviews, cheats, or walkthroughs for it, and I decided to go ahead and fill in that empty gap. Remember, if you need extra help, feel free to email me (my email address can be found in the Conclusion of this FAQ). So... with all that out of the way, I'll begin. ******************************************************************************* 3. WALKTHROUGH ******************************************************************************* -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- a. American Campaign -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -------- Training -------- This is the first mission in the American campaign and it serves the sole purpose of letting you get used to the fiddly control system. First of all, you have to select which plane to use on this mission. The game recommends the bomber so take that. Once you take off, fly around a bit and try speeding up and slowing down. Your first briefing message will appear at the top of the screen, so fly over to the yellow marker on your radar and it will turn into little red dots. Red dots are enemies, and in this case, tents. Your task is to destroy the tents. If you want you can fly over them and drop bombs on them but it won't be very efficient. A better idea would be to aim at one, and hold down R1 to fire your machineguns. Once the red marker on it disappears, it means the tent is destroyed. Do the same thing for all the other tents and then you will get a new briefing message. Your commander wants you to sink a training ship just off shore, so head over to the marker, select your torpedoes and drop one before going over the top of it. Circle round and fire another. The ship will then sink and you will be told to fly back to base (the green marker on your radar). Once you get there, you are told that the second world war has begun and that a Japanese fighter has been spotted in the area. Approach the runway at the slowest possible speed and fly through the rings to land. Switch your plane to the fighter and take off again. The Japanese fighter will appear as a red dot on your radar to fly towards it. When you've got the plane in sight, slow down and overshoot it. Circle round and attack it form behind. If you use your machineguns it'll come down quite quickly, but you can use your rockets if you really want to. After you destroy the plane, your score and time will be displayed on the screen and you will be given the option to proceed to the mission debriefing (basically, this just means 'finish the level'. ------------------- Bombers Approaching ------------------- Choose the fighter and take off. You have to protect the town of Manila from any Japanese attacks. Fly towards the town (the yellow marker on your radar) and circle the town. Don't fly into the barrage balloons as they will take a lot of your armour away. You will see two fighter approaching so take them out in the same you you destroyed the fighter in the last mission. My advice is that you attack the one that's furthest behind first, as this way, you won't get shot at from behind. Soon after, three more planes will approach. Attack these as well, and remember to not let any of them get near the village. Once these are destroyed, the Japanese will attack once more, but this time from a different direction. For this reason it's not a good idea to stray too far from Manila. Once this lot are down, the mission ends. ------------- Enemy At Home ------------- After you take off from the aircraft carrier, you have to locate and destroy an enemy destroyer. Fly to the yellow marker and then fly west. The green marker of your aircraft carrier will be at four o'clock on the radar screen. Slow down and arm your torpedoes (If you chose the fighter, go back and change it). when you're near the destroyer, fire one torpedo into the middle of it. It should sink, and if it doesn't then circle round and fire another. ------------------- Unexpected Visitors ------------------- In this mission, you have to protect the aircraft carrier from being sunk by Japanes bombers. Circle the ship until aircraft appear on the radar. As you approach them, you'll see that there are two of them. They shouldn't be that hard to take out as attacking one won't make the other attack you back. After they've been taken care of, three more bombers will try and attack the aircraft from the other direction, so speed back to them and destroy them. The Japanese will attack once more except this time they will use four bombers and have a fighter escort them and distract you. Ignore the fighter and take out the bombers first. Only then should you turn your attention to the fighter. Compared to the easy bombers, this dogfight will prove more challenging. The fighter will travel the same speed as you and will circle round you and attack from behind. Just keep throwing it off and use your machineguns when you get the chance. Eventually, it will explode and the mission will end. ----------------------- Withdrawal with Dignity ----------------------- After you take off, you are given your mission objective. You have to sink three Japanese cargo ships. There is a cruiser also, but you don't need to bother with that (you can if you want to). Destroy two of them with your torpedoes and tackle the last one with bombs. To be effective with bombs, fly along the same path as the ship to get the maximum possible target. If you run out of torpedoes and bombs, fly back to your carrier and land. When you take off again, your weapons will be restored. If you want to, you can destroy all the AA guns dotted around the bay for extra points. Fly straight at them and just use your machineguns, as they are more efficient than bombs. Anyway, once the three cargo ships are destroyed, the mission ends. ----------------- The Warm Greeting ----------------- In this mission, you and two other fighters have to intercept and destroy five Japanese bombers that are going to destroy the allied radar masts. Fly towards the bombers and destroy as many as possible before your wingmates get there. As there are three of you, it should be quite easy and the only thing you've got to watch out for is that while your concentration may be on some of the bombers, the others might sneak away and continue on their mission. ------------------- Lurking in the Dark ------------------- You are given no option when it comes to picking a plane and you are automatically given a bomber. As you can see it's dark and your visability is limited. There are three groups of enemy battleships near the island, but their locations are not known. It is your task to locate these ships (but not to destroy them). Head out to the sea and make sure the island is just within your visability range. Circle the island until you find the first group. Drop down and fly near them. Now continue to circle the island until you find the others. The mission ends when your HQ recieves the message of the ship's location, which takes about twenty seconds after the third group of ships has been sighted. ------------- Countermining ------------- Select the fighter and take off. You have to protect a bomber from harm as it carries out it's mission. Fly towards it and you will see an enemy aircraft approaching. Destroy it. You will now see writing at the bottom left of the screen that tells you how many enemy tanks are left alive. The bomber will destroy them one by one but it will do it slowly. Fire rockets at the three enemy landing craft until more planes approach. Take them out and return to attacking the landing craft. After they sink, take on the two battleships. As you don't have any torpedoes or bombs this time, destroying the ships will be a lot harder but if you persist and attack with lots of force they will go down. Just keep destroying any aircraft that come into view until the bomber completes it's mission. Use what few rockets you have left to help the bomber with the tanks. If you run out, just pelt them with your machineguns. ---------- Barge Hunt ---------- In this mission, you have to tackle it all, aircraft, ships, and barges. First of all, fly towards the enemy. You've got to destroy everything, so it doesn't matter which order you do it in. My advice is that you tackle the planes first, because if you leave them till later on, they will cause you a lot of hassle. There are two of them, and after they are gone, head towards the cruiser and bombard it with rockets. You need to hit it at least ten times on each side before it sinks, so do that. Now the game tells you it would be a good idea to go back to the aircraft carrier and change you're plane to a bomber, but personally I wouldn't do that. It's much easier to take care of the barges with your rockets, provided that you have any left. Now a fleet of American bombers will arrive to your aid. Simply take them all out (which shouldn't be much of a problem, with all the extra help you get), and the mission will end. ---------- Relocation ---------- The Japanese are expected to invade the American airbase, so it's time to relocate all the aircraft to a new airfield. It's your job to protect all the bombers, which are easy targets for Japanese fighters. Fly towars the bombers and begin to circle them. You have to prevent any aircraft from getting near them, so destroy all of the enemy aircraft as quickly as possible. If you have to leave the bombers in order to chase an aircraft, try not to leave them for too long on their own. With the sky clear of enemies, the bombers can start the relocation. Follow the bombers as they fly and make sure no more than three of them are shot down. Throughout the mission, waves of Japanese fighters will attack, so be ready for them. Once the bombers reach the new airbase (the yellow marker), they are safe and the mission is over. ------- No Way! ------- In this mission, some Japanese cargo ships are approaching the town of Manila. A group of American bombers have been dispatched with the task of destroying these before they reach the town. It's your job to protect the bombers against Japanese aircraft, and if the bombers are shot down, to destroy the ships yourself. Unless you are very unlucky, that won't be the case. Fly to the bombers and immediately destroy the lone Japanese fighter. Now the bombers will be intercepted be five fighters, and the bombers will start to fall. Take care of the fighters as fast as possible (they won't attack you, just the bombers) and then use your rockets to help the bombers sink all six cargo vessels. If you want to can destroy the AA guns, but it's not something you need to do. ------------- Gate Crashing ------------- Before I give you the walkthrough for this mission, I'm going to tell you that the game recommends the bomber as the plane you should fly, but I don't agree. The fighter is faster and has got rockets which should prove more handy for what you will be attacking, so take it instead of the bomber. The Japanese have captured all of the American fuel reserves. You have to destroy them so the Japanese cannot make use of them. First of all, you have to destroy about six tanks of it on the ground. They are quite easy to destroy and you don't need to use anything more than your machineguns. Watch out for return fire though. If you want, you can destroy the AA guns. After they are destroyed, you are told that some trucks have already left the area with some of the fuel on board, so you have to hunt them down as well. You'll find them just over the hill, so go there and you will find them. If you just barrage them with machinegun fire it will only take you a minute or two to wreck them all. ------------- Secret Escape ------------- You have to protect a cruiser until it's escort arrives, which should take around five minutes. This mission is really very simple. If you see Japanese aircraft on the radar, just go and blow them up. Just make sure that you never stray too far from the ship you are trying to protect. when the timer on the screen reached zero, the escort arrives and the mission ends. -------- Surprise -------- You have to locate the Japanese fleet but your radar only shows the location of one single aircraft. Don't get too close to it and fly quite low down. The plane is a scout and it will not attack you. Just follow it. Eventually, more planes will appear so destroy them. The plane you were following will now be further away so catch up with it and don't let it out of your sight. Once you do catch up with it, follow it for another twenty seconds and you will find the Japanese fleet sitting before you, all fifteen ships! ------------------- Red Sun over Midway ------------------- For some reason you are stuck in charge of eight fighters and you can't let more than half (four) of them get shot down by Japanese aircraft attacks. Just circle them until you see enemy aircraft on the radar. Speed towards them and use the good strategy of attacking them from behind. After they are taken care of, catch up with your fighters again. Now you must stop the Japanese bombers from destroying the airfield, so pick one and follow it, bombarding it with your machineguns. The Japanese planes will actually use a little strategy in this mission, so don't expect them to give up that easily. After a couple more waves of bombers, the attacks will subside and the mission will end. --------------- Mutual Visitors --------------- For this mission, you and group of bombers must sink all of the Japanese aircraft carriers, but there is one problem: the Japanese want to do the same thing to the American carriers. You have to destroy all of the carriers before the Japanese do. When you meet the Japanese bombers in the middle of the ocean, try and take out at least one of them so the Japanese will have less chance of winning. Once you reach the Japanese fleet, switch your secondary weapon to the torpedoes and start your attack. When firing your torpedoes, remember to aim for the middle of the ship, because if you do, then you will sink the ship in one go. ------------------- Rattling the Losers ------------------- There are seven Japanese warships around the area and you have to locate and sink at least three of them. From where you start out, head north-east to find the first one. Now head south and you'll find another. For the last one you need to sink, head to the west an south a little. There are others, but they are further away. ------ Breach ------ You have got to destroy some heavy-duty guns so your fellow bombers can conduct a raid on the town of Guam. As you fly towards the island, the yellow marker will change into red ones. This is quite a tough mission and your armour will deplete very quickly. If you have to, go back to the aircraft carrier and restore your armour and weapons. My favourite strategy is to slow down and fire my machineguns at one of them, then overshoot the rest and come round for another attack, this time at a different gun. The golden rule is: TRY, try, and try again until you destroy them all. I can't help you further. ----------- Arrangement ----------- I'd recommend taking the fighter instead of the bomber as it will help you. In this mission, you must destroy the Japanese airbase. Take care of the fighters first, as taking them out will improve your chances of success. After they've all been destroyed, blow up each one of the barrage balloons. These will get in the way of the bombers if you leave them up. After everything but the runway has been destroyed, return to the aircraft carrier and switch your fighter for a bomber. Return to the airbase and drop lots of bombs all over it until the game says it's been damaged so far it can't be used. Mission complete! ------------------ MacArthur's Return ------------------ In this mission, you have to protect eight landing craft against attacks from enemy fighters. If more than five landing craft are sunk, you lose. You will get a briefing message saying that planes are approaching, so fly towards the red dots on your radar. Get behind the fighters and take them down quickly. If you can take them out before they reach the landing craft, your job becomes a whole lot easier. After this wave of fighters is disposed of, the Japanese will attack again, but this time they will attack with many more aircraft, so watch out. My advice now is to round to the side of them and take them out from the side. This way you don't get attacked by more fighters from behind. Once three waves of fighters have been destroyed, the mission ends. --------------------- Kamikase Approaching! --------------------- Take off from the aircraft carrier and start circling it. You have to protect it against suicide bombers who wil fly their planes straight into the ship's hull. This means it's even more important to take the plane out quickly. Get behind the first plane (stay quite close to it) and blast it out of the sky. Two more suicidal aircraft will attack so take them out to finish the mission. Note: The carrier can withstand one hit so you can afford to let one plane hit it. ---------------- Opening the Door ---------------- Here, you've got to destroy all seven of the heavy duty guns that guard the island. The game recommends the bomber, but take the fighter. The ability to use rockets will prove very useful in this mission. The first and easiest gun is on the left side of the island. Blow that up then head back (towards the carrier) and destroy the three guns that are standing in a row. Head along the north side of the island and destroy all the heavy duty guns here. Finally, round on the west of the island is the last gun, so destroy that. If you want to end the mission here, you can, but it's good pratcise to destroy all the AA guns as well. The AA guns take the form of small guns surrounded by a semi-circle of sandbags and they are easily taken out with a short burst of fire from your machineguns. -------------------- Fortresses in Action -------------------- In this mission, toy have to protect six B17 Fortresses against enemy ariel attacks and you cannot let more than two fortresses get shot down. First off, to your left there will be a huge number of enemy fighters. Use the usual strategy and take most of them out from behind. If any survive till they reach the fortresses, chase them around, and just make sure you don't fire at planes on your side of the battle. After you fend off three waves of Japanese fighters the mission will end. ------------- The Last Dive ------------- The first thing you'll notice is that the four submarines you have to destroy are sitting in a straight line along the harbour. There are two methods you can use to destroy them: 1. First of all, use your torpedoes to destroy all of the battleships in the harbour, then position yourelf parallel to the submarines. Fly slowly over the top of all of them and drop bombs on them. Rinse and repeat till they've all been sunk. 2. Ignore the battleships and head slowly towards one of the submarines. Aim and fire a torpedo at the centre of it. Circle back around to the same position and fire a torpedo at the middle of the second submarine. Repeat this strategy for the last two submarines. ---- Slit ---- Here we are, the final mission on the American campaign. A large group of Japanese fighters are trying to escape from the airbase the Americans are taking over. You must stop them from getting away (in other words, blow them to pieces). So, this is probably the largest number of aircraft you've ever fought against at once, and it really is a difficult mission, so I'll give you some hints and general bits of information that'll help you defeat the planes. 1. When you start out, try and stay out of the middle of the group of planes and only attack the ones that are by themselves. 2. Eventually, all the other planes will begin to fight back, so you should let them overshoot you and attack them from behind. 3. If you see machinegun fire coming from right behind you, speed up and take evasive action. Fly as far away as possible, and only then turn round and start to fight again. 4. Attack clusters of planes and you're more likely to hit something, and remember not to attack anything that's flying at you. 5. After the number of Japanese planes is reduced to three or four, you can afford to relax and pick them off one by one. After all of them are destroyed, you've now officially completed half of 'Pacific Warriors 2: Dogfight'. Well done! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- b. Japanese Campaign -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -------- Training -------- Select the bomber and head over to the yellow waypoint marked on your radar. Once you get there, you'll be told that there are barrels on the hills for you to blow up. This can be a little tricky, so don't lose enthusiasm. My strategy is to fly up as high as you can then turn around and shower the barrels with machine gun fire. After they've all been destroyed, you are given the task of destroying a battleship and two smaller landing craft. Head over to the red markers on your radar and the ships will come into view. Take out the larger battleship with a torpedo or two, then hit the two small vessels with your machine guns until they sink. This takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Luckily, you don't have t fly all the way back to the airbase to complete the mission. After the final boat has sunk, the level ends. -------- Surprise -------- First off, fly over to the yellow waypoint, the willage of Manilla. Destroy the enemy tents just beyond the village (think back to the American campaign training mission) then head towards the marker at the American airbase. Here you have to destroy five planes that are on the ground. Fly the length of the runway, dropping bombs as fast as possible. If there are any planes left, circle round and fly past again. After all of the planes are destroyed, you have to return to the aircraft carrier. Unless your armour is extremely low, you can gain some more points by destroying the guns at the airbase and in the village. Once you've finished, head back to the green marker on your radar to complete the mission. ------------ Hawaii Recom ------------ Go to the waypoint and then point your plane slightly north of east. Speed up and fly in a straight line. After a couple of minutes, the two American aircraft carriers will appear in front of you. Don't attack them and fly between them slowly. Try to avoid being hit and head round to a new waypoint that appears on your radar. Now you must destroy a plane that has taken off nearby. Circle the area and wait for it to appear. You've had plenty of practise gunning down planes by now, so you should make easy work of it. After the plane hits the ground, the level ends. --------------- Lagoon on Fire! --------------- The rest of this section will be added in the next guide update. ******************************************************************************* 5. PLANE UPGRADES ******************************************************************************* After you complete each mission, you will be given a number of points to spend on upgrading parts for your fighter and your bomber. ------------------- All Planes Upgrades ------------------- Machinegunes - This should be the first thing you upgrade as it is vital to missions later on. Piston Modification - This increases your top speed but compared to other upgradable parts, I'd rank this one pretty low. Flaps Hydrolics - This increases the handling on your plane and lowers your mininum speed, both of which are important when it comes to making precision moves and attacks. Thin Fuselage Plates - THE most important upgrade. This boosts your armour and if you don't upgrade it, you'll be sitting ducks later on in the game. ---------------- Fighter Upgrades ---------------- Rockets - These are important too. Try and get these upgraded as quickly as possible. --------------- Bomber Upgrades --------------- Bombs - I didn't use the bombs much when playing so I left this until last, but if you use bombs more oftern, this is a must. Torpedoes - There is no better way than to destroy a ship at sea than with a well placed torpedo. Upgrade these as soon as possible. Remember that you only have limited amounts of money to spend on parts to choose carefully which ones you think would help you. Whichever ones you choose can make all the difference when in the cockpit. ******************************************************************************* 6. Review ******************************************************************************* One of the most gruesome battles in World War Two was the battle for the pacific ocean. The Americans and the Japanese fought at sea, and in the air. Pacific Warriors 2: Dogfight allows you to become an aircraft pilot and help your allies take control of the pacific. You can choose between flying for the USA, or for Japan. In each campaign, you must complete missions, which range from simple dogfights in the air, to a controlled bombing of the enemy's airbase runway. Due to the varied nature of the missions, the game never really gets boring, although, with only two planes per side, the flying does become a little tedious. Playing in short bursts solves the problem, so it's not that a big deal. The game's environments are beautifully detailed, that's a real pleasure to just fly around and enjoy the scenery. One of my favourite features is how flying towards the sun fills your vision with bright light and you can't really see where you're going. In my opinion, this adds to the sense of realism, although there should be an option to turn the brightness of the sun down, as sometimes it hurts your eyes. It gets incredibly annoying if you're tailing another aeroplane and you can't see where you're going. Should you crash though, you are allowed to restart the level with no penalty, and as you realise as you progress through the game, the level of difficulty is so low that it wouldn't matter that much if you had to start the game again every time you failed an objective. Another thing that contributes tot he game's easiness is that you can land your plane at any time and replenish your weapons and armour. There are only one or two missions where this is not possible, and these missions have no need for weapons and armour replenishing, as they are just reconnaissance missions, where you fly around searching for something. Seeing as the radar points out everything of interest to you, it's extremely simple, even when it's dark time and you can only see a little distance away. After getting used to the mainly shoulder button control system, Pacific Warriors 2: Dogfight reveals itself to be a rather accurate simulation of the pacific battle between the Japanese and the US. It incorporates all of the aspects of war, from bombings, to protecting convoys, to searching for enemy warships. With two campaigns, and twenty-five missions in each, the game turns out to be of decent length, spoiled only by the lack of planes to choose from. ******************************************************************************* 7.
