< 2 - INTRODUCTION > [ SQ002 ]

Welcome! This guide contains in-depth information about all of the various
optional sidequests and mini-games found throughout Okami. Specific locations,
time of availability and any rewards gained are listed, as well as hints and
tips for some of the challenges. Mini-games pertaining to the progression of
the main story are not covered. Perhaps in a future update I'll include them,
but for now please consult one of the fine walkthroughs posted on GameFAQs.
Locations of clovers, barren trees and treasure chests are not listed either.
Most of these are quite obvious (and too numerous) and shouldn't require a
guide to track down. Again, a future update may contain some/all of those
things. We'll see.

If you're playing Okami for the first time I recommend you use this guide only
as a last resort or upon reaching the point of no return. Some minor spoilers
are contained within and I'd hate to ruin any surprises for you!

One last note: Nearly every one of the sidequests and mini-games can be done at
any point in the game once the minimum amount of story progression has been
made. The only deadline you face is the point of no return. Issun will tell you
(in bold red letters) when that time has come. After passing that point, your
only choice is to finish the game or reload an earlier save file.

Enjoy!

< 3 - ANIMAL TOME > [ SQ003 ]

Scattered all around the lands are various types of animals just hankering for
a snack. In return, each animal will shower you with some praise. Simply
approach an animal and press "circle" when the onscreen prompt appears, then
choose the appropriate food type from your menu and press "X". In order to feed
some of the Canine Warriors you will need to manually enter the menu to select
their food, as there will be no onscreen prompt to do so.

How they're listed:
-> Animals are presented in the same order as they appear in the in-game menu,
top to bottom, left to right.
-> Animal type / food type(s).
-> Percentage given / praise given / area name / specific location.
*Please note that depending on the order in which you feed the animals your
percentage may vary by +1 or -1. However, regardless of the order in which
you do this, you will still receive 100% when done.

Now that you've got 100% completion for the animal tome, what do you get in
return? Well, other than 1,191 praise, nothing. At least you helped strengthen
Ammy's role as "mother to us all" by feeding every starving animal in all of
Nippon, though, eh?

< 5 - DEVIL GATE TRIALS > [ SQ005 ]

-> What are the devil gate trials? They're a series of ten consecutive battles
consisting of a variety of enemies, all of whom now boast enhanced strength
and defense. Don't underestimate these foes! If you go in unprepared you can
be easily overwhelmed in a matter of seconds! It's a good idea to learn any
dojo moves currently available to have as many fighting options as possible.
-> If you've progressed far enough, be sure to purchase the Golden Ink Pot from
the Emperor in Sei-an for 100 demon fangs. This artifact will be extremely
helpful! Also, be sure you're well stocked with Holy Bones and Vengeance
Slips. Steel Fist Sake, Steel Soul Sake and Exorcism slips will come in
   handy as well.
-> Using the holy artifact Wood Mat between battles will help conserve your
holy bones for use during battle. Just let Amaterasu idle till she lays down
and heals up. Don't worry about the money, you'll make plenty more during
   the fights!
-> It's best to focus on one or two enemies at a time and clear out the weaker
ones first, as they are generally more plentiful (and faster) than any
   stronger foes also present.
-> If you decide to leave before finishing all ten trials to go save or buy
more items, when you return you will have to start over at the first fight.
-> Don't forget that Ammy comes pre-installed with the best weapon in the game:
the celestial brush! Veil of mist is your best friend! Use it!
-> You must face a Spider Bandit before the devil gate will be active, but he
can be defeated in the same manner as the Spider Queen you faced earlier in
the Tsuta Ruins. Paint a vine from the konohana flowers to the hooks on his
rear. Once he opens up, attack! Repeat till dead!

< 6 - FISH TOME > [ SQ006 ]

Fishing is a fun (though sometimes frustrating) mini-game you can partake in
throughout the game. A specific story event must occur before you may begin and
there will be certain times when you can't fish because you must continue with
the story.

How they're listed:

-> Fish are presented in the same order as they appear in the in-game menu, top
   to bottom, left to right.
-> Fish type / location / size / # of strikes / D = day, N = night.
-> Normal resale value / bonus resale value & location of merchant.
*The Tool Dealer is the merchant you must speak with in Sei-an.
*With three exceptions, none of the fish caught in Kamui sell for a bonus.

Availability:

Agata Forest - This fishing spot opens after you fight Waka in Taka Pass. It's
no longer available after clearing the Gale Shrine if you pass
beyond Agata into Shinshu Field. No worries though, as all the
fish here can be caught in Sei-an as well. Speak to Kokari when
               you want to start.

Sei-an A.Q. - This spot opens after you've cured the Emperor and will remain
available for the rest of the game. Speak to Benkei when you're
               ready to start.

North Ryoshima - Fishing here is open upon entering the area, however, you'll
first have to help the fisherman catch a marlin for Ume at the
restaurant. After that, leave the area and come back and
you'll be able to fish at your leisure. Find him on the dock
on the west island. Be sure to purchase the Marlin Rod from
the Tool Dealer in Sei-an and give it to him when he asks to
get things started. Available throughout the rest of the game.

Kamui - After blooming the guardian sapling you can begin fishing in these
chilly waters. Our young friend Kokari has left Agata and moved up
north. You can find him near the dojo whenever you're ready, till the
        end of the game.

all, but it doesn't hurt. If you plan on completing the Devil Gate trials, it's
a good idea to collect all the sun fragments first.

1. Hana Valley - Bloom all the trees and cursed grass in the area and a chest
with the sun fragment will appear at the wall painting.

2. Kamiki Village - In a chest on the island behind Susano's house. You need
water lily or the water tablet to reach it.

3. Gale Shrine - In a chest on the small overhang near the stairs at the top of
                 the windmill.

4. Kusa Village - On the last wooden platform beyond the banners. You need the
                  galestorm tech to reach it.

5. Taka Pass - Obtained as a reward by completing Bingo's digging game.
*see "Other Stuff / Taka Pass" for more details.

6. Ryoshima Coast - In a chest after defeating the Spider Bandit.
*see "Devil Gate Trials" for more details.

7. Sunken Ship - In a chest on the top platform behind a hidden wall in the
room with the large cannon. Paint a cherry bomb on the marked
spot of the cannon to destroy the wall.

8. Sei-an C.Q. - In a chest in the front-right room of the building in the
southwest corner. Cherry bomb the crack in the wall on the
side of the building to gain access.

9. N. Ryoshima - In a chest after defeating the Spider Bandit.
*see "Devil Gate Trials" for more details.

10. Catcall Tower - In a chest at the end of the platform behind the cat statue
at the top of the tower.

11. Kamui - In a chest after defeating the Spider Bandit.
*see "Devil Gate Trials" for more details.

12. Wep'keer - In a chest under the small bridge behind Kai's hut.

13. Kamui/Ezofuji - In a chest on the north ledge. Vine to the konohana flower
near the hut by the Wawku Shrine entrance to reach it.

14. Inner Yoshpet - Buried in a chest at the end of the right path just before
the end of the third section.

15. Wawku Shrine - Rewarded after defeating Lechku and Nechku.

< 10 - WANTED LISTS > [ SQ010 ]

The wanted lists contain the names of five monsters that various characters
would like eradicated. The first person, Mika, you will meet during the story.
The other three people you will need to seek out on your own.

Here are some things you should know about the wanted monsters:

-> They're always in the area in which you receive the list.
-> They only come out at night.
-> They're always marked with an exorcism arrow and appear within a red
   barrier.
-> The location where you find each monster is fixed, but the monster that
appears at said location is random.
-> If you leave the area before finding all five, then return, all of the demon
scrolls will reappear, making it that much more troublesome to find the last
   one or two you need.

Once you've defeated all five monsters and crossed their names off the list,
return to the person you got the list from for a reward.

< 11 - ZODIAC TREASURES > [ SQ011 ]

Though the zodiac treasures aren't really part of a quest or game, due to the
fact that you can only get one of each per playthrough (with one exception)
I'm going to include them. You may need to bloom a Guardian Sapling or perform
some other task first, but as long as you do this before passing the point of
no return, there are no limitations on when you can obtain them.

-> They are listed here in the same order as found in the treasure tome, top to
bottom, left to right (the first one appears in row 3, bottom space).
-> All of the zodiac statues are in treasure chests at the listed location.
-> They're not necessary for story progression/completion, so you may sell them
   if you wish.

1. Rat Statue: Shinshu Field, behind the bombable wall at Tama's house.

2. Bull Statue: Agata Forest, buried under the hard-dig spot at the entrance to
                Tsuta Ruins.

3. Tiger Statue: Taka Pass, on top of the boulder in the upper area when
exiting from the tunnel to your right. Vine to the nearby
konohana flowers, making your way towards the boulder and drop
                 down from above.

4a. Rabbit Statue: Kamiki Village, underwater in the river by the bridge.

4b. Rabbit Statue: Gale Shrine, under the elevator platform. Stay off the
elevator and draw a cherry bomb on the center of it to raise
the lift and gain access underneath it.

5. Dragon Statue: City Checkpoint, on top of the large boulder in the river.
Vine to the nearby konohana flowers to reach it and drop down
                  from above.

6. Snake Statue: Ryoshima Coast, in a clamshell on the island with the rope
                 bridge, near the Sunken Ship.

7. Horse Statue: Sei-an C.Q., around the backside of Tao headquarters. Use
waterspout on the small pond in the southeast corner to access
                 Tao HQ.

8. Sheep Statue: Sei-an A.Q., buried on Himiko's palace grounds, outside in
                 the front-right corner.

9. Monkey Statue: Sunken Ship, in the water-filled room where the seaweed hand
is, on the ledge above where you need to roll the barrel onto
                  the chains.

10. Rooster Statue: Imperial Palace, behind the shade, to the Emperor's left.

11. Dog Statue: N. Ryoshima, buried among some bushes at Watcher's Cape.

12. Boar Statue: N. Ryoshima, under the hard-dig spot near Yoichi the archer.

13. Cat Statue: Catcall Tower, on the seventh level platform when ascending the
                tower.

< 12 - OTHER STUFF > [ SQ012 ]

The following sections each detail the optional quests and games you can do in
each area of Nippon. Some quests, such as those involving NPC's who give stray
beads, may carry over into another area. I've tried to be as thorough as
possible without repeating too much information over multiple sections,
therefore, some quests will refer you to another section of the guide for more
details, such as devil gates or wanted lists.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Turnip digging: Dig up all ten turnips in the garden while trying to avoid
a smack on the nose from Mushi's Mama. You'll get some food for your astral
pouch but nothing more. This game must be completed at least once to
progress the story early in the game. You can replay it any time you like,
but other than food, there are no rewards. Feel free to use power slash or
slop a bunch of ink on Mushi's Mama to slow her down. Depending on how far
you've played, certain other brush skills will work against her as well.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Mrs. Orange's Laundry: Along the riverbank you will find Mrs. Orange doing
her laundry. Speak to her a couple times to learn that she's missing her
drying pole. Use your brush to draw a line connecting the two nearby posts.
Speak to her again and she'll mention the sun needs to be closer for her
laundry to dry quicker. Draw sunrise in the sky and she'll reward you with 7
praise. Also, if you visit her house at night after helping with the
laundry, she'll give Ammy some cherry cakes to help fill the astral pouch!
   Yummy!

-> Komuso: He's the guy wearing what resembles a basket on his head. You can
find him where the mountain paths intersect, below the lookout platform. You
can start your quest for stray bead #52 by talking to him now. Defeat the
monsters in 12 seconds or less to receive 7 praise. Once successful, he will
   later move to Kusa Village.
*You can speak to Komuso after restoring Kamiki when you learn sunrise.
*Full details about Komuso can be found in the "Sei-an" section.

-> Camille & Camellia: C & C can be found at Sakuya's guardian sapling. Be sure
to go around the arch, not under it, or you won't find them there. After
fighting Waka in Agata forest you can go back to Kamiki and talk with them
to begin your acquisition of stray bead #50. When Camille says "If someone
would just hit me, I'll wake up from it", press square and give her a good
ol' headbutt! You'll receive 10 praise and help get C & C started on their
   journey across Nippon.
*Full details about C & C can be found in the "Sei-an" section.

-> Sun Fragment: After learning bloom and restoring the guardian sapling, run
through the area and restore all of the barren trees, cursed trees and
cursed grass. Once you've done so a chest will appear at the wall painting.
Open the chest to get the sun fragment.

-> Ida the Messenger: Once you've restored the Guardian Sapling in Shinshu you
can find Ida on the path by the catwalk statue. Give him a traveler's charm
to perk him up, and off he goes! Speak to him and he'll ask if you're up for
a race. After beating him three times he'll hand over the gimmick gear,
needed to learn the lightning upgrade, Thunderbolt! Once you get it, return
to Sei-an A.Q. and head to the rear of the clocktower to the left of
Himiko's Palace. Use your catwalk ability to climb the tower and hand the
gimmick gear over to Gen. Paint a bolt of lightning on his machine when
   prompted.

-> Press square to dash right at the start and follow alongside him, not
directly behind. When you get close enough press square again for a headbutt
   and the win!

-> Following is a list of the earliest times you can race Ida:

   1. After accepting the mission at Kusa Village to find the Canine Warriors.
   2. After the Kamiki festival.
   3. After clearing Oni Island.

-> You'll also receive 10, 30 and 50 praise respectively, for winning each
   race.

*If you choose to do this later in the game, simply change day into night
and back again, and you can do each race right away as long as the minimum
amount of progression has been made in the story at that point.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Nameless Man & Statue Offerings: After blooming the guardian sapling you can
find the Nameless Man at his house near the entrance to Hana Valley. Cross
the river and defeat the devil gate to restore his kilns. When you speak
with him at various points through the game he'll present you with a vase.
You may have noticed small statues scattered around the field which Issun
comments on, suggesting you make an offering. After bringing a vase to each
of the five statues, speak with the Nameless Man and he'll hand over stray
   bead #10.

-> Following is a list of where the statues are and the name of each vase
with the earliest you can get each one. It doesn't matter which vase you
offer to which statue, nor the order in which you do so. You will also
   receive 5, 10, 15, 20 and 50 praise after each offering, respectively.

   1. A bit in front of the Nameless Man's house by a rock along the path.
   2. Behind a bombable wall near the catwalk statue.
   3. On the upper path by a rock near the bridge over the waterfall.
   4. At the base of the ramp to the Moon Cave turn left and head into the
      corner.
   5. At the end of the path where the Moon Cave entrance was.

Azure Neck: After accepting the mission at Kusa Village to find the Canine
                Warriors.
Indigo Neck: After the Kamiki festival.
Rust Neck: After blooming the guardian sapling at Ryoshima Coast.
Auburn Neck: After a day passes since delivering the third vase.
Pure Neck: After bringing Lika to the Wawku Shrine gate.

*If you choose to do this later in the game, simply change day into night
and back again, and a new vase will be available each time, as long as the
minimum amount of progression has been made in the story at that point.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Tama the Pyrotechnist and stray bead #9: Down a ramp and out on the edge of
a small strip of land is a house, only accessible at night. Inside dwells
Tama, the guy you learned the Cherry Bomb brush skill from (well, you sorta
learned it from him). Late in the game, after having learned the brush skill
upgrades Cherry Bomb 2 and Cherry Bomb 3, go back to Tama and listen to what
he has to say. Ugh, depression has taken hold of the poor guy. Let's cheer
him up, eh? Draw a CB in the room, preferably to the far left or far right
to start. Quickly exit and return to the brush screen and draw a second CB
on the opposite side of the room. Release and return to the brush screen
once again and draw one more CB right smack dab in the middle of the room.
When done successfully, all three bombs will explode together (more or
less). Tama's passion will be reignited (pun intended) and he'll give you
   stray bead #9 as thanks.

< 12.4 - AGATA FOREST > [ SQ016 ]

-> Sleepy Bear: It seems our furry friend from Hana Valley has made his way to
the forest! After blooming the guardian sapling and fighting Waka return to
the top of the hill where you entered to find the bear catching some z's.
How do you wake him? By bringing him more of what he loves most. No, not
honey. Spheres! There are three spherical objects in the forest just dying
to have a bear stand on them! You will get 10, 10 and 20 praise
respectively, for each object you bring him.

-> Some tips: Don't rush! There's no time limit and since the bear's fast
asleep, he won't complain if you take too long. Use the left wall to guide
the object as you push it up the hill. If it starts to roll away from you
just block it with Ammy's body to stop it. Once steadied, continue pushing
it uphill till you reach the bear.

-> Following is a list of each object and its location:

   1. Cabbage: It's the big green ball near the top of the small set of stairs
that lead to the beach. There's also a demon scroll near it.
   2. Walnut: Clear the devil gate on the shore a bit in front of the
               merchant.
   3. Beehive: Hanging from a tree branch slightly east of where the walnut
               was.

< 12.5 - TAKA PASS > [ SQ017 ]

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Tea Master/Golden Mushroom: This fellow standing at the entrance seems to
have lost his favorite teacup. Head over to the corner of the upper ledge
near the Cutter's house to find some mole hills and talk to Moley to get a
game of whack-a-mole started. After three successful hits he gives you the
teacup. Return it to the Tea Master and he'll hand over the golden mushroom,
which you later need to give to Yama in the restaurant at Sei-an to learn
   fireburst!
*This can be done after blooming the guardian sapling.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Tea Customer: Standing alongside the Tea Master, this guy is in need of a
pinwheel for his wife. You'll need to make your way up to Kusa Village and
speak to the merchant to buy it. The paltry sum of 1000 yen will get you
said item. Hand it over to the Tea Customer to make him (and his wife) happy
and receive 10 praise for a job well done!
*This can be started after blooming the guardian sapling and finished after
    entering Kusa Village.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Moley & the Molsters: Found in the corner of the upper area near the
Cutter's house. It seems Moley is lonely and because no one ever plays with
him he steals things from people for the fun of it. Talk to him to get the
game started and headbutt him when he pops his head up from one of the mole
hills. The speed at which he moves increases after each hit so it pays to
have a keen eye and quick reflexes. Three successful hits nets you the
teacup on the first game and a treasure on any further attempts. Leave Taka
and return to reset the moles for another game.
*This game can be played after blooming the guardian sapling.
*Using veil of mist will have no effect on Moley's speed.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Bingo the Treasure Hunter: Available after you learn the galestorm tech,
you'll find Bingo off to the right of the path a bit before the portal to
the City Checkpoint. Use galestorm to blow the leaf pile away and reveal a
hole in the ground. Talk to Bingo and he'll ask Ammy to help him dig for
treasure. This digging game is played the same way as the one in Sasa
Sanctuary when you helped Mr. Bamboo, so you should know the basics of how
it works. Nonetheless, here are some tips:

  1. Power slash will break the dark brown blocks.
  2. Cherry bomb will break the brown & light brown sandy blocks, if you're too
lazy to press triangle to dig through them.
  3. Use waterspout to lift Bingo out of the water and up to new heights.
  4. Power slash Bingo to make him change direction.
  5. Paint bloom around Bingo to speed him up.
  6. Use galestorm to blow him over the spiked blocks.

-> Although the digging route is fairly simple and straightforward, here's a
brief summary of where to go:

-> Dig down on the left till you reach the lowest row of blocks. Head right,
use waterspout, dig down past the next column, head right to the next
water block and use waterspout again. Dig down past the next column and
head right till you get to the spiked block. Dig to the bottom and head
right, clearing away any blocks along the way. When you reach the corner
Bingo will signal for you to dig. Ta-da! Success!

   -> Reward: Sun fragment.

or less, he'll be ready and waiting among the bamboo trees. Speak to him to
trigger the battle and defeat the monsters in 25 seconds or less for 15

Princess Fuse's house. Vine up to the lookout platform off the path to
Fuse's place and head across the beam. Speak to blockhead then headbutt him

   1. After curing the Emperor.
   2. After the events with Kaguya at Sasa Sanctuary.

towards the gate leading to Sei-an City. Take a right into the forest and
clear the devil gate. Once done, a group of rabbits can be found among the
bushes. Look for the black and white one, feed him some herbs, pick him up

-> Camille and Camellia: After curing the Emperor C & C will be standing in the
southwest area of the Commoners Quarter, outside the Dress Shop. Here's a
rundown of how to proceed, including a recap of their events from Kamiki.

   1. At Sakuya's guardian sapling in Kamiki, speak to C & C till Camille says
"If someone would just hit me, I'll wake up from it" then headbutt her.
      You'll get 10 praise and they'll move to Sei-an.
   2. In Sei-an, speak to them again. When Camille says "Maybe if trees
appeared right here out of nowhere, well..." use the brush and paint one
or two dots on the ground in front of them to make a tree(s) grow.
   3. After clearing Oni Island and learning the deluge technique (obtained at
the rear of Himiko's palace; paint waterspout from the pool to each of
the four stones) talk with C & C again. When Camille says "Maybe if there
was rain right after the tree appeared..." paint another dot for a tree,
followed by two vertical lines for deluge. These must be painted
separately. Release R1 after the dot. As the tree pops up, press R1 and
paint deluge. Talk to them once more and you'll get 50 praise and stray
      bead #50.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Komuso: At last! Komuso is in the Aristocratic Quarter by a tree, just to
the left behind Rao's Lecture Hall. You can fight for him as soon as you
enter the area, even before disposing of the mist clouding the city.

-> Here's a rundown of his locations and required time limit at each:

   1. Kamiki / At the intersection of the mountain paths. Defeat the monsters
in 12 seconds or less for 7 praise to move him to Kusa.
   2. Kusa / In the bamboo forest. Defeat the monsters in 25 seconds or less
for 15 praise to move him to Sei-an.
   3. Sei-an / By the tree behind Rao's Lecture Hall. Defeat the monsters in 30
seconds or less for 20 praise and stray bead #52.
*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Blossom: Found outside her house during the day (and inside it at night) in
the southwest section of the Commoners Quarter, Blossom is in need of
medicine for her sick papa. Purchase the Herbal Medicine from the Tool
Dealer (across from the origin mirror) and take it to her. She'll give you
20 praise in gratitude for your help. After blooming all the cherry trees in
town (see "Mr. Flower" in this section for more details) enter her house and
speak with her papa. Give him one of Ammy's famous headbutts then follow him
   outside for another 20 praise!
*This can be started after curing the Emperor.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Lily Pad Ferry Service: Four people in the Commoners Quarter need help
getting around town. Speak to them to learn their destination then draw a
lily pad for him/her. Hop on board and use galestorm to propel the two of
you to the desired location. It's best to upgrade your ink capacity as much
as possible and equip the golden ink pot (bought from the Emperor for 100
demon fangs) to ensure a fast time and maximum praise.
*To get a little extra distance and save a couple seconds, draw galestorm
then immediately draw a lily pad. You'll start a few feet farther from the
dock and gain a small headstart. (tip courtesy of CJ800)
*The clock won't start till your passenger is on the lily pad and you draw
    galestorm.
*There is no penalty (other than a grumpy customer) if you finish with no
    time remaining on the clock.
*The Aspiring Carpenter is a one-chance-only character. Either save before
helping him to make sure you get the full amount of praise, or jump off the
lily pad and run away to reset him on the dock.

-> Following is a list of each person and their destination, as well as the
required time limit for each praise value:
*If you fail to get the maximum amount of praise on your first try,
transport the participant again and get a better time than your previous
attempt to earn the remainder, i.e., finish at 1:33 for 15 praise, then try
again and get a time of 2:00 or better for the other 15 praise. (thanks to
AzNsHaDoW553 and CJ800 for pointing that out)
*If you know you won't finish with the best time, you can jump off the lily
pad and run away to end the game and reset the character to his/her dock,
    then try again.

   1. The lady in yellow on the west dock. / Weapon dealer to the east.
   2. Aspiring Carpenter on the east dock. / Carpenter's shop in the NW corner.
   3. Lady in pink at carpenter's shop. / East street dock in the SE corner.
   4. Man in blue at SW corner dock. / Carpenter's house to the east.

   2:00+ = 30 praise
   1:59 - 0:30 = 15 praise
   0:29 - 0:01 = 5 praise
   0:00 = 0 praise

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Mr. Flower: Once you've cleared the mist from the city you'll notice some of
the trees in the Commoners Quarter are still cursed. Talk to Mr. Flower in
the northeast corner of town. He'll offer to cleanse the cursed trees by
performing his Gura Shuffle, but first you need to bloom all the other
trees. You only need to restore the 20 trees in the Commoners Quarter.
They're all easy to find with three exceptions: one behind Mr. Flower's
house, one in his house and one on his head. Yes, on his head! You'll
receive 1 praise per tree and 20 for the one on his head. Once that's done,
speak to him again and he'll run around town cleansing the last five cursed
trees, finishing with the one on his roof. Bloom each, including his roof,
and you'll get another 20 praise!

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Drawing the little girl's designs: At the east end of town is a little girl
drawing on the ground (you should recognize her current pattern). Speak to
her and you'll learn she's out of charcoal. Buy some from the Tool Dealer
across from the origin mirror and give it to her. Speak to her again and
look at the design in her thought bubble. Pay attention to that pattern she
"thinks" of, because now you will need to reproduce it. Go to the dress shop
in the southwest end of town and talk to Mr. Chic. He needs ideas for his
kimonos and will ask you to help out. Draw the design the girl was thinking
of till Mr. Chic says "That pattern almost seems as if it could make
something happen", then return to the girl for her next design. You'll
receive 20 praise from the girl after drawing each design as well as stray
bead #48 after successfully drawing the fifth pattern.
*This can be done after curing the Emperor.

-> Following are the required patterns with tips about drawing each one:

   1. Star pattern - Start in the bottom left and draw a star in one stroke
                     without lifting the brush.
   2. Love pattern - Draw a heart, starting at the bottom, going clockwise. Be
sure to make the left half slightly larger than the right
half and do not lift the brush.
   3. Henshin pattern - Draw a large "V", starting at the left. Do not lift the
                     brush.
   4. Happiness pattern - Draw four circles, making sure that each one touches
two others. It should look like a clover when finished.
   5. Character that represents God - Draw this using four separate strokes:
      a. A horizontal line at the top, left to right.
      b. A second horizontal line just below the first, left to right.
      c. A vertical line from the center of the top line. Curve it to the left
after passing through the lower horizontal line.
      d. A diagonal line from the center of the lower horizontal line, slanted
         to the right.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Thief of Sei-an: Hmm, it seems the citizens of Sei-an are suffering from a
string of thefts! What's a wolf goddess to do? Why, catch the thief of
course! Head to the southeast part of town and talk to the guard to find out
exactly what's happening. Light the three large braziers using either the
torches around town or the fireburst technique. Make sure it's night, then
slash the rock a bit in front of the guard (to his left) or the one next to
him. Hayazo the thief will pop out and challenge Ammy to catch him! Pay
attention to the order in which the thieves appear and the elemental symbol
with each one. Then, using the necessary brush tech's, chase him around
town, taking down each thief in order. Don't worry about him/them getting
away. As long as it remains night, he'll/they'll keep running around town
   using the same route.
*This can be started after curing the Emperor.
*The fourth round can only be done after clearing Oni Island.

-> Following are the element symbols and which brush tech must be used:

   1. Brown slash = Power slash.
   2. Red fire = Inferno.
*do not use firestorm or you may hit one of the other thieves
       accidentally.
   3. Blue water = Waterspout.
*do not use deluge or you may hit one of the other thieves accidentally.
   4. Yellow lightning = Thunderstorm.
*use your thunder edge glaive or Raiden the ghost for a source.

-> Following is a list of the items you recover, who they belong to, where they
   are, and your reward:

   1. Glass Watch / Samurai Dandy / Near the brazier by the origin mirror,
during the day or at night / 20 praise
   2. Millet Dumplings / Momotaro / Walking around by the dress shop during the
      day / 20 praise
   3. Chrysanthemum Hairpin / City Dweller / Walking on the bridge during the
day, in the restaurant at night / 20 praise
*return to him after clearing Wawku shrine for an additional 50 praise.
   4. Tao Mask / Abe / Inside Tao HQ (fill the pond near the guard with water,
use waterspout to reach Tao HQ), day or night / 50 praise and stray bead
      #49.

-> If you don't return one of the items right away and you think you've
suddenly lost it, just power slash either of the rocks where the thief
was hiding to find it again. Also note that Ammy will wear the Tao mask
      after recovering it.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Gen's Clocktower & the Gimmick Gear: Just west of Queen Himiko's palace is a
tall building with a large clock on it, but no doors. Fortunately, there's a
catwalk statue around the back, so scale the wall and enter. When you speak
to Gen, you'll learn he needs the "gimmick gear" to complete his latest
invention. Hand it over, or go race Ida in Shinshu if you don't yet have it
so Gen can finish up (see Other Stuff / Shinshu Field for details). You'll
also learn the brush technique upgrade, Thunderbolt, in the process!
*This can be done after clearing Oni Island.

-> Whirlwind Brush Technique: Before you can go fishing for leisure at North
Ryoshima you'll need to help the fisherman catch a marlin, which he'll bring
to Umi at the restaurant on the beach. To start, be sure you purchase the
Marlin Rod from the merchant at N. Ryo or the Tool Dealer in Sei-an. Next,
head to the island to the west where you'll find a man standing on the edge
of the dock. Give him the Marlin Rod and start fishing! The third attempt
should yield the marlin, so do your best to reel it in. This sucker moves
fast, so repeatedly tap the analog stick as you try to subdue it. This can
be troublesome, so be patient and don't rush, otherwise you'll just end up
using all of the fisherman's stamina, resulting in him going for a swim,
leaving you to repeat the whole process.
Once you've caught the marlin the fisherman will rush off to Umi's. Follow
after him, head into the restaurant and speak with the chef. Take note of
the painting on the wall of three horizontal lines. Umi will whip up his
specialty and when prompted you will need to draw the symbols from that
painting. Congrats! You just learned Whirlwind! Woooooosh!

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Urashima & the Treasure Box: Poor Urashima. It seems the other kids don't
believe that he found a palace under the sea, so they continually bully him.
Have Ammy chase the other kids away, give Urashima a good solid headbutt and
listen to his tale of woe. After a little story progression you'll find
yourself in the Dragon Palace, the very place Urashima speaks of! Once
you've dealt with the Water Dragon, use rejuvenation on the fish bones and
dead grass where you dived into his mouth. A chest will appear with a
treasure box inside. Bring it back to Urashima. If it's daytime he'll be on
the beach, at night he's in his hut (the one near the dock where you met
Orca). You'll receive 20 praise and stray bead #66 as thanks.
*You can get the treasure box after exiting the Water Dragon but you can't
give it to Urashima till after clearing Oni Island.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

-> Yoichi the Archer: Upon entering the area you can find our pal Yoichi, the
archer who shot down the drawbridge at the City Checkpoint. He's on the
small raised section of land to the east by a golden pool of water. This
time he's honing his skills by shooting at an unripe fruit hanging from a
nearby tree. Use waterspout and connect it to his arrow just after he
shoots. The fruit will ripen and you can head over and power slash it down
   for 30 praise!

can head over to the hot spring room and speak to the heavy-set dancer. Her
dance troupe needs to get the water in the spring flowing again, so of
course you're going to volunteer to help! By now you've had to play a few
different digging games so you should be familiar with how it works. Still,
here are some tips to keep in mind:

   1. Power slash will break the dark brown blocks.
   2. Cherry bomb will break the brown & light brown sandy blocks, if you're
too lazy to press triangle to dig through them.
   3. Use waterspout to lift her out of the water and up to new heights.
   4. Use power slash to make her change direction.
   5. Paint bloom around her and she'll speed up.
   6. Use galestorm to blow her over the spiked blocks.

-> Following is a brief rundown of what to do and the route to use:

-> Clear the hard-dig spot first and proceed when prompted.
-> You'll drop all the way down along the left to start. Once you hit the
bottom you must climb back up. Stay to the right edge, using headbutts,
power slash and cherry bomb when needed. Some of the double-jumps
required can be tricky, so be careful and don't rush or you're liable to
mess up and make things worse. When you get back up top to the Dancer,
start digging your way back down, staying to the left. Grab any time
extensions if needed, continue downward, and when you hit the bottom
again, speed her up then dig when she reveals the spot! As long as you
keep calm, time shouldn't be a problem at all.

-> Once the spring is flowing, speak to her again and she and the troupe will
start running around it to get the swirly-whirly going again. When prompted,
paint a swirl on the water. You've just learned the brush technique fountain
   and you'll get 20 praise!

*If you don't do this during your first visit to the Dragon Palace, you can
go back anytime after clearing Oni Island.

-> Blockhead Grande: After blooming the guardian sapling in Kamui you can try
your luck against the final blockhead with his EIGHT weakpoints! He can be
found under a hard-dig spot on the small island on the frozen pond. This is
quite possibly the most annoying challenge in the game. Keep your cool,
follow these tips, and victory shall be yours!

-> PAINT THE DOTS IN ORDER! This is the most important thing to remember!
-> Use a digital camera or a cell phone camera to record a short video of
where the dots appear, then play it back and paint them accordingly.
-> Use a water-based or dry erase marker. If you're fast enough, write 1, 2,
3, etc. on your TV screen as the dots appear. You can also just connect
the dots as they appear, then paint the dots at each bend in the line. As
long as you remember where the first one appeared you shouldn't have a
problem. Wipe away the marks when successful.
*Personally, this is my favored method and it hasn't failed me yet!
-> Tape a thin piece of paper on the screen and grab a pen or marker or
whatever and do the same as in the above tip.
-> Get a friend (or two) and one of you memorize the first four dots and the
      other memorize the second four.
-> PAINT THE DOTS IN ORDER! I cannot stress this enough!

-> Reward: 50 praise, Gold Dust, a Silver Pocket Watch and stray bead #78!

left to find the Snowball Playground. Inside you'll find a kid who wants you
to make a GIGANTIC snowball for him. Just push it all around the area,
rolling it over the small snow piles to make it larger. Roll it back to the
boy to see if it's to his liking. If not, roll it around some more. You can
respawn the snow piles by exiting the playground and going back in (and your
snowball will still be the same size as when you left) if you're running
low. Once it's big enough the boy will give you 50 praise!

-> Race with Kai: After completing the events in Wawku Shrine you can return to
the entrance of Yoshpet to find Kai waiting. She wants to race Ammy and see
who's faster! This is another game that can prove very frustrating if you
   don't prepare. Heed these tips:

-> Go through at least once just to bloom all the cursed trees. You don't
need them distracting you from your running.
-> Equip Solar Flare! It acts as a fire source which allows you to melt any
icicles or snowballs that get in your way. Drawing fireburst (infinity
      symbol) works just as well.
-> Use the square button for a quick dash! You need to move as fast as
possible and by using dash you won't waste time building up speed.
-> Learn the route beforehand! Kai takes the long way around everything
during the race. By learning where the shortcuts are you can easily stay
      ahead of her.
-> When you reach the frozen lake, rather than running straight through it
as Kai does, head off to the left or right. There's no ice on the sides
so you'll maintain your speed and traction better, allowing you to keep
      the lead.
-> The snowballs will come at you in waves of three, from the left, right
and left. Keep this in mind so you can quickly avoid them!
-> Do not waste time opening chests or collecting time extensions! Treasure
can wait, and there's more than enough time to reach the finish line.
-> Keep calm and maintain your cool! It may take a few tries, so don't let
it get to you. Take a break if needed, then give it another try. It may
seem impossible, but it's not. Show Kai who's the fastest in all of
      Nippon!

-> Reward: 50 praise and stray bead #90.

-> I'm not sure this really qualifies as a sidequest or mini-game, but
nonetheless...There's an old granny poncle in a house high above Ishaku's
place, accessible via vine, who'll ask you to design a seal for her at the
cost of 99,999 yen. After agreeing to pay the sum, she'll tell you it was
just a test of your generosity, and do so for free. Draw anything you like,
just as you did for the imp mask in the Moon Cave. At the end of the closing
credits you'll see your design. Yup, that's all it's good for.

*Note - unfortunately, the end credits were removed from the Wii version, so
if that's what you're playing and you're looking for the seal, I'm sorry to
    say you won't see it.

-> During the blank loading screen you can press X repeatedly to make a
bunch of paw prints appear onscreen. After sixty prints appear, you'll be
awarded one demon fang. You can only get a max of one DF with this
      method.
-> During the loading screen when paw prints appear across the bottom of the
screen, you can press X to make the prints larger. If you successfully

< 14 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS > [ SQ028 ]

Q1. I can't find animal X in spot Y. Where is it?

A1. Are you sure you're checking the right location? I did my best to
accurately describe each spot, but some were a little tricky. If it's not
in the exact spot listed, look nearby. Some of the animals wander a bit.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q2. You said animal X was 5%, but when I fed it I got 4%. Why?

A2. As stated at the beginning of the animal feeding guide, your percentage may
vary by +/-1%, depending on the order in which you feed them.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q3. What do I get for getting 100% on all animals?

A3. A lot of praise, but nothing more.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q4. Do I have to fight all ten devil gate trials in a row, without leaving?

A4. Yes. If you exit the hole after six battles to buy more items or whatever,
you will need to start all over when you return.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q5. Bah! I can't catch fish X! Help me!

A5. Keep trying. There's no trick to catching any particular fish, it's just
random. Sei-an is an especially difficult spot, due to the fact that there
are twice as many fish there, compared to the other fishing spots.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q6. What do I get for catching all the fish?

A6. Nothing, but you can sell them for yen if you want to.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q7. Oh no! I think I missed a stray bead! What now?

A7. None of the beads can be missed. They are all in locations that are
accessible until the point of no return. Be sure you're checking the
correct spot. I did my best to accurately describe each spot, but again,
some were a little tricky. If you're having trouble finding one, you can
always wait till (or make it) night and look for the beam of light marking
    its location.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q8. If I collect 85 beads in my first game and the other 15 on my second
playthrough, will I get the string of beads right away?

A8. Yes, as soon as you get the final missing bead you will be given the String
    of Beads.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q9. Why does Bingo still have that green triangle over his head? He won't say
anything new no matter how much I talk to him!

A9. I guess they forgot to remove it in the programming stages, because once
you complete his digging game, there's nothing further to do with him.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q10. Gah! I can't draw the little girl's design! Help me!

A10. Pay close attention to the exact order in which each stroke is made in her
thought bubble. The stroke order is vital to doing this successfully.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q11. What's up with the lightning ghost in Sei-an?

A11. He can be used as a lightning source to help catch one of the thieves in
the fourth round, but that's it. If you do use him (instead of the thunder
edge) he'll be quite happy that he served some purpose!

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q12. I lost the Tao mask and the thief won't reappear! What do I do?

A12. At night, slash the rocks he was hiding in to find it.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q13. I didn't talk to Yoichi and ripen the fruit he was shooting and now he's
in Kamui! Will he go back? Can I still get that fruit?

A13. Nope. Once he moves north you're out of luck. Sorry.

*         *         *         *         *         *         *         *       *

Q14. I can't beat Blockhead Grande! Aarrgghh!

A14. PAINT. THE. DOTS. IN. ORDER!!
