Please keep in mind that if there is anything here that can only be applied to one server or the other, it's the North American Servers. So if you play on European, I'm sorry but I have no information on whatever you were looking for that could only be applied to one server! Most of these are just short answers, and you can probably find a guide or an FAQ that can elaborate on what I'm doing here. I took some of my original questions out, such as "What's the best weapon class?" because I'm sure you'll find it in an FAQ that has already been written. If you ever, EVER have any questions to ask that aren't already covered, and you want me to put them in my FAQ, then just shoot me an e-mail (contact info. at the bottom of the FAQ), or call me out on the Monster Hunter boards ;). The same applies if you know of a myth that I didn't include. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ [S1.2] /\/\How to use this FAQ/\/\ --------------------------- To jump to a certain area, just press Ctrl+F and put in the desired section code. ie: [S2.1] All the questions and myths have a contents page, so just go through the questions, and once you find the one you need an answer to, push Ctrl+F and then just type in the desired question number, (Q10, for example), and hit enter! Why would you ask us, avid MH players, who are just going to give you biased responses because we all think the game is so great? So before you ask on the boards: Yes. You should get this game. Go out and spend $20.00 on a new (or used) copy right now. Q02: Is this game good? ----------------- A02: Honestly, don't ask these questions on the MH board. Of course the game is good. We aren't going to tell you that it's bad. Nine out of ten people on the MH boards really like this game, so you're not going to get any good comparisons. Q03: What other games, if any, are comparable to Monster Hunter? ----------------------------------------------------------- A03: I've noticed that this question goes around quite often, especially when someone new is inquiring about how good the game really is. Personally, the only games I think are similar to Monster Hunter are other Monster Hunter games. This game has a unique story line that I personally have never seen before, and it is challenging even to some of the most experienced gamers. This is the only game I've played that requires you to slay giant monsters in order to improve your gear. "Nothing really. Honestly, MH is pretty unique. MH is like the only game that has you killing giant monsters to make armor and weapons." - Ortega Q04: Can I use my file on a different PS2, and still let my friend ------------------------------------------------------------- connect using my network file on my PS2? ---------------------------------------- A04: You most certainly can. This took me a long time to figure out. You have your game file and your network file on your memory card for your PS2. Your friend has the same for theirs, but for some reason you switched PS2s! That's A-OK. So, leave your memory card in your PS2 and also have your friends' in as well. Load your friends' character, then load your net file from the other memory card. I would leave the net file memory card in the PS2 until your friend has completely logged on, just in case. Once he's on, just take your card out. Don't be lame, make sure you take it out when it isn't a loading or saving screen. If you do that, I won't take the blame for it. I will probably laugh. Q05: Is it possible to PVP in this game? ----------------------------------- A05: There isn't an actual Player Versus Player function, however, there is no reason why a player can't incorporate his or her own version. For example, I've seen countless players post one star gathering missions for the sole purpose of the time allowed for the quest, the ease of completing the quest, and the lack of interruption from the big and ugly wyverns. They post these quests in order to battle "one on one". Though it is almost impossible to cause your opponent to fall unconscious this way, it is as close as PVP as you can get. You can take a few Small Barrel Bombs and Large Barrel Bombs and try to knock your opponent out that way. I've also seen people play a game similar to the previously mentioned one, but only this time they have a third (or fourth) player keep score. Each participant would get x amount of points for each time he or she knocks his or her opponent off the highest cliff in area 6 of Forest and Hills, for example. There is also a racing game that takes part in Forest and Hills region, area 6, as well. Take 3 or 4 players with at least one carrying a gun on an easy quest. The people not carrying a gun will race up the vines, and since you all go at the same speed, it is the gunner's job to knock you off by what ever means he or she can. There is a second kind of racing game where there are two teams of either one versus one, or two versus two, on a Two Rock Wyverns quest. The goal is quite simple; be the first to slay your Basarios. If you are, your team wins. Q06: Is there any way a player can access the regions when a quest is not -------------------------------------------------------------------- activated? ---------- A06: Unfortunately, no there isn't. It would be nice, though, if any player could just saunter off into the Volcano for a nice relaxing round of mining. Q07: What are some easy money making techniques, online and offline? --------------------------------------------------------------- A07: First of all, if you're playing offline, constantly hunting Velociprey and Velocidrome is an easy way to make money. And, if you kill your V-Drome without using all your Flash Bombs provided, you get to keep them! Bonus :D! Liver of Legend is also a good quest to get some zenni trailing. Take a hammer or a great sword, and you probably won't have to bother with sonic bombs. Just keep slaying and carving. Go get yourself two livers, deliver them and go back for 10 more! Keep collecting carves until you get bored, or the time gets low and run on back to camp to deliver that last liver. Spam-Killing the Yian Kut-Ku is also an easy way to make some cash offline as well as online. It may not be quick, though, depending on your skill or weapon. There are Kut-Ku Scales available to be found in the Forest and Hills or Jungle regions, hidden among dung heaps usually, but they aren't always easy to get your hands on. There are also 3 to 6 Kut-Ku Scales available in area 6 of the Jungle, atop the ledge (and the left side of the ledge) that is across from the entrance to area 4. Once you get to Rathalos, you can start killing him for money. But by that time, you might not even be in desperate need of it. For you onliners (hopefully not your first character online), don't forget to stop in the offline town for your freebie cash! Doing Giant Bug quests is useful. Take your poison weapon and have at those bugs until you die of raw boredom. You can sell the Monster Fluid for a pretty nice price, 500z a bottle. Save some each time, though, because you'll need it later on and it costs 5000z per bottle if you're too lazy to kill more bugs. Fishing is also a very, very profitable but boring way to make money. If you don't mind sitting there fishing for 30 minutes, then please do. Make sure you take enough bait with you to catch 14 Golden Fish. It doesn't have to be Golden Fish bait, but it helps a lot! I usually take some GFBait with me, materials to make it, and Mega Fishing Flies. Worms are infinitely available, so if you're a great hunter but a bad fisherman, no worries. What you do here is catch yourself 4 Golden Fish. Take them back to camp and deliver them. Go fishing again and catch ten more. Then use the rest of your bait to catch everything except Golden Fish. When the time starts getting low, run your fish reeked self back to camp and deliver that last Golden Fish. The 9 you have left sell for a lot of money, and if you sell all the other fish you caught, plus what you get in rewards, you'll be very pleased =). If you're a hunter with a rank of 13 or higher, your fastest way to roll in the dough is probably Land and Sky or Troublesome Pair (Six star quests). Start the quest, hunt the Raths and claim your prize! Then, when you return to the tavern, sell all your goodies for your hard earned payment! But, remember! If you're not HR19 or higher, you *can't* post these quests. Tough luck, find yourself a willing group! Q08: Which wyverns can I cut the tails off of, and how many carves do I get? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A08: You can cut the tails off of Gravios, Basarios, Diablos, Monoblos (Offline Only), Rathalos, and Rathian. Gravios Tail: Two Carves Basarios Tail: One Carve Diablos Tail: One Carve Monoblos Tail: Two Carves Rathalos Tail: One Carve Rathian Tail: One Carve Q09: Speaking of cutting tails, what other wyvern parts are breakable? ----------------------------------------------------------------- A09: Gypceros' light crystal, Monoblos/Diablos' Horn(s), Gravios/Basarios' chest, Rathalos/Rathian's head crown and wing claws. Q10: What is a plate, and what is it used for? ----------------------------------------- A10: A plate is a material carvable from Rathalos' and Rathian's CUT tail, a slain Lao Shan Lung, or it is attainable in rewards ONLY for Lao Shan Lung. It is a plus item (except in some cases), and is used in crafting "high-class" weapons and armor. For more information, please visit: Plate FAQ Akubarix http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/monster_hunter_plate.txt Q11: How do I increase my chance of carving rare items? -------------------------------------------------- A11: You can't. Contrary to popular belief, Luck Booster, Good Luck and petting those cute little piggies only ever help your chances of getting a rare item in rewards. It doesn't matter how many times you pet the pigs and make them love you. It will not increase your chances of getting a rare carve. Q12: What are Ruststones? -------------------- A12: Ruststones are stones (that have rusted over time) that can be polished into very strong, capable final weapons. There is a rusted weapon for all weapon classes EXCEPT dual swords, because duals are a subclass of sword and shields. Not what you were looking for? Ruststones FAQ Xiamut http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/monster_hunter_ruststone.txt Q13: Where can I find the Unique Items, and what are they for? --------------------------------------------------------- A13: Hunter's Citation: Received after you successfully slay Monoblos. Used to ----------------- make the Master's Blade. King Cactus: Can be found in the Desert (2, 7, 9) on HR13+ missions. ----------- Used to make Cactus Creamer. Lost Umbrella: Can be found in the Swamp (9) on HR13+ missions. ------------- Used to make Dark Parasol. Gourmet Spit: Online event reward "The BBQ Festival!". ------------ King Meat: Online event reward "The BBQ Festival!". Used to make Enormous Ham. --------- Q14: What is lava fishing, and where can I do it? (Bulgeros) ------------------------------------------- A14: Well, I didn't know lava fishing existed until I asked the GameFAQs MH community to help out with this FAQ. I mean, I heard of it before but I had never done it myself. And I can't go ahead and claim something liket hat as a fact without knowing myself! So Riisken and I logged on MH. I posted a five star Basarios: The Unseen Peril, and the two of us set out with out fishing rods in hand! Now, I'm not going to say, "You can only do this on a plus quest." or anything like that, since I have no idea. But you can fish in the western lava pool of area 4 (Volcanic region, obviously). The fishing spot is close to the entrance of area 2, where the cats hang out. It's nothing special. I caught normal fish with normal bait, and the animation is as if the lava was not lava, but water. Capcom just got a bit lazy ;). Q15: Is fashion really greater than function, and should I practice it? ------------------------------------------------------------------ A15: This is another of those "gom, opinions!" questions. I would have to say that "Fashion > Function" only applies to those who are confident in their Monster Hunter skills. Function is always really, really good. There are many armor sets and armor combinations with great skills that are usually very useful. Generally, new players shouldn't try playing with the lowest possible defense because their armor just looks that much more amazing. It just doesn't work out all the time. For the new players, I suggest sticking with the higher defense armor sets, if possible, until you feel comfortable with your hunting skills. BUT! If you're already comfortable with them, fashion is for you my friend! You should notice a difference if you switch from, let's say, full Rathalos+ armor to a mix of Battle and Leather armor. Or something. But whatever, you know? It's fun. It's usually a good challenge. Just don't go and chicken out when you get growled at =(. If you're going to go fashion queen, at least remember to forget about your DEF :D If you don't think about it, you won't get scared =). But don't forget to manage your health. "Basically, wear whatever you want. If your skills are such that you can get away with wearing nothing, then by all means, wear nothing. It also helps to break up the uniformity of everyone being in the same set." - Grayson Q16: Help! ---- A16: With what, pigs? We CAN'T help you if you don't tell us what the problem is, so don't expect people to be able to know what you're talking about. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ [S2.2] :::Offline::: ------------- Q17: Is there a multiplayer function offline? --------------------------------------- A17: No =(. That would also be pretty sweet. The only way you can play with your friends in the same room is if you each have your own PS2, and the items needed to connect online. Q18: How many characters can I create? -------------------------------- A18: Per PS2 memory card, you can hold three different character files. Once you use all three, you can delete one and make a new one. This means you can have as many characters that is equal to three times how many memory cards you have. (i.e.: Four PS2 memory cards x 3 characters = 12 characters) Q19: Can I get plates offline? If so, how? ------------------------------------ A19: Yes, you can. But they are almost useless to you offline, unless you feel like collecting them so you have them once you get online. You can't make any of the plus armor or weapons without other plus items you can only get online! You can cut Rathalos and Rathian's tails off them during the Troublesome Pair quest and pray that you get a plate. Remember, the tail has to be cut off for you to carve it. Lao Shan Lung Plates are NOT attainable offline. No, they aren't. No possible way. Sorry friend. Still need more information? Plate FAQ Akubarix http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/monster_hunter_plate.txt Q20: Can I get plus armor without going online ever? ----------------------------------------------- A20: No, you can't. Q21: What stones, ores, or crystals are available offline? ---------------------------------------------------- A22: Stones, Whetstones, Disk Stones, Iron Ores, Earth Crystals, Machalite Ores, Ruststones and Light Crystals are the only ones available offline. Q22: Omigod, why can't I pull the sword out of the stone? --------------------------------------------------- A23: Because you're not The One. I jest. Have you completed your Rathalos Urgent quest? If not, that's why! _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ [S2.3] :::Online::: ------------ Q23: I'm having problems connecting online, what aren't I doing right? ---------------------------------------------------------------- (mynamesKerran) A23: There could be several reasons why you can't get online, so check them all! First of all, you have to have the Internet. Once you have that, keep on reading this answer. Next, you need either a working modem and router, or just a modem. You also need a Network Adapter for your PS2 if you have a fat one, but you don't need it if you have a slim. You will also need an Ethernet cable! Connect your Ethernet cable to your Network Adapter, or slim PS2, and your modem or router. Then you need to set up a Network file. Make sure your memory card is in your PS2 for this, since the Network file gets saved to it. You need like 123KB of free space in order to save your Network file, also. Once you get it all set up, load it. Eventually you'll see a loading bar with a percentage, and a bouncing, jiggly "Monster Hunter" title thingy. If the loading progress halts at 20% or 40%, there's either a problem with your internet, your Ethernet cable, or your Network Adapter. Make sure your Network Adapter is in all the way, as well as the Ethernet cable. You may have to turn everything off and reset your modem and router. All you need to do that is unplug the power for like 30 seconds to a minute, and plug it back in. Then try again. If you still can't get on, you can either wait it out 'til your internet stops being terrible, or if you're impatient, phone your ISP and ask them if there's something funky going on. If you get passed the loading bars and the bouncing, jiggly titles, but you still can't get into Brave World, you might be banned. If you've never, ever, played online before and it says you're banned, log off and try again. Something similar happened to me once. Q24: How many accounts/screen names can I make? ----------------------------------------- A24: Per PS2 console, you can only create three screen names. However, that doesn't mean you're limited to only three. You can create screen names using your e-mail on a friend's PS2 and just switch to it when you get back home, since the accounts are not actually stored via memory card. Q25: Can I use my character's name from offline when I get online? ------------------------------------------------------------ A25: Technically, you could. But the only way you could do that is if you made your account to be the same name as your character's. Otherwise, your character's name is used for offline play only. No one will actually ever see what your character's name is. Q26: If I'm playing offline, is it possible to connect online without quitting? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A26: No. I would love that. I always wondered why there isn't a path to the online world, "Would you like to connect now? Yes/No?" That would be nice and convenient. Q27: Where do most people play, and how many people are usually online? ------------------------------------------------------------------ A27: You will find most players in Red Land. Players in Blue or Green are usually waiting for a friend, or playing with friends and do not want to be disturbed. At peak hours, there is almost 500 players in Red Land, and maybe 100 divided between Blue and Green. During the slow hours, there are as little as 70 people in Red and 0 both in in Blue and Green. Q28: Are people going to help me online? ---------------------------------- A28: Most people are willing to help others. First impressions count for many people, so if you enter a town full of hunters and you start acting like a 5 year old child, expect next to no help. If you want the most success seeking aid, I suggest the first two pages of Red Land. Those are the people who are only around to play, and eager to fill the empty hole in their team. If you're REALLY new, it's best to listen to the advice the more experienced players give you. It will increase your chance of them helping next time. Q29: Omigod! Where can I sign up for a clan, and which one is the best?! ----------------------------------------------------------------- A29: Most of us, at some point, have been in or started our own clan either just for fun or because we got too into the game. There is no actual place that you can sign up for a clan, but when you're online you'll be able to tell if someone is in a clan because they will have it in their comment. You can easily ask them about their clan, what it takes to get into it, etc. Most of the time, though, clans are just big groups of friends who don't often quest with other people and want to be recognized for their union ship. Q30: What quests can I join at HR13+, and HR17+? ------------------------------------------ A30: At HR13+ you can join ANY four, five and six star quests. However, until you reach HR17+, you cannot join any of the urgent quests after six stars. That is all 4 Fatalis contracts, and Lao Shan Lung+. Q31: How do I get Fatalis? -------------------- A31: Well, to start off. You need to be level 20, and have completed all your quests. You need to have slain 100 large wyverns. Not 50 Rathian and Rathalos. 100 Large wyverns. Not enough info? Fatalis FAQ Sanjuro333 http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/monster_hunter_fatalis.txt Q32: What event quests are available online? -------------------------------------- A32: In no specific order... Velociprey Hunting! (Slay 30 V-prey) Gravios Hunting! (Slay Gravios) Repel the Giant Dragon (Repel Lao-Shan Lung) Felyne Hunting (Repel 50 Felyne) The BBQ Festival! (Cook and deliver [a] Well-Done Steak[s]) On the Trail of the Beast (Slay Kirin) GMR Heavy Metal Crusade (Slay Diablos) The Legendary Kirin (Slay Kirin) Q33: What is the "Kirin Loophole"? (KabukiJake) ---------------------------- A33: It's how any hunter, regardless of being HR04 or HR20, can get Union Ores. While on the jungle Kirin quest (The Legendary Kirin), a player can instead hunt Vespoids, and carve them for Vespoid Bladefins. Those bladefins can then be traded with a Forest Elder for Union Ores! Like mentioned earlier, this allows any player to get any armour or weapon that only requires Rath plates and/or Union Ores as plus items! So you may see an HR01 running around with everything Rathalos+ except the helmet. Don't automatically assume he or she is cheating, because that person could have easily logged on and harvested those bladefins. The reason they don't have the Rathalos Helm+ is because it requires Firestones! Q34: What does breaking Lao's shoulder plates do? (KabukiJake) ------------------------------------------- A34: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I asked a couple other people, and from experience, breaking off his shoulder plates allows players to get the Plate item in rewards. Some also say that it actually increases the percentage of getting it in rewards, others say it only makes it possible. It's basically the same idea. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [S3.1] /\/\Myths and Lies/\/\ ---------------------- NOTE: A name in parenthesis ( ) indicates that he or she contributed the specific myth to this FAQ! ______________________________________________________________________________ [S3.1-I] :::Section Contents::: ---------------------- M01: Carving certain body parts increases your chances of getting the item you want! This is so false that it really IS funny. If, for example, you find yourself slaying a Yian Kut-Ku, please do not be compelled to carve on his beak just because you want a beak. It just doesn't work this way. Too bad, though. The truth is, carving the beak for a beak will only increase your chances of getting other carves. Okay, I lied. That's false too. M02: Cutting off Gravios' tail decreases your chances of getting a Gravios --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wing! ---- Hahah... Ha. Honestly? I fell for this once when I was "Let's kill Grav+ I need a wing! A wing! Why can't I get a wing!?" But I learned. Whether or not you cut off Gravios' tail makes no difference in your percentage to carve a Gravios Wing. The same thing goes for cutting the tail off any other wyvern. M03: You can get any HR13+ item in offline Troublesome Pair! (Insanitism) ------------------------------------------------------ No, you can't. You can carve the plates from Ian and Los' CUT tail. (KabukiJake) ----------------------------------- This is just not true. Sorry again. M05: You can't get a Majestic Horn unless you slay Diablos! ----------------------------------------------------- Ah, this would suck hardcore if it was true. Do you realize how many Maj Runs most of us have been through? If we had to kill a Diablos over and over again for every time we wanted a Maj Horn, I might end up actually liking Four Horns. You CAN get a Maj Horn if all you do is enter a quest with him in it, break off his horns and complete the quest. M06: It's possible to break open Monoblos' chest plate! ------------------------------------------------- No. The most you could do by repeatedly hitting Monoblos' chest is kill it. You cannot break open its chest in order to increase your chance of carving a Monoblos Heart. M07: Dark Metal Boots deal Dragon damage! (KabukiJake) ----------------------------------- Well that would be pretty sweet right. But it's false. M08: You can cut/damage Lao Shan Lung and Fatalis' tail! -------------------------------------------------- You can't. Why would you want to? There are no "Lao Tail" or "Fatalis Tail" items. Besides, Lao's tail generally kills if you get hit by it and/or are very careless. And if you get too close to Fatalis' tail, you get hurt too. Why would you even TRY to cut them? M09: If you count the number of times Lao screams, you'll know when he's almost -------------------------------------------------------------------------- dead! (KabukiJake) ---- Hehehehe. I remember back when I used to count Lao roars for my team. Keep on having fun with that :3 M10: Carving Lao's back heals it! (mynamesKerran & Acrospino) --------------------------- No no no. No. M11: Hammers and Bowguns can cut tails! --------------------------------- No. M12: Bone Broadaxe can cut tails! (Acrospino) --------------------------- But... It's a hammer. e_o M13: Fatalis plates really do exist! ------------------------------ No, they don't. There are only three plates. The come from both Raths, and Lao. GG, though. M14: "You Couldn't Carve Anything Off" is the real way to get a plate! ---------------------------------------------------------------- No, this phrase does not increase your chances of carving a plate by 1% each time. Greg is wrong. M15: Wearing certain armor gives you 100% plate carving rates! -------------------------------------------------------- There is no skill that increases your chances of carving a plate by any degree. Greg is wrong again. M16: Throwing stones into the fire pit brings Firestones to rewards! -------------------------------------------------------------- (Riisken) It's Dragonite Ore, not Stones. God... Just kidding. You can try it if you want to, but you'll just be wasting your time. M17: There's a Secret Wyvern named Earthias! (SyfaOmnis) -------------------------------------- Earthias is just a board rumour. M18: What about Bonarios? ------------------- Probably a typo at some point, but is now a really pathetic board rumour, like Earthias. M19: Giving extra help to female characters proves your worth! -------------------------------------------------------- Lol whipped. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [S5.1] /\/\Disclaimer and Acknowledgments/\/\ -------------------------------------- This document is copyrighted to I, Jennifer Hounsell.
