INTRODUCTION [INTR] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a Scouting guide for Front Mission 5: Scars of the War, released only in Japan on the Sony PlayStation 2. This is a specific guide only for the game's unique gameplay featue, Scouting. This will not document any material pertaining to the game's missions and whatnot so please don't send any questions to my e-mail address about that. Go to GameFAQs if you are looking for walkthroughs of the game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BASICS [BASE] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the first time in any Front Mission, you can recruit pilots to assist in battles throughout the game. After getting past a certain plot point, you are free to Scout various characters and recruit them for usage in the game. Initially, you are only restricted to 4 extra pilots, a maximum of 10. After progressing further through the game, the maximum increases to 12 pilots. As far as the pilot and their capabilities go, it is dependent on the time of their appearance and where you are in the game. This is constant for the entire game and does not change whereas their specialty Job will improve over time. One other constant is the Status Evasion parameter. This stays at 0% for every pilot save exceptions to this rule. A: The feature of looking at a pilot's status is enabled right from the start of the game. Scouting them does not become available until after receiving a promotion to the Strike Wyverns outfit. Q: Hey, I traded my Assault pilot for a Gunner pilot, but I can't Scout them again! What gives? A: Scouting is a one-time deal only. Once you trade out a pilot, you can never re-Scout them in the game. The only two pilots that can never be taken out would be Walter and the pilot in the second slot, a Mechanic. This is due to plot and character development reasons. Q: I wanted to Scout a pilot but after I finished a mission and went back to base, they weren't there! Why is this? A: Each pilot can only be Scouted during certain time periods within the game. For a good number of them, they can only be Scouted in only one time period. Q: Are there any special reasons to assemble certain squads from Scouting? A: Yes, there are Scouting bonuses for assembling certain squads and can be done any time in the game. Refer to the Scouting Bonuses section for more details. Q: What does the 'S' in some of the pilots stand for? Are they special or something? A: Yes, they are special pilots but their purpose will not be revealed in here. Play the game to find out more. Q: How come I can't Scout certain pilots? I can see their status but when I try to Scout, they refuse and speak back. I take it you have to meet certain conditions to Scout them? A: Yes, some pilots can only be Scouted after meeting certain conditions. Q: Any special pilots? A: There is a character from Front Mission 4, but their name will not be displayed here. He is a legend among many. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ S-TYPE PILOTS [STYP] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pilots with an 'S' in their portrait are known as S-Type pilots. These are rare and special pilots that have advantages over normal pilots for plot reasons. Play the game to learn why they are special since the point of this guide is for the Scouting. S-Type pilots gain 2 exclusive skills: one that is exclusive to all and one more that is Job-exclusive. One is EMP Recovery, which all of these pilots get. Without a doubt, these pilots require certain conditions to be met before they can be Scouted. Darril Traubel Conditions: See the main FAQ/Walkthrough by the author on GameFAQs... Laura Kimmel Conditions: Upon returning to the Eclipse after Mission 10, do not speak to her more than three times. Doing so enables Warlus to appear in the Hangar but Laura cannot be Scouted. An RP bonus may be gotten in exchange though. Upon returning to the Eclipse after Mission 15, talk to her then to Jeff for 4 RP. Julius Bancroft Conditions: Watt Turner must be in the active squad upon time of Scouting. Lily Pho Conditions: If you speak with Lily, do not choose the second option. This makes her unable to be Scouted. Cecil Bernadotte Conditions: Julius Bancroft must be in the active squad upon time of Scouting. Duke Takahashi Conditions: Watt Turner, Julius Bancroft, and Cecil Bernadotte must be in the active squad upon time of Scouting. Karl Gibson Conditions: Active squad must consist of ace, veteran pilots only.
