This is a Battle Simulator guide for Front Mission 5: Scars of the War,
released only in Japan on the Sony PlayStation 2. This is a specific guide
only for the game's unique gameplay feature, the Battle Simulator. This will
not document any material pertaining to the game's missions and whatnot so
please don't send any questions to my e-mail address about that. Go to
GameFAQs if you are looking for walkthroughs of the game.

2. BATTLE SIMULATOR						[BSIM]

This section documents all the details behind Battle Simulator. If you wish
to skip to the Simulators, go to Battle Simulator: Normal or Hard Mode.

BASICS								[BASE]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Battle Simulator is a traditional feature found in many Front Mission 
games. Its purpose is to sharpen the player's ability to formulate tactics
and strategies for use in missions through training battles. The Battle 
Simulator gains additional simulations based on meeting certain criteria or
beating certain missions. One change to note is that Battle Simulators no
longer give out CP like it would in past Front Mission games. The ability to
advance in pilot and Job level still remain, as do part rewards for clearing
certain Simulators. 

At any time that you feel the need to quit the simulation, select Give Up to
be taken back to the briefing menu or base. This will not result in a Game
Over sequence.

The data on the various maps used in the Battle Simulator can be seen below.

Battle Map 01 - A small map that takes place in an urban setting. Buildings
form tight passages that make friendly fire a common occurrence. Surface 
type is flat.

Battle Map 02 - A small map that has several buildings located towards the
Northwest. Much of the map is an open area and is suitable for all forms
of combat. Surface type is flat.

Battle Map 03 - A small map that has buildings by the North and ramps that
lead to higher elevation by the Northwest and Southeast. Walls cover the 
parts of either elevation, providing a good cover for Launcher units. Surface
type is flat.

Battle Map 04 - A moderately large map that takes place on varying elevation
and submerged areas. There are no obstacles in the area, but the submerged
areas make it difficult to properly utilize Striker units. Surface type is
flat on higher elevation and water on submerged areas.

Battle Map 05 - A moderately large map defined by narrow passages in all
cardinal directions and by the borders of the map. Buildings are also placed
within the gaps of the narrow passages, making it difficult to avoid friendly
fire. Surface type is flat.

Ya Dav, Rattanakiri Province, Cambodia(M12) - A variation of this particular
mission's map. Much of the area is still defined by narrow passages formed
by building placements. Friendly fire is a common sight. Surface type is
flat.

Rattanakiri Province, Cambodia(Northeastern Jungle, M13B) - The extended
version of this particular mission's map. There are more submerged areas in
this map than before, making it suitable for Gunner and Launcher units. 
Surface type is flat on higher elevation and water on submerged areas.

Fort Monus City(M7) - A variation of this particular mission's map. Not much
has changed and there is still a reasonable amount of open space to avoid
friendly fire situations. Suited for all forms of combat. Surface type is
flat on most of the area, but water by the narrow passages in the South area
of the map. 

Freedom City(M4) - The map for this particular mission has not changed. There
is a mixture of narrow passages and open areas in the map. Utilize combat
tactics effectively in any area of the map. Surface type is flat.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS(FAQ)					[TFAQ]

Q: Do you need to deploy the maximum of six pilots to participate in a
Simulator?

A: No, you do not need to fill up all placements with six pilots. You will
obviously need at least one pilot to participate. Walter and the second 
slot pilot are not mandatory to participate in the Simulator.

Q: How is Pilot EXP distributed in Battle Simulator? 

A: Pilot EXP listed in this walkthrough are based off of the maximum of six
pilots. Therefore, multiply the Pilot EXP listed by a certain number based
on the pilots participating. So if Pilot EXP is listed as 300, multiply the
number by 2 if only three pilots participate.

Q: Can I get a part awarded in a Simulator more than once?

A: Parts awarded in a Simulator are only given once in a game file. They are
also one-of-a-kind items that are unavailable outside of Survival Simulator
so it should be quite obvious about the quality of parts you can get here.

Q: How do you unlock Simulator 20? 

A: Simulator 20 comes from a Scouting bonus. See that particular section for
more details.

Strategy:

Take out the Launchers first then go after the Assault units. Bait the units
farthest away from your position using Walter and bring them to your Launcher
to soften them up. This Simulator should not be too difficult to pass.

Strategy:

Take out the Striker in front and go after the Launchers. Make sure your 
Mechanic is Repairing as much as possible since you'll take a lot of damage 
from the Launcher's Missiles. Once they run out, the Launchers become crap
so try and outlast their attacks. The Assault and Gunner can do some damage
but not as much as the Launcher or Striker units.

is a good stage to learn how the Link system works. Which is convenient as

Equipment - Rank 3. Legs with an MV rating of 6 or higher are recommended.

Strategy:

Your only opponents are the Gunner tanks. The terrain is submerged so it 
takes 2 AP to move one space. 6 MV leg parts can fix the problem a bit. Use 
your Links to take down the tanks and be sure to keep your Mechanic 
Repairing parts. Pairs of tanks attack at a time so it won't be too hard for 
you to pass this Simulator. Be sure to make good use of the Sensor Backpack
for your Launchers, mainly since they often will not be within firing range.

Strategy:

Your 6-man crew is split into 2 teams of 3. One will have to deal with the
3 Launchers nearby and the other with Assault and Gunner units. Take your
Striker with the Launchers and your Assault against the enemy Assault and 
Gunner units. Jammer should be with your Striker to prevent getting hit with
Missiles.  

When the Simulator starts, use your Jammer's EMP to disable a Launcher while
your Striker deals with the remaining Launchers. Send some Missiles from 
your Launcher to finish them off. For the remaining team, go after the 
Gunners first or the Strikers if they are in range. Assault units go last as 
they pose no threat compared to the rest.

Strategy:

This is an easy Simulator since all that's needed is to destroy all enemy
units with the yellow HP bar. There are three of them: a Gunner, Launcher, 
and Striker. They have several units protecting them so try to disable them
first. If a Jammer is on your team, give them a Sensor Backpack so your 
Launcher can safely destroy the Yellow units from afar. One is located on 
submerged terrain, but Hover legs negate the terrain penalty. If you want to
train your pilots more, destroy all but one then go after the non-Yellow 
units. Do it fast though since you only have 30 turns to finish this. Just
make sure you don't lose a unit or else you'll fail.

Strategy:

Everyone is on their own in one of the six spots in the map. Fortunately, 
the enemy composition is weak for the most part and everyone isn't too far
apart from one another. To be safe, have everyone equip an Item Backpack 
save Edward(he should have a Repair Backpack) with Repair items. Have each
pilot merge with the closest one and work as a duo to destroy the enemies. 
In the long run, you obviously want them all to merge but with a lot less 
to deal with. That's all for this Simulator.

Strategy:

This whole Simulator is a Heli Pilot destroying fest. It is not hard by any
means but avoid moving too much to attract the other Heli Pilots. Basically
avoid heading North-bound and move in a counter-clockwise or clockwise way
to avoid this. Having 15 Heli Pilots peppering one pilot with Missiles is no 
fun.. they will most likely be destroyed. Take them one at a time and the 
Simulator is easy. If you have 'S' pilots that have the aforementioned 
specialty, this is one is even easier. Double Launcher can potentially 
destroy one Heli Pilot with the right MS parts. One last note is the 
submerged terrain.. but you should all be using Hover leg parts.

Strategy:

Lots of enemies here surrounding you in this Simulator. Start off by going 
after the nearby Jammers and Strikers. You have some time before all of the
remaining units decide to go after you. The Launchers by the Northwest are 
often the first to start coming after you, but it will take some time. Your 
Striker is helpful if they are in the right positions to melee the wanzers. 
You should know they can't do much against Heli Pilots but act as shields, 
which is what they should do when you fight them. Repair every Player Phase, 
use the Links, and this one will be won eventually.

Strategy:

Tough Simulator since everyone is split into 3 groups of 2. Fortunately, the
map is small and not all enemies are using up-to-date equipment. Have all
pilots merge in the center, bulldozing any unlucky enemy unit in the way. Be
sure to put your Striker and Mechanic(presumably Hector) in the area with
the stronger wanzers. That group gets hit harder than the rest. Back to the
Simulator, grind the Strikers first and go from there. The last squad is the
6-unit Link squad camping out in a corner. Other than that, happy hunting!

Strategy:

Small map, the team is split into 2 groups, and lots of enemies. This isn't
too hard, but merging the groups is top priority to make destroying enemy
units easier. Your Striker will work wonders in this small environment and
most enemies standing right next to each other. If you prefer your Launcher
to be equipped with GRs or RKs, go ahead. Great way to soften up the enemy
forces. As usual, Jammers and Mechanics take priority then the Launchers or
Strikers come next. Take on the full Link squad last. Not too difficult but 
don't make too many mistakes in this one.

Strategy:

This Simulator is pretty rough if you are unprepared. Basically, you are 
split into 2 groups on opposite sides. Guess where most of the enemies are?
By the group to the North. The other group has few enemies in the way to rid 
off. Put anyone with strong wanzers and can destroy enemies quickly in that 
group, but do avoid putting a Mechanic there. Not good if they are in the 
North group. A Jammer will be helpful in reducing the number of attacks in 
every Enemy Phase. Even better if they have EMP backpacks with Repair 
capability. Just avoid having any Mechanics that way and you will be fine.

When the Simulator begins, have the North group go West and destroy the
lone Assault. With the other group, have them destroy the lone Launcher. The
game plan is to merge together, find a safe place to camp out, and destroy
the wanzers as they come to you. While it would be a good idea to meet at
the closest point West, go all the way to the West. Getting too close to 
enemies at the center will prompt them to move and attack. Once the whole 
team is together, proceed with the beatdown. By this point, you should know 
which enemy classes take priority.. just remember to go after the Mechanic or 
the Jammers first. Keep everyone healthy each Player Phase as to avoid being 
destroyed during an Enemy Phase.

This Simulator can get wild at times, but it is not too difficult. To get
the next Simulator for beating this one fast is though. You have to split 
into 2 teams of 3 pilots. One will deal with the local Gunner tanks and the
Heli Pilot.. your Gunner and Jammer should be here. The other has to fend 
off some wanzers nearby. By now, you should have your own methods of dealing
with the enemy units so go for it here. Due to the small area dimensions, 
enemies tend to be close together.. abuse your Striker's power. That is all

Strategy:

Oh, it's the big Garsade again except even stronger! And there's the Heli 
Pilot and Gunner tanks to join in on the fun! Of course, let's not forget
about the lone Striker and Assault but they aren't worth a mention. This
mission can be made easier by letting the enemies come to you instead of 
actively pursuiting them. The Gunner tanks usually will go first, followed 
by the Heli Pilots, and then the Garsade's group. Concentrate all of your
pilots on one target at a time to reduce the enemy count quickly. Once the
Garsade's group is left, go after the Heli Pilots first then destroy the 
big Garsade. The Assault and Striker pose no threat compared to our 4-leg
big wanzer. Remember to move close since its GR is a lot more powerful.

Strategy:

This battle is hard not only due the Garsade duo, but for a different 
factor. Numerous reinforcements come after the 20th turn and they consist 
of high Rank units, provided one of the Garsade units are dead as well. You 
must destroy the initial enemies as soon as possible. The team splits into 2 
groups for this mission, one will take on the nearby Garsade and the other 
against 2 RF Gunners. The Garsade will be no problem to deal with, but 
mandatory reinforcements show up nearby once it is gone. For the other team, 
only an Assault and Gunner blocks the way to merging with the team who took 
on the Garsade. Once they and the reinforcements are gone, head straight for 
the second Garsade.

The second Garsade is guarded by an Assault, Gunner, Launcher, and Mechanic.
Their wanzers are weaker than the previous ones but are Linked to the big
Garsade. Take down the Mechanic immediately than strike down the Assault and
Gunner units. The Launcher hardly is a threat so head for the Garsade first.
Again, full Links will bring this beast down. Finish off the remaining enemy
units afterwards. If you took too long in your attempt to finish the battle,
expect reinforcements to arrive consisting of various units.

Strategy:

Take out the Striker in front and go after the Launchers. Make sure your 
Mechanic is healing as much as possible since you'll take a lot of damage 
from the Launcher's missiles. Once they run out, the Launchers become crap
so try and outlast their attacks. The Assault and Gunner can do some damage
but not as much as the Launcher or Striker units. You will want to have
a full squad to ensure your chances of survival are at its highest.

Strategy:

This Simulator is standard material apart from the stronger units. Friendly 
fire is a fairly common sight in this stage so take care with the Links. As 
stated earlier, come back with stronger equipment and skills if this 
Simulator is too much at the point of its appearance. For the Launcher trio,
keep them occupied until they are destroyed. It is less work to deal with 
this way, but the other placement will have a rough time with incoming enemy
units.

Strategy:

This Simulator is tough to beat in 16 turns this time around. Maximize the
Links is one way of quickly killing the enemies. Position Darril so he can
make the most out of Links with his high skill activation. To take care of 
the farthest enemies, fire an RK round and bait them to Darril. The key to
clearing this fast is to manipulate the confined spaces so Darril can keep
attacking in Links. If this is not doable, come back at a later time.

key to victory and survival. Send your strongest two and Darril to the 
placement at the North. That trio needs to be able to clear out as many 
wanzers as possible in that area and the trio at the other placement should

Strategy:

If you were wondering if you were ever going to fight any Simulator enemies
at maximum Rank, this is it. Definitely tough, be ready to take down the
Gunner tanks as soon as possible. As long as they are around, it will be
difficult to keep everyone Repaired for the Heli Pilots. Once the Gunner
tanks and Heli Pilots die, concentrate on the Garsade. It will take quite a
bit more time to destroy as it has significantly higher HP than its other
appearances in the game.

Strategy:

This final Simulator is without a doubt hard. Enemy units are either close 
to or at max Rank. There is now a full unit Link squad to deal if should you
allow for reinforcements to arrive. With good planning and execution, you 
should be able to finish this even if you lose a few pilots from the 
reinforcements. Strike hard and fast is the key to victory on this Simulator.

WANZERS
-------

Comments:

This reward from Simulator 08 is a nice addition on any Job type. Vaje has
respectable stats in all areas and has three branching paths. Vaje AP has
the useful Anti-Piercing to ward off Assaults and Gunners using the said
weaponry. Vaje AS and its Anti-Shock are effective against Strikers and 
their mostly Impact-based weaponry. Vaje AF is most useful against Launcher
and Jammer-class weaponry. The Weight-Output ratio is solid and offers a
respectable amount of free Weight to equip quality parts. 

BACKPACKS

Turbo Specs(at Rank 1):

Comments:

This is the only other Turbo-class Backpack that can be obtained in a single
run from Simulator 20. Obviously, it should come as no surprise that the 
extra Output is good for Striker units for the free Weight. This is also 
useful with an Assault or Gunner unit for equipping better quality parts and 
weapons. Just never equip on a Mechanic or Jammer unit as this part's 
usefulness is negated and the slot is therefore wasted.

WEAPONS

Comments:

As the earliest reward at Simulator 02, the Artassaut MG definitely has its
uses. Its 5 square range is effective right from when this can be procured 
during the game, simply since one can attack Assault units without fear of 
a counter. Artassaut can branch into Artassaut C and SP, both which have an 
impressive 6 square range for attacks. Both derivatives deal more damage as
well and SP has the useful Remove Shield Limit part skill. This is not to
say that the base Artassaut is useless as its Job Experience + 10% helps in
the long run for Job levels. Especially if used on a Assault pilot.

Glowtusk Specs(at Rank 1):

Comments:

Another early prize from Simulator 05, there is no better substitute RF part
than Glowtusk. This RF has some impressive attack power and gains access to
the useful Penetration part skill. It can branch off into two derivatives:
the AS and SS variants. Glowtusk AS has a better Penetration effect at a 
value of 2 and comes with Remove Shield Limit. SS has the same Pierce value
as the base Glowtusk, but it has very high attack power for more Weight. 
The base Glowtusk has equal strength to AS, but its range improves to 8 
and this is helpful as Gunner enemies cannot strike past 8 squares 
normally. Easily a worthy weapon for Gunners.

Fujan Specs(at Rank 1):

Comments:

Although its short barrel may not make the weapon seem strong, Fujan packs
a grinding punch once gotten from Simulator 11. On an Assault unit, this can 
really grind wanzers with the multiple fire-oriented Barrage and Speed battle 
skills. Fujan M200 sports a nasty combo between Attack power and rounds fired. 
Fujan M500 is weaker than M200, but makes up for it with higher Accuracy. As 
with the base Glowtusk, the base Fujan can also strike at 8 square range once 
it is strengthened. Maybe not the best choice for Gunners, but it is something 
to look at for Assault units.

Be-11 Specs(at Rank 1):

Comments:

BZs are not user-friendly weapons as seen in past Front Missions, but Be-11
is just that once gained from Simulator 14. Although the weapon cannot be 
used at 1 square range, the minimized range helps in countering enemies that
would exploit the base minimum range for a BZ. Be-11 SD enables Remove Shield
Limit part skill and the XP variant is very damaging. The base Be-11 does 
gain the range advantage at 7 square range, which enemy Gunners using BZs
cannot counter under normal conditions. A good tool for some crowd control,
but use it properly.

Comments:

While MS weaponry is not as effective as in past Front Missions, this weapon
gained in Simulator 17 has its uses. Goldias is stronger than the Hangar
MS units, which already makes it worth using. The lower ammunition can be 
compensated by using Remodeling and branching off to Goldias S or L. Both
weapons are tied with another MS part for the highest damage overall, but 
these two have other features worth checking out. The S variant is equipped
with Minimum Range - 2 part skill and this allows for close-range attacks. 
The L variant has extended range for up to 10 squares for some really long
range bombing. The base Goldias pales in comparison to either derivative.
