Blitzball

by litlbummer

Pre-Foreword:

I started playing FF-X2 a while back now and got totally hooked on this mini-game. A friend of mine told me not to let all my Blood, Sweat & Tears (it'll make sense later) go to waste, and that I should organize and post this vast infinity of knowledge (emptiness, actually) I have acquired. I hope you like it, but if not .......

Post-pre-foreword:

There's some "Useful Stuff" toward the bottom. (You may need to refer to this often, I did)

Foreword:

Not like anyone really cares, but I have devoted entirely to much time to FF-X2 Blitzball. Without cheating, I have an awesome team in as little as 50 wins. (Unfortunately you have to lose a few for the posterity of the team. i.e. - better prizes)

Pre-post foreword: (or just the basic story)

In the beginning there were the "Gull Wings." (ugh) An aspiring new team created to take the place of the last Tournament champions, the Besaid Aurochs. (due to the arrival of a newborn baby the entire team couldn't make it?) (btw - that was not only their first time to win the cup, but to win a game at all in 23 years. A pretty easy reputation to live up to, really easy) This team can't beat their way through a wet paper bag, much less the enormously, nay, horrendously terrible, almighty Kilika Beasts.

GW: (sigh)

GW - sigh -"AWFUL," not just a quoted/bold/italicized/underlined/capital "A," but also a "W," "F," "U" and "L." (I know, tell me about it) However a few members have potential. Yup you know it, ("I'm down with") Y.R.P. ("yeah, you know me")

Yuna (Y) - train - i.c.99 -primary GL, also great MF and DF. Besides, how can you not? She is THS, and the main character. "A-team"
Rikku (R) - train - i.c.99 - MF all the way baby, can be DF and has a nice cat max. If she starts clowning around just demote her to GL. Remember this though, every once in a while, later in the game, put her in as FW. She rocks and her CS is something to behold. ("Ya can't stop this, du-du-da-du-da-BOW-DOWN-NOW .... can't stop this, du-du-da-du-da-BOW-DOWN-NOW, stop, Rikku time, oh yeah!!!") (Yes, it is a L/H-R) "A-team"
Paine (P) - train (poetic, yes) - i.c.99 - FW, spb on the RHS, as opposed to LFS. (wtf, I don't really know) ("Dr. P. is in the house." "Stop that!") "A-team"
Biggs - keep - i.c.10 - fots, what the heck he's CL. "B-team"
Wedge - keep - i.c.15 - see Biggs.
Shinra - sigh - i.c.30 - CL a/n. "B-team"
Buddy - sigh - i.c.20 - asap (1st) trade for Eigaar from the Al Bhed Psyches, later CL a/n. "B-team"
Bother (no, I spelled it right) - no comment - i.c.40 - not even worth the scum in my shower - asap (2nd) trade for Nimrook from Al Bhed, later CL i/w. "B-team"

A little more stuff, because I know what you're thinking:

*Shinra vs. Yuna:
*Shinra's cat starts at 3, Yuna's starts at 1. btw - Nizarut (Kilika's GL) starts at 3, Guado Glories GL (don't care about their names, i'll explain later) starts at 7. Sulla's (Lv1) starts at 8. Need I say more?
*Shinra's cat max's out at 79, (pretty impressive, right?) Yuna's only goes up to a meager 65. (both max out at 99 w/ IT)
*Shinra cat opt pt is limited to 3, Yuna's is 4. With I.T. Yuna is at 99 before Shinra is at 79.
*Shinra is a little punk and makes funny sounds when he walks. Yuna is (and always will be) THS.
((If you feel you must) You can trade Shinra for Nomma from Al Bhed to use on DF, at a higher cost and another sleazy "L")
'nuff said.

((As for GL: Rikku starts at 1 cat, but has 7 opt pts in cat and 9 in pas. (counterparts) She takes Nimrooks place around game 20 until Yuna catches up. I don't fire Eigaar or Nimrook, I wait for their contracts to expire, then throw them a farewell party. What can I say, I'm a nice guy like that.))

*Bother vs. ???anyone???
*Bother is fast and has high growth potential.
*Bother looks and acts stupid.
*'nuff said.

*Buddy - well, who really cares!!!

Lv1:

Shu (S) - train - FW & MF, I like her in CT, but it has made no difference I can tell. Bonus - starts w/ OHV. "A-team"
Nida (N)/Ropp - train - I like e/o as LF DF - spb. Nida has high cat max, I use him mostly. "A & B-team"
Balkei (B) - train - I like him as RT DF - spb. "A & B-team"
Sulla - use - GL until you score Nimrook/Mifurey. Let his contract expire or send him to a school for his faithful service, he deserves that much. (btw - I seen him, unaltered, consistantly catch CS from Al Bhed. If only he had higher numbers where they count, but he don't) "B-team"
Hildy - use - a/n "B-team"
Ukyo - use - a/n "B team"

Bragging:

None others needed, at all, but you can waste CP to S&T them when you have entirely to many to use on your primaries. Use them if you want, at a higher CP rate per 10 games, w/l.

gil (CP) rates: (my personal favorites)

GW = 3 CP/10 games after # i.c. expires, # trade or # schooling.
Lv1 = 10 CP/10 games
Kilika = 12 CP/10 games
Lv2 = 15 CP/10 games
Lv3 = 20 CP/10 games
Ronso/Lv 4/Guado = 30 CP/10 games
LvMax/Luca = 40 CP/10 games
*Besaid = 60 CP/10 games
Al Bhed = 70 CP/10 games
*Zanarkand = 90 CP/10 games
*note - These are good teams, but not worth the effort of getting the privilage to play, beating them, and trades required to train them to even fool with until later. (Although the Ace is pretty cool to have on your team)
#note - I did this to make you wonder what I was thinking.
CP/10 games - redundancy, just to aggravate you. Did it work?

More bragging:

That's it folks. This team will slaughter, and I mean an easy "V" over Al Bhed, in as little as 50 wins. (A few sleazy "L's" for training purposes) That's even with Eigaar, Nimrook and any others you may have acquired, returned to their proper spots and some time to build back their teamwork. ((Except my B - team, for them I lower all stats to 1 except end, R&R. Those don't really matter when they can't p/s) thats not including N & B))

Delayed Post-foreword:

Wise CP usage is the most important thing early in the game. It is very time consuming, extremely frustrating and you will need SRT, (amap) but it will make it oh-so-much easier later.

FF-X2 Blitzball - litlbummer style:

"How to Guide" or Blitzing 101: (just for us Dummies)

This page intentionally left blank.

Blitzing: (keep in mind: this is my plan, you don't have to do it this way if you really don't want to)

You start with 30 CP, (you can run around a bit to build CP up to 100 before you play your 1st game) (Graav is bottom RHS of the screen psyching himself up, 's kinda funny) - s/r - scout for at least 3 of the 4 free agents, for best results get Shu, Sulla and Balkei/Nida/Ropp, (I favor Balkei first) they will give you better odds in your first game. Exhibition with Kilika: win, (probably) Shu has 9 sht, Sulla has 8 cat and Balkei has 9 atk with 13 blk, easy money is on GW. ((I use a 4 - 2 - 1 formation until my DF is better trained, then I go with a 3 - 3 - 1. Later as my team gets HOT, I go with a 2 - 4 - 1. I use only 1 FW, the MF's amount to 5 FW and 6 DF. My B - team is always 4 - 2 - 1, (less shooters that way, you know Kilika) my preference. I mainly use center attack, post play is ok, but they waste so many shot opportunities setting up OHV and catching them it is ridicules. Do as you will))
First game (if you win) scores you 50 CP - s/r - scout for any of the four you don't already have, train all 6 primaries (Y.R.P.'n'S.N.B.) in sandbagging. Reason being is sandbagging raises atk, (brute force) which is essential early in the game against Kilika and Guado, and in turn lowers cat. You won't need cat yet, with Sulla, then Nimrook a little later. ((If you are firmly opposed to trading, you can swap 1 or 2 easy "V's" and a sleazy "L" for 18 "V's" and take Mifurey. (Lv3) Her cat is close to Nimrook, and she costs less than half his CP)) (I am close to letting Nimrook go by that time, though) 5 (max) easy "V's" over Kilika, dumping all your CP in atk, will get you ready to start abusing Guado. Watch your opt pt guide, the blueish # on the left, so your fat stays low, you save buku CP that way. (Explanation later, if I ever figure it out)
Now this part takes entirely to much patients and a safe and effective way to reduce stress, (SRT, amap) for you, not your characters, but it pays back in Plutonium. (I use a punching bag, it has saved my T.V., PS2, and my controller so many times, it payed for itself very quickly)OK, after spanking Kilika 5 times, (s/r) remember, patients is essential. (A punching bag really helps, too) Find a tournament with either "trade privileges" or "new training command" as 2nd place prize (this will be your 1st sleazy "L") with Kilika and Guado on your side. You can't beat the Ronso Fangs, Luca Goers, or Al Bhed yet, so don't even try. After many hours,(and several bleeding knuckles) hopefully you got Kilika in the 1st round with Guado seeded, but believe me, take whatever you can get!!! All you need is two trades and scrm, then you start going for the 1st place prizes, "I.T.-any/all." "New training command" is best to get first, no big if you don't, but it saves buku CP over RT. (Note - use the lowest opt pt as your guide, keep fat low that way, spend 9 CP counseling if needed, it's worth it on Y.R.P. but not S.N.B. they have lower opt pts overall) If you get the next "new training command," it's effective. HBB, or something like that, but it screws up my training window, so I stick with downtime. (The last three "new training command's," FW, MF & DF are useless, they raise some stats and lower others, wtf? I don't waste my time with these) Downtime gives you 1 - 2 fat reduction per CP, so always use half or less till you're at 1. (?) Downtime is much cheaper than I.C.U. so use it early and as often as needed. I don't like for my fat to go above 5, but I'm just anal like that.
Now that you are scrm'n your 6 primaries with Eigaar (smashing any/all opponents) and Nimrook (yawning, stretching out his arms saying, and I quote, "Oh dang, there's a ball in my hand!") carrying the team, for the most part Y.R.P.'n'S.N.B. can kick back with a fine Cuban cigar and a bottle of Tequila until the opponents get annihilated. ((btw - don't train Eigaar or Nimrook unless you plan on keeping them. If you do keep them don't send them to school, it will cost you a trade (1 or 2 wins) to get them back, every time, not to mention 70 CP every 10 games, w/l, have I said this before?)) You may want to exhibition against Kilika another time or two to check strengths and weaknesses. I like to watch 1st hand so I can see how and what they do. It takes longer, so if you are in a hurry to kick some butt go with the overhead view, s'up to you. Scrm all CP at the lowest opt pt. Later as your "V's" increase, your CP grows pretty quick, start pumping your primaries with pep talks. High mor mpb, no spb here, and keep fat at 0 or 1 at most, it really sucks when you start a game with 5 fat and get injured on the first tackle. ((I have seen my gals/guys get hurt with 0 fat (?) so keep it low)) As their stats start reaching their max, work the RT's to findangle things around to keep CP waste at a minimum. You have to know their personal maxes, they double with I.T. up to 99/255 top end. I will put them in later if I remember to. (Nah, I decided not to, just buy the book) Effective use of CP is the key, unless you cheat with inf CP, you won't grow much and fat out and spend most of your time in I.C.U. (Instead of that, just use Codebreaker to set all stats to FF, thats 255. It shows 55, but you can tell) ((I have resolved to quit cheating (amap) and play it as it was intended to be played. Spending 30 minutes in training for every 5 minute game)) (Wow, it seems like so much more in writing. Oh well) After I get Y.R.P.'n'S.N.B. to all of the I.T.'s, (not necessary, but it looks good) I send my FW's and MF's to the BWW and KSW. (I don't send Nida or Balkei to special shot schools. I leave them as the outside DF on my B - team. They can pop an OHV off a fumble and win you a game you want to lose. It really sucks when that happens) I train all of their teamwork with each other later, but start with LHS/LHS and RHS/RHS, (I know, but if I don't say it ..........) They tend to do more passing, but with that a lot more OHV's and RV's. But even before that, somewhere around 150 "V's" (give or take a few dozen, or so) when my team is all that and some massive Bling-Bling. (I hope that means what I think it means) (They are not maxed out yet, but getting up there) I take Nuvy Ronso in trade for Zev Ronso. (Back to the sleazy "L's") I like to keep the Ronso's team pure for the sake of Elder Kimarhi's (Elder Kimahri deserves nothing but respect, say Elder Kimahri, OK?) pride. I scrimmage her ((Nuvy, in case that last (...) confused you)) to max cat - 31 + whatever else goes up, as a bonus. 0 her fat and trade her back for Zamzi Ronso. I give him a steroid boost (for fun) and trade back for Zev Ronso and hold him till his contract expires or send him to a school for his faithful service. (They stay where you trade them, but return to their original positions if you fire them or fail to renew their cnt) Now that Ronso has a decent GL, (out of pure pity) I pull all Kilika, starting front to rear, in exchange for Miyu/Tatts - FW & MF, Cahan/Fobbi - DF, Barthello for Nizarut (GL) and scrimmage them to max and send the FW and MF's to BWW and/or KSW for the special moves. (If you start with Nizarut you will see so many 30 minute restarts it will make you puke, so if you do this, do the shooters first) I absolutely love watching my Beasts slap the Psyches silly. I don't fool with Guado, I can't forgive them for the Seymour Scandal. (This is the reference to whatever I said I would explain later. If you don't understand, don't worry about it) I leave Al Bhed alone, penance for taking their players and giving them Buddy & Bother. (Hey, I really had no choice) If I do anything to Luca, I take their players, starting with Bickson, in trade for Bother, then immediately fire them. I feel it teaches them a little humility. (Well, for spite really)

There it is BF, I only wish I could send them to advanced I.T. to max everything out at 99/255, (want in one hand & poo in the other, just to see which fills up first) but my GW never lose anyway. (Unless I throw a game for the prize ;-))

R.T. Guide:

1.1)Downtime - 1-2 pt fat reduction per CP. (I always use 1/2 - fat = 5, I use 2 CP)
1.2)I.C. - use to reduce out time after player has been hurt. (maybe) (9 CP = 90%) (I think)
2 )Ironman - ^ end, v blk.
3 )Sandbagging - ^ atk, v cat.
4 )Passing - ^ pas, v end.
5 )Shooting - ^ sht, v rec.
6 )Blocking - ^ blk, v rng.
7 )Goal keeping - ^ cat, v pas.
8 )Receiving - ^ rec, v sht.
9 )Throwing arm - ^ rng, v atk.
10)Pep talk - ^ mor. (maybe) (9 CP = 90%) (I think)
11)Counseling - ^ opt pts (maybe) (9CP = 90%) (I think)
12)Teamwork - ^ teamwork (What else could it be?)
(^ = raise, v = lower)

I hate this part. It is so stupid to raise one stat and lower another, but I didn't program it, so don't curse at me. First things first: -> sht <-> rec <-> sht <-. WTF!!! How can you shoot if you can't catch a pass? (Use these mainly to offset maxed stats with their lower counterparts. If rec max is 125 and you're there, and sht max is 53 and you have a ways to go, lower rec down some so when you scrm less CP go to waste) (Makes sense to me)

Rec and sht only affect each other, the others loop. No particular order: -> pas <-> end <-> blk <-> rng <-> atk <-> cat <-> pas <- on and on and on, just like the Energizer Bunny. Use mostly for balance.

Just because:

  + | -/+ | -
pas | end | blk
rng | atk | cat
cat | pas | end
rec | sht | rec
end | blk | rng
atk | cat | pas
blk | rng | atk
sht | rec | sht
(Seems silly, but it cuts training time down a little)

A.T. Guide:

13)Scrimmage - randomly raises any/all stats. (more details in next section)
14)Hot Bubble Bath - 2-4 fat reduction per CP. (I think, but not sure) (Calgon take me away)
15/16/17)FW, MF & DF. ^ some, v others. Why waste the time? (btw: no particular order)
(??? haven't spent much time with the last 4, so I don't much about them???)

Scrm Guide:

Ok, I know people tend to think scrimmaging sends players to I.C.U. entirely to fast. This is for these people who set 9 CP and jam through it as fast as they can until your players drop from exhaustion. Stop using it, NOW!!!!!!!!!! If used in moderation, with the opt pts as your guide, scrimmage max's your stats so fast, your head will spin. (My head spins all the time. I am taking someone else's word) Ok, so it takes a while, but by 50 wins, I have Y.R.P.&S.N.B maxed out and am waiting for their I.T's. To keep from wasting excess CP, I boost free agents, (Lucil & Dona are my personal favorites) or start working teamwork between Biggs and Wedge up, just for fun. That's that.

OPT PT. GUIDE: (especially for us dummies)

Pre-guess - Optimal points (sigh) are the game programmers way of screwing with our heads. They did it just to daze and confuse us into spending 500 + hours trying (& crying) to figure it out. I have had theory after theory and "all of them" had holes the size of the Grand Canyon, or larger. Now, I am not entirely sure, but this one seems to work for me.

Let me stress, I THINK, OK!!! (A whole lotta maybes here)

Wrong!!!

Guess - Hmmm, where to start? - It seems like, for what it's worth, that opt pts are a guide to how many CP you can safely use (w/o fat) to ^/v stats. It goes as follows: 1 CP = 0.1 pts on all stats but R&R, they are 1 CP for 1 pt. (I think) That is why you work it and work it without seeing immediate results, again except with R&R. Opt points change up or down (randomly) as you use or don't use them. (I think) Use council to raise opt pts to max. (randomly) (maybe) Seems to me the CP # is a %, i.e: 9 CP = 90%, so it is better to use 9 - 2x than 8 - 3x. (Makes sense to me) Opt points have everything to do with the ^/v of the stats. The CP you set, changes your stats in a completely uncomprehendible, absolutely ludicrous and every other adjectivally (?) phrase/slogan you want to use. (Or something like that) If your opt pt for atk is 5 and the opt pt for cat is 5, and you use 9 CP to sandbag you will get + 0.5 atk, - 0.5 cat and + 4 fat, simple enough. If your opt pt for atk is 9 and the opt pt for cat is 2, and you use 9 CP to sandbag you will get + 0.9 atk, - 0.2 cat and fat will not rise. (??? the opt pt for atk is @ 9, so you can safely use 9, I think ???) R&R would be a 1 for 1 swap. Opt pt for sht is 3 and opt pt for rec is 9, you put 9 CP into shooting you get + 0.3 sht, - 9.0 rec and + 6 fat. The lowest opt pt of the pair (this time being sht) is the result you end up with, or something like that.. (you get what you give)

Post-guess - This is how I figure it, if you know something I don't know, please share the wealth.

I.T. Guide:

Basically, I.T. doubles the stat that is indicated behind the words "Intensive Training - ???" If sht max is 25, I.T.-sht makes the max 50. The word sht turns yellow (I think) after you get the training. As far as I know, you can't double up and turn that sht max of 50 into a max of 99 by going thought it again. All stats max at 99 except R&R, which max at 255.

Special shots:

Kilika Stairway Workout teaches Corkscrew Shot, and the Besaid Waterfall Workout teaches Overhead Volley. Regular Volley can happen anytime. (Both volleys require teamwork to be up a ways) (I have the cheat codes for codebreaker to give instant I.T. and special shots, they are the same as sending the players to the school) (but I am trying not to cheat)

Games people play: (you can take it or leave it)

1)Exhibition - 1 game, w/l or tie. (You choose your opponent)
2)Tournament - 3 sets of 2 games, 6 games total, w/l. (Prize for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place)
3)League - 10 sets of 3 games, 30 games total, w/l or tie. (Long drawn out process)

Honorable Mentions: (imo)

Rapid Growth - all opt pts max at or above 5.

1) Rikku - Rikku time - need I say more.
2) Miyu - Lv 4 - FW. (?) bonus - OHV & CS
3) Lucil (L) - Lv 5 - Lady luck, lucky seven's, all opt pts max at 7. bonus - OHV & CS
4) Dona (D) - Lv 5 - Lady Summoner, magically babelicious, DF or GL.
5/6) Maroda & Isaaru - not really good anywhere though.
-999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999.999) bother - but he's still scum.
(Just in case you haven't noticed, I don't care much for "Brother," so I call him Bother)

Alt. Players: w/ schools

1) Hildy - Lv 1 - FW, MF or GL. ((I use her on my B - team)(CL))
2) Naida - Lv 2 - FW or MF.
3) Mep - Lv 2 - FW, MF or DF. bonus OHV
4) Zalitz - Lv 2 - DF.
5) Durren - Lv 2 - MF or DF.
6) Shaami - Lv 3 - FW. bonus CS
7) Mifurey - Lv 3 - GL, but low pas & rng. (?) bonus (for what it's worth) - OHV
8) Zev Ronso - Lv 3 - DF or GL.
9) Neffe - Lv 3 - FW or MF.
10) Cahan - Lv 4 - MF or DF.
11) Tatts - Lv 4 - FW, MF or DF. bonus OHV
12) Rin - Lv 4 - FW or MF.
13) Forbe - Lv 4 - DF or GL.

Alt. players: w/o schools

1) Barthello - Lv 5 - FW (?) or GL (?) but very low pas. bonus CS
2) Yuyui - Lv 5 - Max everything, but you will see Hailey's Comet (again for some of us) before you get her there. (1 opt pt on all stats)
(I don't include other teams due to the trades required to train them)

I hope this, at very least amused someone. It took almost as long to organize as it did to familiarize myself with the in's & out's of the opt pt system. Yes, I am a slow study.

Adios Amigos, (Did I shpll that right?)
