Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends Complete Guide to Wei Yan Version: 1 by IzoDaHuio ([email protected]) Recent Version History: Version 1: First version, first time creating the guide. Version 1.2: No major updates in this version. Just added the introduction and "Coming soon." notices for Legend Mode and Wei Yan's fourth weapon in Legend Mode. These will be completed for Version 2. -----| 1.) Introduction -----| Hello, I am Izo Huio, and those who know me on the boards, will know that I am a massive Shu fan. As such, I have decided to do a complete guide to Wei Yan. So, fair enough. Why should you trust anything I say? Because... I've played DW3, DW3:XL, DW4, DW4:XL, DW4:Empires, DW5, and now this... DW5:XL OK, so I'm a big fan of a series and I've played them all, so what? Wei Yan has been the only character I have sticked with all the way through playing the game as my all time favourite. He ROCKS. Although, saying that, this is my first guide and I ain't expecting utter perfection. And neither should you. I doubt even Muni Shinobu (DW4 Guide God in my eyes), thought he was going to make the perfect guide. -----| 2.) Contents -----| To find any section, press Ctrl+F and search the section number. As so: #.) 1.) Introduction 2.) Contents 3.) Who is Wei Yan? 4.) Why play as Wei Yan? 5.) How do I unlock Wei Yan? 6.) Who moves does Wei Yan have? 7.) Wei Yan's Musou Mode. 8.) Wei Yan's Weapons 9.) Wei Yan's Legend Mode Battles 10.) Credits 11.) FAQ's 12.) Contact details. -----| 3.) Who is Wei Yan? -----| The game describes Wei Yan as: "A man filled with a love for battle and war. Wei Yan would join Liu Bei, entranced by his charisma. He would faithfully serve Shu at Jie Ting and at Wu Zhang Plains. However, after both Liu Beis and Zhuge Liangs death, he would have no reason to stay with Shu. Predicting that this would be the case, Zhuge Liang warned Shu that Wei Yan might revolt. Wei Yan would be killed by Ma Dai." Pretty much, yeah. Wei Yan was not to be trusted by Zhuge Liang, which will become clear when playing Wei Yan's Musou Mode. The game also makes him out to be a quiet, angry man obsessed with battle. Read his profile at Kongming. You'll see this isn't quite the case. However, the game is pretty much correct. He was killed in a ploy by Zhuge Liang. I was extremely impressed with Zhuge Liang for this. I feel I should explain it. (Unless you wanna go to Kongming and read it for yourself) Zhuge Liang left instructions before he died for Ma Dai to join Wei Yan if he revolted, in a letter read by Yang Yi, he provoked Wei Yan to shout "Who dares kill me?!", this was the cue for the ploy, behind Wei Yan, Ma Dai shouted "I dare!" and slayed Wei Yan. Just brilliance. However, Liu Chan issued an edict saying that Wei Yan would be buried honorably, in consideration of his former services. Ma Dai, was given Wei Yan's rank. -----| 4.) Why play as Wei Yan? -----| Why the heck not?! Erm, sorry. But yes, Wei Yan is, although, not really a beginniners character, he is not hard to master, and once you learn how to use SST(T) and SSSSST(T) effectively, Wei Yan will be a force to be feared across the three kingdoms. He is very effective against crowds and officers, being extremely fast and powerful with his Vougue, and please, learn how to use his Musou well, that can be powerful in the hands of an expert. -----| 5.) How do I unlock Wei Yan? -----| If you're playing on DW5, you must play as Huang Zhong to unlock him. If you have DW5:XL, he will be unlocked initially. -----| 6.) What moves does Wei Yan have? -----| There are certain letters associated with move sets, which all members of the DW Community have agreed upon. S = Square Button, T = Triangle Button, C = Circle Button, (T) = Repeated Triangle. Blah, makes sense. Haha. S: A downward attack to the left. SS: A upward attack to the right. SSS: A spinning downward slash to the lower right. SSSS: A upward attack to the right. SSSSS: A upward attack to the left. SSSSSS: Spins his vougle in front of him *Evo SSSSSS: A downward attack to the right. *Evo SSSSSSS: An upwards slash to the right. *Evo SSSSSSSS: A spinning downward slash to the lower right. *Evo SSSSSSSSS: A sideways attack from the left to right. -- OK, I'll admit, I stole the S strings from Lanky522's DW5 Guide. Full credit to him. T: He dashes forward, in the form of two flips. ST: He hits into the air with an upward strike. SS(T):Spins around on his back with his weapon out followed with a crouching slash that stuns SSST: A horizontal slash that sends enemies flying. SSSST: Sends forward a whirlwind, which sends enemies flying up into the air. SSSSS(T): Trirls his weapon around in front of him, ending with a spinning slash. Run: Double spinning alash. Jump Charge: Spins in mid air upside down, like his SS(T), but upside down in the air. Musou: Slashes during spinning on the ground, getting up and sitting back down, finishing with a horizontal slash that can send enemies flying. True Musou: Same as Musou, but finishes spinning on his head creating a giant player based whirlwind. -----| 7.) Wei Yan's Musou Mode -----| Like many other officers, Wei Yan has 5 stages for his Musou Mode. All of them, against Wei. Therefore, I will list the battle commanders for each battle (Wheee! Isn't that fun!) The Battle of Mt. Ding Jun, The Battle of Tian Shui, The Battle of Jie Ting, The Battle of Chen Cang, and the Battle of Wu Zhang Plains. 5 of some of the best battles in the game if you ask me. --1-) Battle of Mt. Ding Jun. Liu Bei vs Cao Cao. You start off in the south-east near a Attack Base. So go and annoy your strategist (That damned Zhuge Liang!) and go and attack it. Zhuge Liang scolds you and tells you WILL obey, and help take Mt. Tian Dang. Blah! No one tells Wei Yan what to do! KILL HIM! Er, shame is, you can't. Dang. However, you are going to ignore him, for now. Continue upwards towards the attack base, take out the enemy checkpoint near and the base north of the attack base. Now, time to show Zhuge Liang your OWN Tactical Genius! He wants to attack Mt. Tian Dang on 3 sides. Advance from the north and change the 3 sides to 4. Take out Zhang He on the way, then anniliate Xiahou De's forces. Huang Zhong will now greet Xiahou Yuan with an arrow, which Yuan will nicely reply with another arrow. In my day, you replied to a greeting with a handshake! Now, Part 2 of 3. Anniliate Xiahou Yuan for his isolence! Cao Cao will soon show up and moan about Xiahou Yuan's death. He'll bring friends so kill them and clean up any remaining checkpoints before going through to Part 3, killing Cao Cao himself. Mop him up and you'll have won the first battle of Wei Yan's Musou Mode (And got one over on Zhuge Liang, and he doesn't thank you for IMPROVING his strategy, the cheek!) --2-) Battle of Tian Shui. Zhuge Liang vs Ma Zun. In this battle, it is beneficial to listen to Zhuge Liang. And even if you don't. Zhuge Liang won't shout at you. (Good job.) But, we're going to go along with him. He will order the attack on An Ding and Nan An, so advance forward and take An Ding, (Guarded by Cui Liang) and then advance to Nan An, (Guarded by Xiahou Mao), then Zhuge Liang will release Cui Liang (since he was captured first), but with the information that Jiang Wei has surrendered and defected to Shu. Go round killing Generals until Jiang Wei says that he's advanced too far. Go and defeat him. A cutscene will happen where Wei Yan wants to kill Jiang Wei, but is stopped by Zhuge Liang, Ma Zun will soon start to run away. Hunt him down to defeat him. The message "An Ding, Nan An and Tian Shui Castle have been caputured" or something along them lines will show up. And you win. --3-) Battle of Jie Ting. Ma Su (Zhuge Liang) vs Cao Pi. First couple of times playing this stage, I followed what Jiang Wei told me to do. And it was kinda a hard battle. So try it this way. SLAM SIMA YI! Just head for him first. He WILL isolate Ma Su, but then he Cao Pi will turn up and say "You where too confident, Sima Yi...", and then order the Wei Armies retreat from the summit, saving Ma Su with minimal effort. Now, it simply is just a matter of clearing up the Wei Forces. No one is particually hard and neither is Cao Pi, infact, he's quite weak. Slay Cao Pi and then the battle is yours. --4-) Battle of Chen Cang Castle. Zhuge Liang vs Sima Yi. At the start of this battle, Zhuge Liang will give the command of the siege to Jiang Wei, so will send forward Siege Ramps and Rams. They are going to fall. They will be destroyed by the enemy castle defenses. You're job, however, is to advance up the East Road, I do this no matter which Shu Officer I am anyways, you may choose to fight the ambushes or not, they consist of Fire Archers with improved health and defense. Enter the castle and anniliate Zhang He and the checkpoint to the north and right of the castle. Now head for Cao Ren and defeat him. Now go to the castle walls and defeat the three defense captains there. This will stop the castle's defenses and allow your Siege Ramps to do their job. By this time, Zhuge Liang has taken over controll of the siege with siege towers and catapults. Show him you don't need his pitiful weapons! Now, enter the castle via the gate you just opened by defeating Cao Ren, head for Hao Zhao and destroy him. This will not open the gate, but rather will prevent Hao Zhao's Fire Archer Ambush. Head down to the castle gate and defeat the defense captain there. The door will now open and the Shu Forces will rush the castle. Now make your way for Sima Yi, when you get there, a cut scene will happen where Sima Yi asks Wei Yan to defect. Where Wei Yan simply says no, as Zhuge Liang may not trust him, but Liu Bei did. Defeat Sima Yi and the battle is over. Shu Forces Victorious. --5-) Battle of Wu Zhang Plains. Zhuge Liang (Jiang Wei) vs Sima Yi. I hate this battle. It's a GOOD battle, but it's long and annoying. The time has come for the final battle with Wei, time to destroy them once and for all. Zhuge Liang will tell you not only is this the final battle with Wei, but it is HIS final battle, as he's going to die. (If you read the novel, you'll know this is Wei Yan's fault xD. Yay!) Shame. Anyway, he'll tell you to take out the two enemy bases which are flashing, so go ahead and do so. This will allow Yue Ying's Wood Ox to start delivering supplies. Now, simply go and destroy the enemy in the bases and infront of em, as soon as Deng Ai turns up, SLAM HIM. Into. The. Floor. The catapults will be your reward if you don't do this fast. Next, head for Zhong Hui who should have turned up and be decimating your forces along the East Road. After teaching him a lesson, head back to kill Cao Ren (if you didn't before), and Xu Zhu (again, if you didn't before) Head for Xiahou Ba and end him and his pitiful rock fall, then head round and end Zhen Ji and Sima Zhao (and his ambush troops), if you've cleared all three bases infront of the castle and the two inside, Zhuge Liang should be dead by now, then head for Sima Yi, who should be surrounded by your forces. End him and that's Wei Yan's musou mode complete. -----| 8.) Wei Yan's Weapons -----| Wei Yan, as with all characters, starts off with a default weapon, and has three weapons that can be found in the normal game, and one which must be found using special methods. --1-) Double Voulge Base Attack: 4 Number of attacks: 4 Weight: Random Attributes: Random --2-) Strike Voulge Base Attack: 8 Number of attacks: 5 Weight: Random Attributes: Random --3-) Double Star Base Attack: 12 Number of attacks: 6 Weight: Random Attributes: Random --4-) Comet Strike Base Attack: 36 Number of attacks: 6 Weight: Medium Attributes: Fixed - Charge Attack: Level 16 - Luck: Level 15 - Defense: Level 16 - Attack: Level 18 - Musou: Level 15 To obtain Comet Strike, there are certain requirements you gotta do. Stage: Battle of Chen Cang Castle, Shu Forces (Hard Difficulty) Requirements: Defeat all 4 Defense Captains. Strategy: Follow what I said for doing his level in Musou Mode, and that's what you need to do. Go along the western path into the castle, defeat Cao Ren, then the three defense captains on the wall, then defeat Hao Zhao, and the defense captain at the gate. The weapon will appear, pick it up and then complete the stage as normal. As well as obtaining it that way, you can aquire his fourth weapon in Legend Mode Stage: Battle of Jia Meng Gate (Hard Difficulty) Strategy: Coming soon. -----| 9.) Wei Yan's Legend Mode Battles. -----| There are certain battles in Legend Mode that Wei Yan has the chance to take part in. Each of the Legend Mode Stages are played sightly different with each officer. And this section will deal with Wei Yan's Stage Strategies. As this is, a Wei Yan Guide. It only deals with the stages where Wei Yan is a Recommended Playable General, not any of the others. -- Battle of Jia Meng Gate. Coming soon. -- Battle of Mt. Qi. Coming soon. That's it for Wei Yan. He only has two Legend Stages. You can of course, use him in all the stages, if you have already completed it once with that stage's recommended general. -----| 10.) FAQ's -----| What does SSST and others mean? - S stands for Square, while T stands for Triangle, SSST means to press square three times (or attack three times), then press triangle... this will excute the move listed. If more is needed, please ask on the boards. I don't have Musou Mode on my game, how do I get it?! - Xtreme Legends does not come with Musou Mode, to get it, you must press "Lord Original" and put in Dynasty Warriors 5. This will get you Musou Mode. Without Dynasty Warriors 5, you cannot get Musou Mode. XL is an expansion pack, in essense. -----| 12.) Contact details. -----| Any questions, suggestions or advice?
