III. About Dong Zhuo
Dong Zhuo's style name is Zhongying. The character database in Dynasty Warriors
3 provides the following information about him:

"He served as the governor of Xi Liang, but at the call of He Jin, decided to
come to the capital Luo Yang. Taking advantage of the chaos, he moved to the
Imperial Palace, with the pretext of caring for the child Emperor in order to
take over the government for himself. Adopting the mighty Lu Bu, he seized the
throne from the young Emperor, moving the capital to the city of Chang An. His
reign of tyranny came to an end by the hand of Lu Bu, his own adopted son."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV. Using Dong Zhuo
A. Dong's attacks
1. Regular attacks
S - A left-to-right upward slash.
SS - A right-to-left downward slash.
SSS - A left-to-right slash.
SSSS - A right-to-left upward slash.
SSSSS - A left-to-right slash.
SSSSSS - A straight thrust.

2. Charge attacks
T - Quick crouching slash. Breaks the enemy's guard.
ST - Jumping slash. Knocks the enemy into the air.
SST - Left-to-right slash. Stuns the enemy.
SSST - Sword thrust that sends the enemy flying. Gains a death element with
           5th weapon.
SSSST(T) - Upward slash that knocks the enemy high into the air for a follow-up
slash. Gains a lightning element with 4th weapon.
SSSSST - Shoots a tall energy wave straight ahead.

3. Mounted attacks
S/T : A series of left and right slashes. Yawn.
Musou : A series of quick, powerful left and right slashes. Nothing special.

4. Other attacks
Dash attack - A running slash that hits 180 degrees.
Jump attack - Downward slash. Not all that useful.
Musou - A series of powerful horizontal slashes that ends with a back
flop. The resulting shockwave damages surrounding enemies and
sends them flying. Quite amusing to watch.
True musou - Basically the same as the regular musou, but easier to juggle
with. Adds a fire element and two vertical slashes before the
              back flop.

B. Dong's 4th weapon
Grand Star (Base Attack +41, HP +70, Defense +45, Reach +25, lightning element
on SSSSTT)
Where to Get It: Hu Lao Gate, Dong Zhuo's side (Surprise!)
How to Get It: All allied generals except Lu Bu and Diao Chan must be defeated.
Diao Chan will defect. Defeat her to receive the precious item report.
Where It Is: In a crate by the gate directly to the west of Xu Rong's starting
position.
How I Did It: From the start, I headed east, took out Yuan Shu, and closed his
gates. Diao Chan started moving to the front lines, so I babysat her as I
waited for Liu Bei's forces and Gongsun Zan to defeat Xu Rong. While Cao Cao
and Sun Jian were scattering Hua Xiong's troops, I took out Liu Bei's forces
and a couple of stray generals under Sun Jian. At this point, Cao Cao and Sun
Jian had begun to wipe out Zhang Ji's forces, so I decided not to advance
further west and followed Diao Chan around some more. Around the 20:00 mark,
Zhang Ji was defeated and Diao Chan defected. I beat her into submission,
grabbed the weapon when it appeared, and finished off the remaining enemy
generals and Yuan Shao. Using a fresh Dong Zhuo with a Peacock Urn +54, a
Dragon Amulet +59, a Tiger Amulet +20, a Tortoise Amulet +40, a Wind Scroll
+18, and a Long Sword with a +20 attack bonus, I was able to claim the weapon
and win the battle in a little over 40 minutes.

If you decide to use a different strategy, be sure to leave the enemy generals
alive until they finish off all the nearby allied generals. If you kill the
enemy generals too early, your army may gain the upper hand; if you kill them
too late, you may be overwhelmed by enemies with high morale and have some
difficulty surviving the battle. Think before you slaughter.

C. Dong's 5th weapon (Xtreme Legends only)
Black Steel (Base Attack +41, Musou +74, Defense +45, Mounted Defense +53,
Reach +29, Arrows +30, death element on SSST)
Where to Get It: Wu Zhang Plains, Dong Zhuo's side
How to Get It: With Fan Chou alive, defeat Pang Tong before the catapults start
firing. If Fan Chou is still alive at the 7:30 mark, you'll get the precious
item report when your reinforcements arrive.
Where It Is: In a crate at the southeast corner of the south central fort.
How I Did It: In preparation for this task, I maxed out Dong Zhuo's attack and
defense and obtained his 4th weapon. My items of choice were a Dragon Amulet
+59, a Tiger Amulet +20, a Tortoise Amulet +40, an Elixir +19, and the Hex Mark
Saddle. I made a beeline for Pang Tong as soon as the battle began, riding
past Zhang Yi and Wei Yan to reach him. Once he was dead, I ran to the south
central plateau to protect Fan Chou, who was simulataneously fighting Ma Chao,
Zhang Fei, Ma Dai, and Jiang Wei. I defeated Ma Dai and helped Fan Chou hold
off the others until the reinforcements arrived. After eliminating Zhang Fei,
I headed into the fort and claimed my weapon. By the time I had it, all of my
fellow generals except my subordinate had been defeated, and Wei Yan and Zhao
Yun had reached the plateau. I eventually cut down everyone on the plateau ex-
cept for Jiang Wei, who pursued me as I fell back to the fort. Luckily, I was
able to slip past him; he held his position in front of the fort for the rest
of the battle. I fled from the plateau and worked my way counterclockwise
around the map, closing gates and killing the officers under Liu Bei and Zhuge
Liang as I approached their plateau. I slowly hacked my way through the hordes
of troops and dispatched both the ruler of Shu and his strategist. My total
time was a little under one grueling hour.

Obtaining this weapon is a long and difficult procedure, and being hasty about
it will greatly shorten your life expectancy. Defeating Pang Tong is the most
critical part of the process; Fan Chou has a reasonable amount of lasting power
and shouldn't be too hard to keep alive. Securing the weapon is also simple,
but fighting your way off the plateau is the longest and hardest part of the
battle. Unless you brought along a friend, it'll be you versus the entire Shu
army. Those are especially bad odds on Very Hard, but victory is still a
possibility. Your top priority should be killing archers, who can easily turn
you into a human pincushion. Once the air is free of arrows, move on to the
generals. Try to lure one or two of them after you at a time, and take your
time defeating them. If you have Dong's 4th weapon - and I strongly encourage
you to obtain it before you even attempt to get his 5th weapon - use and abuse
your SSSSTT combo to clear out peons quickly. If you get overwhelmed, fall back
to look for health or charge your musou gauge. Most importantly, SAVE AND LOAD
OFTEN! It's far less frustrating to regain 5 minutes' worth of progress than it
is to start a battle all over again. Play conservatively, and eventually you'll
walk off the battlefield with a new weapon at your side.

D. Dong's Musou Mode (Xtreme Legends only)
1. The Battle at Hu Lao Gate
Looks much different than it did on the allies' side, doesn't it? Start by
heading east to meet Sun Jian's forces. Cheng Pu's waiting by the southeast
gates; if you don't want to fight him, just kill Han Dang and Sun Jian as they
approach. Head east, close the gates, and make your way north to take out Liu
Bei, his brothers, and Gongsun Zan's forces. Help Lu Bu with Yuan Shu, and then
head to the top of Fan Shui Gate to take out Cao Cao and his officers. Close
the two gates on the far west side of the battlefield, and then follow the
northernmost path to reach Yuan Shao. Yan Liang will appear to protect his com-
mander, but you should make short work of him. Yuan Shao won't be much worse.

2. The Battle at Guan Du
Leave your little fort and take out Yue Jin and Xu Zhu. Head west across the
bridge to fight Xiahou Dun and his officers. At the 3:00 mark, Xu Huang and
several archer towers will appear to the west of your starting position; the
rain of arrows will stop once Xu Huang dies. Once he's out of the picture, head
north for Cao Hong and Cao Ren, closing the gates on your way. Zhang He and a
few peons should be the only things standing between you and Cao Cao now. Wipe
them all out and finish the battle.

3. Raid on the Rogue Fortress
You start by the south entrance, but don't bother trying to enter through it.
Go through the west gate and defeat the three Lt. Commanders on the outer sec-
tion of the fortress before heading deeper inside. After killing the last Lt.
Commander, take some time to explore the fortress, especially the central room.
Soon, Dian Wei will appear outside and flee to the southeast corner of the bat-
tlefield. Approach him, and Xu Zhu will show up to reinforce him. Reward their
dedication to the former kingdom of Wei with several inches of cold steel.

4. The Battle at He Fei
If you thought you'd wiped out Wu at Hu Lao Gate, think again. Sun Ce's in
charge now, and he's convinced that his meager forces stand a chance against
your massive army. Prove him wrong by going straight for the center and taking
out Cheng Pu, then working your way south for Ling Tong. Cut through the center
and head northeast, taking care of Lu Meng and Xu Sheng on your way. 4:00 into
the mission, Taishi Ci will spring an ambush near your camp, but you should be
able to head west and promptly crush his resistance if you've followed the bat-
tle plan thus far. Only Sun Ce and his subordinates will be left now, so make
your way towards the southeast corner. Gan Ning and Zhou Tai will appear to
reclaim the center, but you should be able to kill them and take back what's
rightfully yours. (Don't worry; Gan Ning's nowhere near as strong as he is in
Wei's version of this battle.) Lu Xun will arrive as you approach the south
bridge. He'll appear on the north side of the river, but his subordinate ap-
pears to the south side, so you'll have to avoid the little elf and backtrack
if you want to defeat them both. With Lu Xun gone, cut your way through Sun
Ce's underlings and put the Little Conqueror in his place.

5. The Battle at Tong Gate
Now things start to get a bit more difficult. Archers are more threatening than
ever in this battle, and Lu Bu's absence doesn't make things any easier. Start
by heading west and slaying Hou Xuan. Zhang Fei will show up on the western
edge of the battlefield after 30 seconds, but don't go after him yet. Go for Ma
Dai and Pang De instead. Once they're both dead, Fan Chou will mobilize his
forces. Work your way counterclockwise around the battlefield to his position,
cutting down all who stand in your way. Ma Chao, Han Sui, and Yang Qiu should
be the only enemy generals left when you reach the bridge behind the Tong Gate.
Hunt them down and kill them, but beware the archers.

6. The Battle at Wu Zhang Plains
This one's murder. The enemy generals are very aggressive and will pursue you
relentlessly, so be prepared to fight hard if you get cornered. Go north from
the beginning to kill Pang Tong and prevent him from firing off his catapults.
Next, defeat Zhao Yun, who should be getting close to Gao Shun's plateau, and
fight off Wei Yan and his troops as you work your way to the south. Cut across
the south central plateau, killing Jiang Wei, Ma Dai, and Zhang Bao as you
progress. Ma Chao and Zhang Fei will also show up as reinforcements, and Guan
Yu will arrive at the 7:30 mark if Fan Chou has been defeated. Cut them all
down if they threaten you. Once they're out of your way, only Zhuge Liang and
Liu Bei will remain. Head for the northwest plateau and kill them to put an end
to the kingdom of Shu.

7. The Battle at Chi Bi
It's time for the grand finale! Only your adopted son and his treacherous con-
cubine stand between you and complete domination of China. They also have Zhang
Liao on their side, which leaves you with nothing but faceless generals to help
you with this fight. Don't bother trying to keep them alive; just flee to the
east shore, defeat Gao Shun, and wait near his original position. The other
enemy generals will come for you as your allies fall. Fight defensively,
killing archers and any peons who come to melee with you before taking on the
enemy generals. 11:00 into the battle, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu will arrive on the
southern side of the map, and Dian Wei and Xiahou Dun will join them at the
12:00 mark. These four will wreck havoc as they work their way towards you,
but you should have enough time to kill Lu Bu and Diao Chan before they reach
you. If you're feeling gutsy, head south to do battle with them, but be quick
about it. Take too long, and you could end up fighting half a dozen playable
generals simulataneously! Once Lu Bu and Diao Chan fall, the battle - and all
of China - will be yours. Enjoy the ending!

E. Maximizing Dong Zhuo's effectiveness
At this point, you might be wondering why anyone would want to use Dong Zhuo in
Free Mode, let alone in Musou Mode. He runs slowly, he jumps like a crippled
elephant, and his bow defense leaves a bit to be desired. His SSST and the last
hit of his SSSSSS combo both hit in narrow areas, and he has the slowest musou
of any of the sword wielders. He was a real jerk in the novel, too.

Well, I'll agree that Dong Zhuo wasn't exactly a benevolent ruler in the novel,
but he's far from useless in the game. He has high attack power, reasonable
defense, and very good crowd control. His SST combo stuns enemies in a broad
area in front of him, and all the slashes of his SSSSS combo hit in a wide arc.
These combos alone should help you escape from crowds quickly and with minimal
damage. Dong's 4th and 5th weapons are worth the effort to obtain; they both
give large bonuses to reach and elemental attacks that improve his crowd
control abilities even more. His musou may be slow, but the back flop clears
crowds effectively and gives you a chance to catch your breath. Generals or
smart peons will sometimes recover from the slashes quickly enough to block the
shockwave, but you can prevent that by stunning them or knocking them into the
air first. As an alternative, you can equip The Way of Musou; anyone who gets
hit by the vertical slashes will stay in the air long enough to get hit by the
shockwave on the way down. When fighting other generals, use Dong's SSSSSS,
SSSST(T), and SSSSST combos to make short work of them.

I recommend using the following equipment:

Weapon: Black Steel
Items: Peacock Urn, Tiger Amulet, Tortoise Amulet, Shell Armor/Elixir/The Way
of Musou, Speed Scroll/Wind Scroll/Red Hare Saddle

V. Questions & Answers
Q: Why a Dong Zhuo FAQ?
A: It hadn't been done yet, and I think he's kind of fun (and funny) to use.

Q: Dong Zhuo's fat, stupid, and worthless.
A: That's not a question, though I can't really argue with the fat part. He's
certainly not worthless; none of the characters are. He just takes practice to
use well. Try playing him like you would Sun Jian; the two have fairly similar
styles.

Q: How do I unlock Dong Zhuo?
A: You must personally defeat Lu Bu, Diao Chan, and Dong Zhuo in The Battle at
Hu Lao Gate. I recommend playing on Normal and using a maxed-out character to
ensure that you'll be able to stand up to Lu Bu.

Q: I met the requirements to get Dong Zhuo's 4th weapon, but I didn't get the
precious item report!
A: Make sure the difficulty's set to Hard, and that either you or the second
player personally defeat Diao Chan.

Q: I met the requirements to get Dong Zhuo's 5th weapon, but I didn't get the
precious item report!
A: If you don't have Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends, you can't get 5th
weapons at all. If you do, look at the previous answer, but add a "Very" in
front of the word "Hard" and replace "Diao Chan" with "Pang Tong."

Q: Why can't I use Dong Zhuo in Musou Mode?
A: Probably because you don't have Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends. If
you're determined to conquer China with him, it's well worth a purchase.

Q: Is it just me, or does Dong Zhuo's American voice actor sound like the same
guy who voices Cyril in Star Ocean 2?
A: It's not just you.

Q: Your FAQ sucks! I've crapped out better FAQs than this!
A: As soon as you find a way to upload excrement, you should post your wondrous
creation for all to see.

Q: I posted my FAQ, and everyone I know thinks it's better than yours! Your FAQ
really DOES suck!
A: Congratulations! I am in awe of your superior FAQ-writing skills! Now go
away.

Q: This is the best FAQ I've ever read! You're a genius and a god among men,
and I want to know more about you so that I can immortalize you!
A: I hear that one a lot. My contact info's listed below.

Q: <insert some question that has nothing to do with Dong Zhuo or the FAQ here>
A: See the second sentence of my previous answer.
