On the level Emerald 3 how can you cover carrington when even if you throw grenades at them they don't even die??

I too had alot of trouble with this level but I just went through the last stages after the checkpoint, collecting health packs and went out and used all my guns.

But found the perfect 1 my shotgun and the AR grenades.
