In my abduction experiences in this game my Sims only ever came back from space sick and throwing up or simply just dropped back on to the front lawn with no symptoms to speak of.

Yeah Why would it do that? When it's happened to me I just get back to the front lawn and have these alien pet treats. They are really cool.
