Help I'm stuck on the bit wheree yo have to defeat the pirate boss(sorry don't know name)

Kill all the ather enimys + the canons and then go up the steps and have your eliment on ice go to about 2 steps down from him and continue to throw ice boms at him and then hit him untill he unfrezes and go back down the steps and get more eliment from the cristal then repeat the sikle untill he is beat.
How on earth do you beat the Ship dude in the tounament i got to the second bar but when i went to the second he sped up an i kept dying an there are no crystals to help me defeat him.... please help im playing right now am i have my stress ball with me :/
