You need to complete all the Team Stories and have all 7 Chaos Emeralds to enter the "Last" story.

I personally found Metal Madness quite easy.

On the Team Rose section, use Big to attack his weak spot.
On the Team Chaotix section, use Vector when his weak spot is yellow and Charmy when his weak spot is red.
On the Team Dark section, use Rouge when his weak spot is red, Omega when it's blue and Shadow when it's yellow. You may have to use the Team Blast with Shadow and Omega, just make sure that the formation you want is the leader of the team. No use using Rouge against a yellow weak spot!

Metal Overload is a lot more difficult. Make sure you have plenty of rings as Super Sonic kept turning back to normal Sonic and falling for me. The only move that'll affect (or effect) Metal Overlord is the Team Blast move. Charge it up by constantly using Sonic and trying to use the Rocket Accel move. Listen very carefully to the hints the other teams give you, this could really help you.

In total, it takes five Team Blasts to defeat Metal Overlord.
