You can't beat him, you have to get him to break the metal shield thing around the centre mast. To do this I just stayed next to the centre mast and attacked him he then will damage the shield by attacking it after making a weird nosie. After he breaks it get jack to set it on fire.

It's quite hard but I played as jack and threw them fire things at him, when I ran out I kept on running and attacking him and as he goes to attack you hold the block and press a direction (except for straight at him) and you will evade, don't care for will and repeat this until he dies. And ignore his men, if you do this right he shouldnt hit you.

Ok to do it you have to stay by the middle pole and start to wack him ( better with to player )and just keep on doing the till he is done

It is acully impossible to defeat don de la vega. But to do the part when he is attacking you what I did was just dodge until he made the dllllllllllllllllllll! Sound than ran to the main mast and blocked so he will hit your sword thats blocking him and the main mast.

I'm only posting this because it took me forever to beat him even after reading the answers. You can beat him unlike they say. You do it by first making sure he is near the mast then hitting him with xxx then he will make the weird sound then he will hit the mast with his thousand sword strike. Do this about five or six times and the plates will fall off and use jacks bombs to set it on fire. There is a barrel to fill the grog bombs if you run out. Oh and try not to get hit when he makes the weird sound because it takes alot of life out of you!
