Statue Offerings

Does anyone know what to use for offerings for the statues you find scatterd throughout the game? Do I have to buy them, do I dig them up? Help please. It's not too important that I find an answer, I've beat the game already but, I'd like to know. Also, is the Cutter's house always dark and gloomy or can I change that?

I call him Goliath. Smile
The no-name man there makes Vases. He claims to be a master potter. I'm not sure of what you have to do to have him make some, but once you do, come back every new Sun and talk to him. He'll give you a vase. Bite it and move close to a statue there. A flower will be planted in it and you will receive some Praise.
