How do I use stage shift for the last mission for c-rank

Sometimes when you get knocked to the ground a yellow box appears above you. At this point press (x) and up at the same time to do a stage shift. You have to intentionally get knocked down to do this.
I think if you press X and Down when falling, it appears much more often
