You can only get a sword (or other various weapons) in certain area in the game (for example, the Pulse Blade for one section in the Tekunin Warship). Also, once you defeat the enemies in that section, you lose the weapon.

However, when you fight in the one-on-one battles, you can draw your sword just like any other character by simply pressing L2.
