How is it that you are supposed to get past the second part of the Hoover Dam?

It seems like every time I try I die annoyingly less than halfway walking down the road to my destination...

I know i'm doing something wrong and i'm not good at figuring these things out so I'd appreciate it if I could be told an easier way to do this...
