The game can be played on it's own but to better understand the truth behind it all I suggest playing the previous 4 games. It stars with the character Haseo on his first day of the game. Sadly he gets pked. Eight months later he's level 133 and kicks pker's butts!
He is known as "the Terror of Death". But he is after the legendary pker Tri-edge, who looks suspiciously like Kite from the other games. Tri-edge data drains him and his computer reformats and he is back to level 1 with no items :(

No, think of it as an almost new story or a spin-off. They're 2 things that are a from the last games; 1 it's still in the rpg "the world". 2 Kite is there,but he is a bad guy.

It's 7 years after it there was a fire that destroyed the first world this version 2 kite, orca, and that guy with the wings thier all special npc that are in charge of getting AIDA and Haseo's nickname was first Skeath's.

I personally have never played the ".hack//infection games" but I watched an anima series called .hack//Roots. You know the beginning video has that whole story about Haseo (it's explained in a previouse answer to this question so I won't bother rehashing it)? Well .hack//Roots is the entire story with more length and depth but the end of the series drops off right after Haseo is PKed by Tri-Edge and was data-drained back to level 1. As far as I can tell, the game is a continuation of the story line from .hack//Roots.

The .hack g.u. Series is 7 years after the infection series and you do not need to finish the originals it is just a good idea so you can know what the game is talking about in some of the cut scenes but all the data does is give you little extras like an email from black rose that was meant for kite and other emails from people from the oh so many series
