I have just encountered the mimic queen (boss) and I have had trouble trying..

You get the blizzard spell in Rabanastre.Yeah the Mimic Queen is weak against ice but you can still beat her without it just make sure you have plenty of healing potions and just keep attacking.

Unfortunatly you cannot buy items on travel. Sometimes you will find merchants along your travels outside of towns. There was a merchant when you got out of the prison, but I'm not sure if he had Blizzard.

Ok now I will give you an effective strategy here although, it may be a little time consuming. Since you do not have blizzard, you may want to use other spells, it is important that you DO NOT use Thunder. The main thing you are going to want to focus on is healing with all of your controllable characters. Set up some healing gambits. Take a look at my Gambit Combinations FAQ, you will find the Basic and Advanced Healing sections useful for this battle. You will want all your characters to have a reving gambit in slot one and a healing gambit in slot 2. As a matter of fact, just use all your MP for healing or reviving. Let Basch do all of the damage to the Mimic Queen as he is the most effective against it anyway. Hope this Helps

I beat her without blizzard, it's not impossible.

Maybe a couple of health or strength augments may help.

Yes I took your advice and trekked back to the burrough at the beginning and sure enough he DID have blizzard so thanks for the help!

Note: helps if your characters are level 10+

You may or may not have already killed the mimic queen but just in case you havnt this is what I did:
Have gambits set:
For balthier
1. Ally:<70%-first aid
2. Attack party leaders target

Vaan
1. Ally<70%-cure
2. Attack party leaders target

Fran
1. Ally<70%-cure
2. Attack party leaders target

Have vaan as your party leader this way you can use his cure ability and do damage. Note:it is helpful if you have the mage masher dagger.

step 0.5:first of all if you have the mage masher, attack the mimic queen until she is silenced, this way she cannot cast thunder, this step is not neccesary.

step 1: take out all the small mimics! They may look harmless but they are huge damage dealers in packs

Step 2: once all the small mimics are dead, focus all atack to the mimic queen, use this chance to cast vaans blizzard if he has the license, if not use frans DO NOT USE ALL YOUR MP CASTING BLIZZARD you should leave at least half of it so you can heal after she does her huge ground shaker attack (may do this a few times)

Step 3: continue nuking the mimic queen, keeping health topped up, she will eventually spawn new mimics but they should be of no harm because the mimic queen should be on low health by now

Step 4: when you feel you have the advantage of the battle, feel free to use blizzard again to end the fight quickly but don't do this if you feel there might be a good chance of death

Thats what I did, none of my characters even died, sorry for the lengthy-ness of this, but trust me it's a good tactic. Hope I helped (without boring you to death by reading). BYE!.
