There is no Esper in the Sochen Cave Palace that I'm aware of. The only big-bad beastie in there is the Hell Wrym and I believe he has approximately 8 million in HP.
To get the key, you must have started the "Hunts" via the Phon Coast. You must undertake the Vyraal hunt with the Viera Wayfarer when it opens, and complete it in it's entirety. That means: you complete the hunt, return her things, and claim your reward. She will give you a scale that fell into her bag. You then must travel back to the area in which you hunted the Vyraal, and track down Windmill 10. At this point, if you have spoken with the Wrym Philosopher before, he should be here now. In the windmill. Give him the wrym scale the Viera gave you, and he will trade you the "age worn key."
