There's no question that the Dynasty Warrior games really elevated Koei, their creator and publisher, to another level of success. And Koei has done an excellent job of riding some would say exploiting that success, to the point that many gamers have grown cynical about the inevitability of yet another sequel which many will buy anyway. It might be time to ditch those negative assumptions, though, because Koei is doing something really special with Dynasty Warriors 5. More than just another little update, Dynasty Warriors 5 actually brings some meaningful changes and honest-to-god newness to this popular but stagnating action series. As always, the game invites you to take part in the historical wars of ancient China, as a member of one of the three kingdoms or an unaligned warrior. This time out there are 48 characters to choose from, and each has their very own storyline -- quite an improvement from the meager four storylines of the last game. Each character's campaign will be of only modest length, but Koei still estimates it'll take 70-80 hours to see and unlock everything. The most obvious addition must be the new graphics engine. Apparently all of the whining in reviews finally paid off, as Dynasty Warrior 5's retooled engine is a technical marvel. First, get this -- it runs at 60 frames per second, twice as fast as previous games. Second, it can display about twice as many characters at once. Third, the annoying fog is gone; you can see clear to the horizon. And fourth? There's not a bit of slowdown! Absolutely none, in my admittedly limited playtime. I'm honestly shocked that Koei was able to coax such miracles out of the aging PS2. The new engine looks and feels great. It also brings some changes to the gameplay. For example, since there are now almost twice as many enemies at once, the lowly foot soldiers have been made easier to dispatch. In previous games it was quite difficult to achieve body counts in the thousands, but in DW5 it won't be too uncommon. On the other hand, enemy officers have been beefed up, and will give you tougher fights. Speaking of officers, your officer corps has also been upgraded. Each one is more unique in its abilities, and they'll now be much more helpful and aggressive on the battlefield. One way they'll help is by performing team musou (super) attacks in concert with your character. These can really send the enemies flying, and it's all the more satisfying now that there are so many more of them. There's also a new power-up called the musou rage. You can trigger it after picking up a medal on the battlefield, and it makes your attacks super-fast. You can combine that ability with your musou attack for better results; if you're feeling really crazy, you can do a team musou rage musou attack (whew), -- nearby buildings will be lucky to be standing after one of these. Oh, I'm not kidding. Buildings can be knocked down, and now they'll actually collapse onto anyone who's unfortunate enough to be nearby. As in Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires, other buildings called strongholds litter the battlefields, and you can gain an edge over local enemies by taking these over. Of course, they can do the same, and the enhanced A.I. will do all it can if it senses a stronghold is in danger. In any case, this tenth game is a good one, so look forward to it in March.

I get the feeling you want a short answer instead of a long chinese explanation of the history of koei. Well, you can do musou mode with each individual person. Other than that and a few extra characters, there isn't much difference between it and the other games.
