If you look at the ground, you can see all the sticks, most of them are with a red bit on them, but there are a few with white on them instead. If you look you will notice that there is a gap between the two white sticks, like a gate. Walk trough it and then look forthe nxt set of white sticks, then walk to them and so on. Just follow the white sticks and it will guide you through the mine field.

Going from rock to rock is for mission Shore Patrol, where a land filled with mines is also in your way. For mission River Raid, you must indeed follow the path marked by the white sticks.
