General dancing tips

I'm no DDR expert, but considering the lack of tips on this site, I'll contribute some. These are for novices (people playing all their songs on Standard or lower) I started playing about two months ago and can clear some of the 9-foot songs by now (which is decent improvement, I'd say) - you can experience this type of improvement too. Some general tips:

- don't step in the center every beat. For that matter, don't "hop" every beat, unless you're trying to lose weight. It's an inefficient and tiring method of hitting that notes that will rarely see you past the easiest Standard difficulty songs. Instead, leave your foot on the pad each time you hit a note. Believe me, this will help you a lot. It won't feel weird for more than two or three songs.

- learn to recognize patterns of arrows. This is the most important - on some heavy and challenge songs (like AM-3P on heavy, or Kind Lady on challenge), you'll be faced with very long streams of quick steps - steps that are half a beat. They are overwhelming at first, but with practice they become easy. Off-beats are a different color to indicate their off-beatness, but people seem to mess them up, too. It helps to have a good sense of rhythm to get them (and knowing the songs usually helps)

- crossovers. Suppose you have a few quick steps going Left Down Right Down Left Down Right Down Left......and so forth. It is intuitive to step on the Left arrow with the left foot and the Right arrow with the right foot, am I right? Don't do it. There are some songs with crossovers (Tsugaru heavy, AM-3P heavy) that are simply too fast or tiring to take with that approach. Instead, use crossovers - hit the left and right arrows with your left foot and the down arrow with your right. You should basically rotate to the right and hit the arrows as if they were Down Right Up Right Down Right..... (you could also hit the left and right arrows with your right foot and the down arrow with your left, with a rotation to your left). They key is keeping one foot in place. Although the Left Down Right crossover is more common, learn to use the Left Up Right crossovers too. This allows you to play with less effort and more presicion than double-stepping each successive note.

- play songs that challenge you! It wasn't too long ago that Tsugaru Heavy, being a 9-footer, was completely out of reach for me - I failed it with room to spare. However, after some practicee the song has become a lot less daunting: I can get A's and B's on it without too much trouble. Don't just play the songs you're comfy with - explore a little! There are lots of songs and dances in the various DDR games - don't just confine yourself to a few!

Good luck dancing!

Two "Free" songs

To easy unlock two songs, go into game mode, select "Heavy" and pick one of the hardest songs. And when you fail, you should see the "NEW!!" thing flashing next to "Information". Check it, and you unlocked "Celebrate" By JJ Company.

Next, go into an Oni Course, and fail that. (To pick an Oni course, when you select your difficulty, go all the way to the right, passed heavy, and you should hear the announcer say, "This Mode Is Difficult!!".) Go into that, and pick one. Now fail it. You should see NEW!! again next to Inforamtion. Check it, and you unlocked Gentle Stress.

This is a really easy way to complete hard songs. Go to game mode and select any difficulty. Then pick a song (this works much better with fast songs)stand on the left arrow and the up arrow with one foot, and stand on the down arrow and the right arrow with the other foot.

Stay standing like that and when the song starts just bounce up and down until the song ends. It works really well if you do it right. This will get you past most songs. It sounds hard but it's very easy once you get the hang of it.
