Question for Mega Man X5

What the heck does the EX tank in the game do? Im prrrroooobibly going to need it. (Taking on Sigma as Zero. Allmost beat him though.)

I heard that it starts you with more lives after a game over, but I am not sure

instead of starting with 2 extra lives, you start with 4
