Just run around to avoid being hit by the falling rocks and green acid-spit. When the Basilisk rears up, and you can see the black diamond, lock on with the aiming button, and attack with the sword. When you lose the sword, you have to go find it again. You can't beat the Basilisk without it.

Just keep going left until he spits, then immediately go right whilst firing flipendo at him.
